ATPase cycle and DNA unwinding kinetics of RecG helicase
The superfamily 2 bacterial helicase, RecG, is a monomeric enzyme with a role in DNA repair by reversing stalled replication forks. The helicase must act specifically and rapidly to prevent replication fork collapse. We have shown that RecG binds tightly and rapidly to four-strand oligonucleotide junctions, which mimic a stalled replication fork. The helicase unwinds such DNA junctions with a step-size of approximately four bases per ATP hydrolyzed. To gain an insight into this mechanism, we used fluorescent stopped-flow and quenched-flow to measure individual steps within the ATPase cycle of RecG, when bound to a DNA junction. The fluorescent ATP analogue, mantATP, was used throughout to determine the rate limiting steps, effects due to DNA and the main states in the cycle. Measurements, when possible, were also performed with unlabeled ATP to confirm the mechanism. The data show that the chemical step of hydrolysis is the rate limiting step in the cycle and that this step is greatly accelerated by bound DNA. The ADP release rate is similar to the cleavage rate, so that bound ATP and ADP would be the main states during the ATP cycle. Evidence is provided that the main structural rearrangements, which bring about DNA unwinding, are linked to these states
Stochastic Aggregation: Scaling Properties
We study scaling properties of stochastic aggregation processes in one
dimension. Numerical simulations for both diffusive and ballistic transport
show that the mass distribution is characterized by two independent nontrivial
exponents corresponding to the survival probability of particles and monomers.
The overall behavior agrees qualitatively with the mean-field theory. This
theory also provides a useful approximation for the decay exponents, as well as

Synthesis and Properties of Dipyridylcyclopentenes
A short and general route to the substituted dipyridylcyclopentenes was explored and several new compounds belonging to this new group of diarylethenes were synthesized. The study of their photochromic and thermochromic properties shows that the rate of the thermal ring opening is strongly dependent on the polarity of the solvent.
A structural equation modeling study on productivity investments in tourism security of a multi-islands province: Community perspectives for Community-Based Tourism model of Romblon, the Philippines
Sustainable Tourism through Community Development concept developed the niche of Community-Based Tourism (CBT). This niche is seen as having a great impact on rural communities in the Asian Region known for its pro-poor implications that deliver socio-cultural, ecological, political, and economic benefits to communities. This study aims at investigating the potentials of CBT specifically in the multi-island province of Romblon in the Philippines. Using the Extended Theory of Sustainable Development, the researcher attempts to examine the impacts of tourism to shed light on its costs and benefits for the rural communities of Romblon. Analyses on LGUs and Communities through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed. Results revealed that tourism positively affect the extended parameters of sustainable development. This could be a conclusive basis for a Public Policy Development in the Multi-Island Province
Exact solution of a one-dimensional Boltzmann equation for a granular tracer particle
We consider a one-dimensional system consisting of a granular tracer particle
of mass in a bath of thermalized particles each of mass . When the mass
ratio, , is equal to the coefficient of restitution, , the system
maps to a a one-dimensional elastic gas. In this case, Boltzmann equation can
be solved exactly. We also obtain expressions for the velocity autocorrelation
function and the diffusion coefficient. Numerical simulations of the Boltzmann
equation are performed for where no analytical solution is
available. It appears that the dynamical features remain qualitatively similar

Characterization of the blue emission of Tm/Er co-implanted GaN
Comparative studies have been carried out on the cathodoluminescence (CL) and photoluminescence (PL) properties of GaN implanted with Tin and GaN co-implanted with Tin and a low concentration of Er. Room temperature CL spectra were acquired in an electron probe microanalyser to investigate the rare earth emission. The room temperature CL intensity exhibits a strong dependence on the annealing temperature of the implanted samples. The results of CL temperature dependence are reported for blue emission (similar to 477 nm) which is due to intra 4f-shell electron transitions ((1)G(4)-> H-3(6)) associated with Tm3+ ions. The 477 nm blue CL emission is enhanced strongly as the annealing temperature increases up to 1200 degrees C. Blue PL emission has also been observed from the sample annealed at 1200 degrees C. To our knowledge, this is the first observation of blue PL emission from Tin implanted GaN samples. Intra-4f transitions from the D-1(2) level (similar to 465 nm emission lines) of Tm3+ ions in GaN have been observed in GaN:Tm films at temperatures between 20-200 K. We will discuss the temperature dependent Tm3+ emission in both GaN:Tm,Er and GaN:Tm samples
Edge scaling limits for a family of non-Hermitian random matrix ensembles
A family of random matrix ensembles interpolating between the GUE and the
Ginibre ensemble of matrices with iid centered complex Gaussian
entries is considered. The asymptotic spectral distribution in these models is
uniform in an ellipse in the complex plane, which collapses to an interval of
the real line as the degree of non-Hermiticity diminishes. Scaling limit
theorems are proven for the eigenvalue point process at the rightmost edge of
the spectrum, and it is shown that a non-trivial transition occurs between
Poisson and Airy point process statistics when the ratio of the axes of the
supporting ellipse is of order . In this regime, the family of
limiting probability distributions of the maximum of the real parts of the
eigenvalues interpolates between the Gumbel and Tracy-Widom distributions.Comment: 44 page
The gravitational analogue to the hydrogen atom (A summer study at the borders of quantum mechanics and general relativity)
This article reports on a student summer project performed in 2006 at the
University of Frankfurt. It is addressed to undergraduate students familiar
with the basic principles of relativistic quantum mechanics and general
relativity. The aim of the project was to study the Dirac equation in curved
space time. To obtain the general relativistic Dirac equation we use the
formulation of gravity as a gauge theory in the first part. After these general
considerations we restrict the further discussion to the special case of the
Schwarzschild metric. This setting corresponds to the hydrogen atom, with the
electromagnetic field replaced by gravity. Although there is a singularity at
the event horizon it turns out that a regular solution of the time independent
Dirac equation exists. Finally the Dirac equation is solved numerically using
