Identification of onosma visianii roots extract and purified shikonin derivatives as potential acaricidal agents against tetranychus urticae
There is an increasing need for the discovery of reliable and eco-friendly pesticides and natural plant-derived products may play a crucial role as source of new active compounds. In this research, a lipophilic extract of Onosma visianii roots extract containing 12% of shikonin derivatives demonstrated significant toxicity and inhibition of oviposition against Tetranychus urticae mites. Extensive chromatographic separation allowed the isolation of 11 naphthoquinone derivatives that were identified by spectral techniques and were tested against Tetranychus urticae. All the isolated compounds presented effects against the considered mite and isobutylshikonin (1) and isovalerylshikonin (2) were the most active, being valuable model compounds for the study of new anti-mite agents
Ovicidal activity of Pithecellobium dulce (Family: Fabaceae) leaf and seed extracts against fi lariasis vector mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae)
Mosquito-borne diseases with an economic impact create a loss in commercial and labor outputs, particularly incountries with tropical and subtropical climates. Mosquito control is facing a threat because of the emergence ofresistance to synthetic insecticides. Insecticides of botanical origin may serve as suitable alternative biocontroltechniques in the future. In view of recently increased interest in developing plant origin insecticides as analternative to chemical insecticide, in the present study ovicidal efficacy of different solvent leaf and seed extractof Pithecellobium dulce against filariasis vector C. quinquefasciatus. The ovicidal efficacy of the crude leaf extractsof P. dulce with five different solvents, such as benzene, hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and chloroform, wastested against C. quinquefasciatus. Ovicidal activity was determined against C. quinquefasciatus mosquito tovarious concentrations ranging from 100 to 600 mg/L under the laboratory conditions. Among five solvent testedthe maximum efficacy was observed in the leaf and seed methanol crude extract was found to be most effectivefor ovicidal activity against vector mosquito. The extract of methanol exerted 100% mortality at 500-600 mg/Lagainst C. quinquefasciatus. From the result, it can be concluded the crude extract of P. dulce was a potentialcandidate to develop newer and safer ovicides against C. quinquefasciatus
Measurement of Inclusive W and Z Boson Production Cross Sections in pp Collisions at s√=8  TeV
A measurement of total and fiducial inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections in pp collisions at s√=8  TeV is presented. Electron and muon final states are analyzed in a data sample collected with the CMS detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.2±0.5  pb−1. The measured total inclusive cross sections times branching fractions are σ(pp→WX)×B(W→ℓν)=12.21±0.03(stat)±0.24(syst)±0.32(lum)  nb and σ(pp→ZX)×B(Z→ℓ+ℓ−)=1.15±0.01(stat)±0.02(syst)±0.03(lum)  nb for the dilepton mass in the range of 60—120 GeV. The measured values agree with next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD cross section calculations. Ratios of cross sections are reported with a precision of 2%. This is the first measurement of inclusive W and Z boson production in proton-proton collisions at s√=8  TeV
TA treatment of depression : a hermeneutic single-case efficacy design study - ‘Caterina’
This study is the second of a series of seven, and
belongs to the second Italian systematic replication of
findings from two previous series (Widdowson 2012a,
2012b, 2012c, 2013; Benelli, 2016a, 2016b, 2016c) that
investigated the effectiveness of a manualised
transactional analysis treatment for depression through
Hermeneutic Single-Case Efficacy Design. The therapist
was a white Italian woman with 10 years of clinical
experience and the client, Caterina, was a 28-year old
white Italian woman who attended 16 sessions of
transactional analysis psychotherapy. Caterina satisfied
DSM-5 criteria for major depressive disorder with
generalized anxiety disorder. The conclusion of the
judges was that this was an outstanding good-outcome
case: the depressive symptoms showed an early clinical
and reliable improvement, maintained till the 6 months
follow-up, accompanied by reductions in anxiety
symptoms, global distress and severity of personal
problems. Adherence to the manualised treatment for
depression appears good to excellent. In this case study,
transactional analysis treatment for depression has
proven its efficacy in treating major depressive disorder
in comorbidity with anxiety disorder
Insights on Funeral Practices and Insects Associated with the Tombs of King Ferrante II d'Aragona and Other Renaissance Nobles
