Reasonable accommodations for a Japanese Deaf student: A case study of an English pronunciation class

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to identify strategies and methodologies of teaching English listening and pronunciation skills to Deaf and/or vocally impaired students, while concomitantly examining the question of what constitutes reasonable accommodation. This case study followed the experience of a Japanese Deaf and vocally impaired student and the teacher, who together navigate an (L2) English pronunciation course at a Japanese college

The effects of emotional intelligence in everyday life : what counselors can do to reinforce E.I. in couples counselings

    Get PDF
This paper will explore the aspects that make up emotional intelligence, compare IQ to EQ, and explain how emotional intelligence plays a role in the schools and in the workplace. This paper will identify how counselors can guide and support couples to recognize their feelings and develop healthy relationships with their spouses. Although techniques involving emotional intelligence skills are important for clients in individual sessions, there has been further research done with couples regarding therapy work and EI (Goleman, 1995). Therefore, this paper will focus on emotional intelligence in couples counselors, but will touch on EI in the schools and workplace as well. Counselors must be aware of how EI components act as a helping concept when building relationships with others and managing oneself

Non-Christian, Japanese College Students’ Perspectives of Engaging with God through the Participatory Components of Christian Worship

    Get PDF
This study seeks to examine the extent to which non-Christian college students in Japan perceive their engagement with the biblical God while participating in daily chapel services at Kyūshū Lutheran College. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, analyzing survey and focus group data to explore whether a relationship exists between students’ participation in chapel committee activities and their perceived spiritual engagement. Responses to Lynn Underwood’s Daily Spiritual Experience Survey, the Centrality of Religiosity Scale, and the Centrality of Buddhist Religiosity Scale are combined to create a general spiritual profile of respondents. Worship leaders and missionaries who are in positions of presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ in primarily non-Christian communities will be both encouraged and challenged by the results of this research project. Christian leaders serving in Japan may be surprised by the findings that previous notions that Japanese tend to identify and live with co-existing realms of spirituality are corroborated, but in this study, the belief and behavioral distinctions typically attributed to Shintō and Buddhist beliefs or worldview contradict existing literature. Analysis of survey data shows that the strongest indicator of engagement during worship is chapel committee participation. The components with which students perceive the most heightened engagement includes singing, listening to Scripture being read, and the benediction. Participation in music groups shows a slightly elevated correlation to spiritual engagement during worship, and seems to be a context within which healthy forms of pre-evangelization can take place. Data from this research provides practical starting points for meaningful future research possibilities and reveals opportunities for continued ministry and evangelism in Japan

CAN LOW HAMSTRING ACTIVATION EXPLAIN ACL-INJURY? A CASE STUDY

    Get PDF
The neuromuscular coordination, and especially the activation of the hamstrings have been hypothesised as very important for knee stability during side-step cutting and other movements. The present study is a case study and presents data from a single subject, who participated in an experiment with EMG recordings quadriceps and hamstring activity during side-step cutting. Eight months after the original experiment the subject suffered an ACL-injury performing a side-step cutting maneuver during a team handball match. The study showed that prior to the injury the subject had much lower preactivity EMG in his lateral hamstring than the rest of the subjects. This may potentially result in lesser rotational stability, and may support the hypothesis that hamstring activity is important for ACL-protection during side-step cutting

A new species of Characithecium (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae) from external surface and gills of two species of Astyanax (Ostariophysi:Characidae) in southern Brazil

    Get PDF
A new species of Characithecium, a genus of monogenean parasites of Neotropical characids, is described from specimens collected on the bodysurface and gills of Astyanax aff. fasciatus and Astyanax jacuhiensis from Lake Guaíba, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The new species issimilar to Characithecium costaricensis, but differs by having the haptor separated from the body by a long peduncle, and by having an accessorypiece composed of 2 subunits in the male copulatory complex – 1 ventral pincer-shaped at the distal end, and 1 dorsal with an expanded rod-shapedproximal end and the distal end containing 3 elongated projections–, and the dorsal bar usually presenting a small median elevation in the anteriormargin. This study increases the number of species of Characitecium to 7 and expands our knowledge on the diversity of monogenean parasitesof characids

Specimens of Rhabdochona (Rhabdochona) acuminata (Molin, 1860) were collected in Astyanax aff. fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) from Lake Guaíba, municipalities of Guaíba (30°08.28'S, 51°18.53'W) and Barra do Ribeiro (30°17.11'S, 51°18.01'W), southern Brazil. In the present study, the prevalence of R. (R.) acuminata was low (1.43%) when compared to other studies performed with Astyanax spp. from Brazil. The specimens of R. (R.) acuminata showed some morphological differences (mainly the deirids) that have not yet been reported for the species. This is the first report of R. (R.) acuminata from Lake Guaíba, filling a gap of occurrence of this nematode in South America.

A COMPARISON OF KINEMATICS BETWEEN ELITE HANDBALL PLAYERS WITH AND WITHOUT SHOULDER PAIN AFTER A FUNCTIONAL FATIGUE PROTOCOL

    Get PDF
Shoulder pain are common in team handball, and players often continue playing despite pain. The aim of the study was to investigate whether a functional fatigue protocol(FFP) affects throwing kinematics, and whether this effect was different between players with and without shoulder pain. Thirty female players performed maximal standing throws before and after a FFP, while joint kinematics were measured with eight cameras (Vicon T40, Oxford, UK). The main findings were that fatigue affected throwing velocity positively. Some kinematic parameters in both groups were affected, but the effect on kinematics was not the same in both groups, especially timing of the maximal shoulder extension and minimal internal shoulder rotations seems to change differently between the groups after a FFP. No previous studies have investigated, whether functional fatigue influences throwing kinematic differently at team handball players who are playing with or without shoulder pain.
