No Habla Espanol: Are Monolingual Teachers Getting the Support They Need?

    Get PDF
For this Capstone Project, the researchers investigated how monolingual teachers view the support and resources they received to teach English Language Learners (ELL) and what they thought could be done to improve their teaching effectiveness. An evidence based argument is offered that monolingual teachers were not being provided with effective support and resources. More specifically, three themes emerged from an analysis of the data obtained from interviews of monolingual teachers and administrators. Based on the emergent themes, an action was undertaken to help monolingual teachers better address the needs of ELLs. This is an important issue for monolingual teachers because the research provided options that the district could implement in order to increase their ability to successfully work with ELLs

Providing ramps in rearing aviaries affects laying pullet distribution, behavior and bone properties

To ensure that laying hens can make full use of the various resources within an aviary barn and develop optimum bone health while minimizing keel bone fractures, appropriate cognitive and bone development during rearing is critical. Given previous work documenting the benefit of ramps that could be used by hens to transition between tiers and reduced incidence of keel bone fractures, the project examined the provision of ramps during the rearing period, which birds could use voluntarily from 10 d of age. We hypothesized that the provision of ramps would influence how pullets distribute within the aviary and how birds vertically move between the aviary tiers leading to greater bone strength in birds with access to ramps. The study used 2 flocks of laying hen chicks (Lohmann Selected Leghorn; 4,800 chicks/flock) that were reared in one of 2 commercial rearing facilities with each divided into 4 pens (600 chicks/pen) to allow for treatment assignments. In 2 pens of each facility, ramps were installed from each of the 3 tiers providing a walking path that birds could access from 10 d of age. Video recordings were made at 4 times per day at 3, 4, 5, 8, 11, and 14 wk of age to determine the relative distribution of birds and the number of transitions between each tier. At 16 wk of age, 10 birds per pen per flock were killed and the tibia and humerus collected for biomechanical assessment; the keel was also collected for bone mineral density via computed tomography. Chicks/pullets within pens provided ramps demonstrated a rapid use of the upper tiers of the aviary paralleling greater usage of ramps between all aviary levels. Despite the ramp and tier usage following the predicted pattern, differences in bone strength were opposite than expected for tibiae and may reflect the different behaviors pens with ramps and without ramps would allow. Results support the position that provision of ramps within a commercial system will lead to voluntary usage of the ramps with long term effects on the distribution of birds in the system throughout the rearing period.Egg Industry Cente

Generación de conocimiento tecnológico y políticas de innovación : dimensiones e interrelaciones

    Get PDF
____________________________________________There are prominent differences in the evolution of the competitiveness and technological progress in the international context. This is a consequence of a dissimilar structure of National Systems of Innovation, which analysis is the main aim of this paper. For this purpose, we propose and take into account an analysis framework that is built up by four dimensions: public administra-tions, interaction between public system of R&D and industry/entrepreneurial behavior, finance system and mobility of skill labor/education system. Each dimension represents a key factor to explain the intensity of the technologi-cal knowledge generation and flow between the agents involved in innovation processes, and the impact on the route of technological learning

This paper examine the influence of gender diversity in top management teams on the success of the IPO of research-based firms, and how critical indicators of innovation capabilities for those types of firms can mediate the gender effect. We conducted a longitudinal study of a sample of dedicated biotechnology firms that that completed an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States during 1983-2009. This study shows that female executive managers have a negative and significant effect on IPO success, although the effect of innovation capabilities attenuates and causes no significant influence of such type of demographic diversity in management teams.Universidad de Málaga. Get PDF
Bovine brucellosis is a disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans (zoonoses), caused by bacteria of the Brucella gender. These microorganisms have an affinity for the reproductive system of both males and females, causing orchitis, abortion in the last third of gestation, together with retained placenta and metritis, and can even cause infertility. The aim of this study was to establish the apparent prevalence of bovine brucellosis in the province of Pastaza, through two serological tests: Rose Bengal and Slow Serum Agglutination in Tube with EDTA and risk factors associated with the occurrence and continuance of this disease in each of the farms where this study took place. The prevalence found in the province per farm was 3.4% and per animal was 1.04%. We identified 14 risk factors of which the most important were the type of operation (p value = 0.001) and mobilization (p value = 0.22). This study demonstrated that bovine brucellosis affected herds in the province of Pastaza and the only statistically significant risk factor is the type of exploitation

Corporate social responsibility and total quality management: As an antecedent of hotel performance

    Get PDF
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and total quality management (TQM) are considered potential sources in order to obtain a sustainable competitive advantage. This paper examines how the implementation of both TQM and CSR influences the results of hotels’ stakeholders as an antecedent of business performance. An empirical study of Spanish hotels from the Andalusian region shows that the adoption of such approaches improves the capacity of hotels to create benefits for their stakeholders, and these results have a positive effect on hotel performance. The study also provides evidence of the complementarity of both management philosophies as TQM can enhance the development of CSR.Universidad de Málaga. Purpose: This study investigates the link between diversity in management and CEO positions and firm innovation. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect that women and ethnic diversity in management and CEO positions have on the development of outstanding innovation in firms. Design/methodology/approach: This paper conducts an empirical analysis to investigate these relationships over time using a large panel database of 1,345 publicly US traded firms. Findings: Results revealed that gender and ethnic diversity at all levels of management exhibited a robust positive association with superior innovation competence. This finding remains robust when alternative proxies for innovation are employed. In contrast, the authors found that women and ethnic minorities at the CEO level had no significant influence. Originality/value: Considering an output measure of innovation, the authors explore the effect of gender and ethnic minority groups in management positions as well as at the CEO level, rather than focusing only on top management teams or board of directors. The authors offer new practical insights regarding the manager selection process that are also useful to support public policy initiatives. The authors acknowledge the financial support of the COMPSOS Project (PID 2020-117313RB-I00), funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and of the SOSTEMPRE (B-SEJ-682-UGR20) Project, funded by PROGRAMA OPERATIVO FEDER ANDALUCIA 2014–2020.
