    Confrontation as a Coping Strategy to Protect Women\u27s Mental and Physical Health

    Women suffer harmful consequences for mental and physical health after being exposed to sexism. In this study, I explored confrontation as a coping mechanism to protect women’s mental and physical health following an experience of sexism. This study consisted of a mock job search review in which the participant was exposed to blatant sexism and was instructed to confront or ignore the sexism. The participants completed measures of perceived sexism, psychological wellbeing, mental health, and physical health following the committee meeting. I hypothesized that women who were instructed to confront would do so and those instructed to ignore would not. I also expected that women in the confrontation condition would report higher psychological wellbeing, better mental health, and better physical health than those in the ignore condition. I found the manipulation of confrontation was effective, though I suggest some improvements for future research. My findings also pointed to initial support of confrontation as a protective mechanism for women’s psychological wellbeing, mental health, and physical health after experiencing sexism

    Anisotropic valence-->core x-ray fluorescence from a [Rh(en)3][Mn(N)(CN)5]·H2O single crystal: Experimental results and density functional calculations

    High resolution x-ray fluorescence spectra have been recorded for emission in different directions from a single crystal of the compound [Rh(en)3][Mn(N)(CN)5]·H2O. The spectra are interpreted by comparison with density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations. The Kbeta[double-prime] line, which is strongly polarized along the Mn–N axis, can be viewed as an N(2s)-->Mn(1s) transition, and the angular dependence is understood within the dipole approximation. The so-called Kbeta2,5 region has numerous contributions but is dominated by Mn(4p) and C(2s)-->Mn(1s) transitions. Transition energy splittings are found in agreement with those of calculated occupied molecular orbitals to within 1 eV.     Imposing high-symmetry and tuneable geometry on lanthanide centres with chelating Pt and Pd metalloligands

    Exploitation of HSAB preferences allows for high-yield, one-pot syntheses of lanthanide complexes chelated by two Pd or Pt metalloligands, [MII(SAc)4]2− (SAc− = thioacetate, M = Pd, Pt). The resulting complexes with 8 oxygen donors surrounding the lanthanides can be isolated in crystallographically tetragonal environments as either [NEt4]+ (space group: P4/mcc) or [PPh4]+ (space group: P4/n) salts. In the case of M = Pt, the complete series of lanthanide complexes has been structurally characterized as the [NEt4]+ salts (except for Ln = Pm), while the [PPh4]+ salts have been structurally characterized for Ln = Gd–Er, Y. For M = Pd, selected lanthanide complexes have been structurally characterized as both salts. The only significant structural difference between salts of the two counter ions is the resulting twist angle connecting tetragonal prismatic and tetragonal anti-prismatic configurations, with the [PPh4]+ salts approaching ideal D4d symmetry very closely (φ = 44.52–44.61°) while the [NEt4]+ salts exhibit intermediate twist angles in the interval φ = 17.28–27.41°, the twist increasing as the complete 4f series is traversed. Static magnetic properties for the latter half of the lanthanide series are found to agree well in the high temperature limit with the expected Curie behavior. Perpendicular and parallel mode EPR spectroscopy on randomly oriented powder samples and single crystals of the Gd complexes with respectively Pd- and Pt-based metalloligands demonstrate the nature of the platinum metal to strongly affect the spectra. Consistent parametrization of all of the EPR spectra reveals the main difference to stem from a large difference in the magnitude of the leading axial term, B02, this being almost four times larger for the Pt-based complexes as compared to the Pd analogues, indicating a direct Pt(5dz2)–Ln interaction and an arguable coordination number of 10 rather than 8. The parametrization of the EPR spectra also confirms that off-diagonal operators are associated with non-zero parameters for the [NEt4]+ salts, while only contributing minimally for the [PPh4]+ salts in which lanthanide coordination approximates D4d point group symmetry closely.LHD acknowledges support from NSF-CCT EMT 08-517.     A Novel Way to Fenestrate a Type B Dissection Flap Using Electrocautery