The impressive Sacristy of the Basilica of San Domenico Maggiore contains 38 wooden sarcophagi with the bodies of 10 Aragonese princes and other Neapolitan nobles, who died in the 15th and 16th centuries. To improve the knowledge about the entomofauna associated with bodies in archaeological contexts, herein we provide insights on the funerary practices and the insect community associated to Ferrante II King of Naples and other Italian Renaissance mummies of the Aragonese dynasty buried in the Basilica of St. Domenico Maggiore. We identified 842 insect specimens: 88% were Diptera (Muscidae, Fanniidae, and Phoridae), followed by 9% Lepidoptera (Tineidae) and 3% Coleoptera (Dermestidae and Ptinidae). Ninety-seven percent of the specimens were collected from the coffin of Francesco Ferdinando d'Avalos, which was the best preserved. A lack of fly species characterizing the first colonization waves of exposed bodies was noted. The most common fly was the later colonizing muscid Hydrotaea capensis (Wiedemann); only a few Fanniidae (Fannia spp.) were retrieved. The lack of blowflies, coupled with recording H. capensis as the dominant fly, supports our hypothesis that corpses have been kept indoors for a long time under confined environmental conditions. Other explanations include odorous oils/balms having been used in the embalming process, causing the delay or stopping the arrival of first colonizer flies. Hermetically sealing of the coffin with bitumen may also have played a role in preventing access to the corpses. This scenario describes a historical context characterized by a well-advanced knowledge of body preparation, with specific burial techniques adopted for nobles
Biosurfactants produced by Bacillus subtilis A1 and Pseudomonas stutzeri NA3 reduce longevity and fecundity of Anopheles stephensi and show high toxicity against young instars
Anopheles stephensi acts as vector of Plasmodium parasites, which are responsible for malaria in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. Currently, malaria management is a big challenge due to the presence of insecticide-resistant strains as well as to the development of Plasmodium species highly resistant to major antimalarial drugs. Therefore, the present study focused on biosurfactant produced by two bacteria Bacillus subtilis A1 and Pseudomonas stutzeri NA3, evaluating them for insecticidal applications against malaria mosquitoes. The produced biosurfactants were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which confirmed that biosurfactants had a lipopeptidic nature. Both biosurfactants were tested against larvae and pupae of A. stephensi. LC50 values were 3.58 (larva I), 4.92 (II), 5.73 (III), 7.10 (IV), and 7.99 (pupae) and 2.61 (I), 3.68 (II), 4.48 (III), 5.55 (IV), and 6.99 (pupa) for biosurfactants produced by B. subtilis A1 and P. stutzeri NA3, respectively. Treatments with bacterial surfactants led to various physiological changes including longer pupal duration, shorter adult oviposition period, and reduced longevity and fecundity. To the best of our knowledge, there are really limited reports on the mosquitocidal and physiological effects due to biosurfactant produced by bacterial strains. Overall, the toxic activity of these biosurfactant on all young instars of A. stephensi, as well as their major impact on adult longevity and fecundity, allows their further consideration for the development of insecticides in the fight against malaria mosquitoes
Precision agriculture to improve the monitoring and management of tomato insect pests
Human-based monitoring of arthropod pests of agricultural importance is usually a time-consuming and costly activity. The advent of technologies such as automatic traps opens new opportunities for remote monitoring. In this article, we present a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based approach aimed to developing a smart trap for monitoring two major pests of greenhouse tomatoes, namely whiteflies, i.e., Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), and leaf miner flies, Liriomyza spp. (Diptera: Agromyzidae)
A New Wood Surface Flame-Retardant Based on Poly-m-Aramid Electrospun Nanofibers
Poly(meta-phenylene isophtalamide) (PMIA) was processed via electrospinning to provide nanofibrous membranes with randomly and aligned fibers. Mechanical performance of such membranes was evaluated, applying a normalization procedure that takes into account the peculiar morphology of such complex substrate where voids can sum up to almost 80% of the sample volume. Random and aligned fibers membranes are applied onto wood panels to test their fire resistance in cone calorimetry when coated in polyaramidic thin nanofiber mats. Tests highlighted that random fibers provide a better fire protection, increasing Time to Ignition and decreasing the Fire Performance Index. Another important parameter affecting the performance is the adhesive system used to apply the nanofibers onto wood that is able to significantly modify the fire performance of the polyaramidic-coated wood panels.
