Study of double-beta decay with germanium detectors
The neutrinoless double-beta decay is widely considered to be the easiest way to discriminate between the Dirac and the Majorana nature of neutrinos. The study of such process is being carried out with different isotopes and methods
for more than two decades, but no result is yet univocally accepted by the Physics community. One of the most developed technologies makes use of germanium crystals, in which the radioactive source and the detector coincide. A brief review will be given about the characteristics of germanium experiments, the expected signal, the past and the present experiments. A more accurate study will be dedicated to the GERDA experiment, which is presently at the beginning of its data taking
Characterization of light production and transport in tellurium dioxide crystals
Simultaneous measurement of phonon and light signatures is an effective way to reduce the backgrounds and increase the sensitivity of CUPID, a next-generation bolometric neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) experiment. Light emission in tellurium dioxide (TeO2) crystals, one of the candidate materials for CUPID, is dominated by faint Cherenkov radiation, and the high refractive index of TeO2 complicates light collection. Positive identification of 0νββ events therefore requires high-sensitivity light detectors and careful optimization of light transport. A detailed microphysical understanding of the optical properties of TeO2 crystals is essential for such optimization. We present a set of quantitative measurements of light production and transport in a cubic TeO2 crystal, verified with a complete optical model and calibrated against a UVT acrylic standard. We measure the optical surface properties of the crystal, and set stringent limits on the amount of room-temperature scintillation in TeO2 for β and α particles of 5.3 and 8 photons/MeV, respectively, at 90% confidence. The techniques described here can be used to optimize and verify the particle identification capabilities of CUPID
Analysis of the Inner Fluid-Dynamics of Scroll Compressors and Comparison between CFD Numerical and Modelling Approaches
Scroll compressors are widely adopted machines in both refrigeration systems and heat
pumps. However, their efficiency is basically poor and constitutes the main bottleneck for improving
the overall system performance. In fact, due to the complex machine fluid dynamics, scroll design
is mainly based on theoretical and/or semi-empirical approaches. Designs strategies that do not
guarantee an in-depth analysis of the machine behavior can be supplemented with a Computation
Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach. To this purpose, in the present work, the scroll compressor inner
fluid dynamics is numerically analyzed in detail using two CFD software and two different modelling
strategies for the axial gap. The analysis of the fluid evolution within the scroll wraps reveals unsteady
phenomena developing during the suction and discharge phases, amplified by the axial clearance
with negative impact on the main fluid flow (e.g., 1213% of average mass flow rate for an axial gap
of 30 \ub5) and on the scroll performance (e.g., +26% of average absorbed power for an axial gap of
30 \ub5). In terms of accuracy, the k-" offers good performance on the estimation of average quantities
but proves to be inadequate for capturing the complexity of the unsteady phenomena caused by the
axial gap (e.g., 1219% of the absorbed power in case of perfect tip seal). The need for considering
specific geometric details in design procedures is highlighted, and guidelines on the choice of the
most suitable numerical model are provided depending on the analysis need
Radon mitigation during the installation of the CUORE decay detector
CUORE - the Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events - is an
experiment searching for the neutrinoless double-beta () decay
of Te with an array of 988 TeO crystals operated as bolometers at
10 mK in a large dilution refrigerator. With this detector, we aim for a
Te decay half-life sensitivity of y
with 5 y of live time, and a background index of
counts/keV/kg/y. Making an effort to maintain radiopurity by minimizing the
bolometers' exposure to radon gas during their installation in the cryostat, we
perform all operations inside a dedicated cleanroom environment with a
controlled radon-reduced atmosphere. In this paper, we discuss the design and
performance of the CUORE Radon Abatement System and cleanroom, as well as a

We discuss the impact of the cosmological measurements on the predictions of the Majorana mass of the neutrinos, the parameter probed by neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments. Using a minimal set of assumptions, we quantify the probabilities of discovering neutrinoless double-beta decay and introduce a new graphical representation that could be of interest for the community
Development of the Bristol Rabbit Pain Scale (BRPS):A multidimensional composite pain scale specific to rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
A species-specific composite pain scale is a prerequisite for adequate pain assessment. The aim of this study was to develop a multidimensional pain scale specific to rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) called the Bristol Rabbit Pain Scale (BRPS). The scale was developed over five phases using a unique combination of methods: focus groups and behavioural observation. The first two phases aimed at identifying descriptors to describe a rabbit in pain, and then reducing their number, both using focus groups. A total of 72 pain descriptors were grouped under six categories (Demeanour, Posture, Facial expression, Attention to the painful area, Audible and Other) and ‘No pain’ descriptors were added. The third phase aimed to confirm, through video observation of rabbits, the categories and descriptors previously described, to reject those terms that were ambiguous, and identify any new descriptors that had not been included in the previous list of descriptors. This led to the rejection of the categories Audible and Attention to the painful area and of 34 descriptors. Seven new descriptors were identified. The last two phases constructed the final format of the BRPS by refining the categories, ranking the descriptors on an ordinal scale and testing the internal reliability of the scale using Cronbach’s alpha test. This led to a composite pain scale of six categories (Demeanour, Posture, Locomotion, Ears, Eyes and Grooming) with four intensities of pain (0, 1, 2, and 3), a total score of 0–18, and a high Cronbach’s alpha coefficient (alpha = 0.843). This BRPS fills an important gap in the field of rabbit medicine and has the potential to improve the assessment and management of pain in rabbits providing veterinary professionals with a novel multidimensional pain assessment tool. Further studies will investigate the clinical utility, validity and reliability of the BRPS

Testing the inverted neutrino mass ordering with neutrinoless double-β decay
We quantify the extent to which future experiments will test the existence of neutrinoless double-beta decay mediated by light neutrinos with inverted-ordered masses. While it remains difficult to compare measurements performed with different isotopes, we find that future searches will fully test the inverted ordering scenario, as a global, multi-isotope endeavor. They will also test other possible mechanisms driving the decay, including a large uncharted region of the allowed parameter space assuming that neutrino masses follow the normal ordering