    Thoracic endovascular repair (TEVAR) is the current therapy of choice for treating type B aortic dissections. This is accomplished by covering the entry tear that is distal to the left subclavian artery. When the dissection flap extends into the visceral vessels it is common to have a type 1b endoleak into the false lumen from the visceral aortic tears. When the supra-celiac aorta is of normal caliber, then fenestration of the dissection flap proximal to the visceral vessels and sealing this area with a TEVAR stent graft eliminates the type 1 b endoleak. Fenestration also helps when there is distal ischemia from an over-pressured false lumen. Fenestration has been described using needles to cross the septum and balloons to tear open the septum. We describe a novel way of crossing the septum using electrocautery delivered through a wire tip then fenestrating the septum using electrocautery delivered over a 1 mm area of uninsulated wire to cut the septum. The use of electrocautery creates a controlled and deliberate aortic fenestration during endovascular repair of a type B dissection. This case is a 59 year old male who presented with an enlarging thoracic aneurysm secondary to a residual type B artic dissection (Figure 1). We elected to treat this with a TEVAR. A TX2 thoracic endograft (Cook Vascular, IN) was inserted into the thoracic aorta and deployed covering the entry tear (Figure 2). We crossed from the true lumen to the false lumen using a 0.014 Confienza wire (Figure 3). We snared the wire in the false lumen and pulled the wire out through the contralateral groin. Then we scraped the insulation off 1 mm segment ofa 0.014 Astato wire. This was kinked at the area of denuded insulation. We then introduced the wire into the patient and positioned the uncovered wire over the dissection septum. Using the electrocautery, we made a 3 cm cut in the septum (Figure 4). Finally, we deployed a distal TEVAR stent landing the distal segments in the fenestration giving us a distal seal (Figure 5). Post-procedure CTA showed complete exclusion of the aneurysm with no distal endoleaks.     Dynamics of membrane nanotubes coated with I-BAR

    Membrane deformation is a necessary step in a number of cellular processes such as filopodia and invadopodia formation and has been shown to involve membrane shaping proteins containing membrane binding domains from the IRSp53-MIM protein family. In reconstituted membranes the membrane shaping domains can efficiently deform negatively charged membranes into tubules without any other proteins present. Here, we show that the IM domain (also called I-BAR domain) from the protein ABBA, forms semi-flexible nanotubes protruding into Giant Unilamellar lipid Vesicles (GUVs). By simultaneous quantification of tube intensity and tubular shape we find both the diameter and stiffness of the nanotubes. I-BAR decorated tubes were quantified to have a diameter of ~50 nm and exhibit no stiffening relative to protein free tubes of the same diameter. At high protein density the tubes are immobile whereas at lower density the tubes diffuse freely on the surface of the GUV. Bleaching experiments of the fluorescently tagged I-BAR confirmed that the mobility of the tubes correlates with the mobility of the I-BAR on the GUV membrane. Finally, at low density of I-BAR the protein upconcentrates within tubes protruding into the GUVs. This implies that I-BAR exhibits strong preference for negatively curved membranes

    PT-Symmetric Electronics

    We show both theoretically and experimentally that a pair of inductively coupled active LRC circuits (dimer), one with amplification and another with an equivalent amount of attenuation, display all the features which characterize a wide class of non-Hermitian systems which commute with the joint parity-time PT operator: typical normal modes, temporal evolution, and scattering processes. Utilizing a Liouvilian formulation, we can define an underlying PT-symmetric Hamiltonian, which provides important insight for understanding the behavior of the system. When the PT-dimer is coupled to transmission lines, the resulting scattering signal reveals novel features which reflect the PT-symmetry of the scattering target. Specifically we show that the device can show two different behaviors simultaneously, an amplifier or an absorber, depending on the direction and phase relation of the interrogating waves. Having an exact theory, and due to its relative experimental simplicity, PT-symmetric electronics offers new insights into the properties of PT-symmetric systems which are at the forefront of the research in mathematical physics and related fields.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure

    Aortic pseudoaneurysm - An unusual presentation

    Introduction: The esophagus is a frequent site of foreign body impaction, but esophageal perforation and subsequent aortic pseudoaneurysms, and aorto-esophageal fistulas are very rare but potentially life-threatening complications. We present a case of foreign body ingestion, complicated by erosion into the aorta causing a mycotic aneurysm. Case description: We introduce the case of a 60 year-old male with abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue and fevers. Blood cultures grew out gram-positive cocci. A CT scan revealed a distal thoracic aortic saccular aneurysm, with a 2.8 cm linear metallic body penetrating the inferior border of the aneurysm, and intraluminal thrombus formation. CT of the abdomen revealed portal vein thrombosis, splenic and hepatic abscesses. An Esophagogastroduodenoscopy was unremarkable. The patient was started on the appropriate antibiotic therapy. He was then taken to the operating room for an open thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair with an interposition cryopreserved graft, with an intercostal muscle flap. A metal bristle was removed. He had an uneventful postoperative course and was discharged home on post-operative day 17. Follow-up CTA showed resolution of the infection and satisfactory repair. Post-operative esophagram showed no esophageal injury. Conclusion: We describe a case of a bristle from a metallic barbeque brush that was ingested. This penetrated the esophagus causing a mycotic aneurysm with septic embolization to the spleen and liver. Our successful treatment approach involved open aortic repair with an interposition cryopreserved graft, and an intercostal muscle flap.https://scholarlycommons.henryford.com/merf2020caserpt/1100/thumbnail.jp
