    On electromagnetics of an isotropic chiral medium moving at constant velocity

    A medium which is an isotropic chiral medium from the perspective of a co-moving observer is a Faraday chiral medium (FCM) from the perspective of a non-co-moving observer. The Tellegen constitutive relations for this FCM are established. By an extension of the Beltrami field concept, these constitutive relations are exploited to show that planewave propagation is characterized by four generally independent wavenumbers. This FCM can support negative phase velocity at certain translational velocities and with certain wavevectors, even though the corresponding isotropic chiral medium does not. The constitutive relations and Beltrami--like fields are also used to develop a convenient spectral representation of the dyadic Green functions for the FCM

    Perturbation Theory for Metastable States of the Dirac Equation with Quadratic Vector Interaction

    The spectral problem of the Dirac equation in an external quadratic vector potential is considered using the methods of the perturbation theory. The problem is singular and the perturbation series is asymptotic, so that the methods for dealing with divergent series must be used. Among these, the Distributional Borel Sum appears to be the most well suited tool to give answers and to describe the spectral properties of the system. A detailed investigation is made in one and in three space dimensions with a central potential. We present numerical results for the Dirac equation in one space dimension: these are obtained by determining the perturbation expansion and using the Pad\'e approximants for calculating the distributional Borel transform. A complete agreement is found with previous non-perturbative results obtained by the numerical solution of the singular boundary value problem and the determination of the density of the states from the continuous spectrum.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur

    Gradient catastrophe and flutter in vortex filament dynamics

    Gradient catastrophe and flutter instability in the motion of vortex filament within the localized induction approximation are analyzed. It is shown that the origin if this phenomenon is in the gradient catastrophe for the dispersionless Da Rios system which describes motion of filament with slow varying curvature and torsion. Geometrically this catastrophe manifests as a rapid oscillation of a filament curve in a point that resembles the flutter of airfoils. Analytically it is the elliptic umbilic singularity in the terminology of the catastrophe theory.     Classification of integrable Weingarten surfaces possessing an sl(2)-valued zero curvature representation

    In this paper we classify Weingarten surfaces integrable in the sense of soliton theory. The criterion is that the associated Gauss equation possesses an sl(2)-valued zero curvature representation with a nonremovable parameter. Under certain restrictions on the jet order, the answer is given by a third order ordinary differential equation to govern the functional dependence of the principal curvatures. Employing the scaling and translation (offsetting) symmetry, we give a general solution of the governing equation in terms of elliptic integrals. We show that the instances when the elliptic integrals degenerate to elementary functions were known to nineteenth century geometers. Finally, we characterize the associated normal congruences

    Microstructure and residual stress evolution during cyclic elastoplastic deformation of AISI316L fabricated via laser powder bed fusion

    In metal additive manufacturing (MAM), microstructural properties such as texture, residual stresses, and dislocation density have emerged as key factors ruling the resulting mechanical performances. In this study, cylindrical AISI 316L specimens, fabricated with laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), were tested under cyclic elastoplastic (EP) deformation using a constant strain amplitude to highlight the evolution of residual stresses (RS), dislocation density and texture with increasing number of EP cycles, N, across the hardening-softening (H–S) transition stage, in the attempt to find correlations between relevant microstructural parameters and macroscopic properties. The structural and microstructural analysis is carried out through whole powder pattern modeling (WPPM) of neutron diffraction (ND) data and Electron Back-Scattering Diffraction (EBSD) analysis. The H–S transition is found to occur within 7–9 cycles, with RS fading out already after 5 cycles. Across the H–S transition, the trend of the maximum tensile stress correlates closely with the trend of WPPM-calculated total dislocation density, suggesting a major role of dislocations’ characteristics in the evolution of macroscopic mechanical properties. EBSD analysis reveals the rearrangement of geometrically necessary dislocations (GND) into cellular structures, and moderate grain refinement, which are deemed to be responsible for the quick fading of RS in the very early stage of EP loading. ND-based texture analysis reveals a (220) preferential orientation retained throughout the EP tests but with orientation density functions (ODFs) changing non-monotonically with N, suggesting preliminary partial randomization of grains around the deformation axis followed by the recovery of crystallographic anisotropy and more localized ODFs

    In pre-hospital care, an accurate and quick diagnosis of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is imperative to promptly kick-off the STEMI network with a direct transfer to the cardiac catheterization laboratory (cath lab) in order to reduce myocardial infarction size and mortality. Aa atherosclerotic plaque rupture is the main mechanism responsible for STEMI. However, in a small percentage of patients, emergency coronarography does not reveal any significant coronary stenosis. The fluoropyrimidine agents such as 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and capecitabine, widely used to treat gastrointestinal, breast, head and neck cancers, either as a single agent or in combination with other chemotherapies, can cause potentially lethal cardiac side effects. Here, we present the case of a patient with 5-FU cardiotoxicity resulting in an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) with recurrent episodes of chest pain and ST-segment elevation.. Our case report highlights the importance of widening the knowledge among cardiologists of the side effects of chemotherapeutic drugs, especially considering the rising number of cancer patients around the world and that fluoropyrimidines are the main treatment for many types of cancer, both in adjuvant and advanced settings

    Impact of Power Outages on Developing Countries: Evidence from Rural Households in Niger Delta, Nigeria

    Nigeria is suffering from the worst energy crisis in its history, resulting in its rural communities being subjected to massive power outages, daily. Energy promotes economic well-being and makes social life worthwhile such that youths are less disposed to violent crimes. This study investigated the consequences of power outages on the social-economic life of rural households in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Primary data were collected through a semi-structured questionnaire circulated among unemployed youth, students, housewives, businessmen and professionals in the area. The study focused on the relationship between power outage and its impact on the everyday life of the people. This study adopted a descriptive research design using 1000 randomly selected members of 44 rural households in the areas mostly affected by incessant power outages. It was found that stunted economic growth, reduced leisure time as well as heightened criminality and insecurity are some of the major results of rampant power outages among rural households in the Niger Delta. It is concluded that power outages have severe negative impact on the social and economic lives of the people. The findings from this research would help improve the outlook of rural communities in Nigeria and other developing countries. Keywords: Nigeria, Power outage, Energy, Electricity, Rural households

    Longitudinal Neuropsychological Assessment of Symptomatic Edema after Subthalamic Nucleus Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery: A Case Series Study

    Severe non-infectious or non-haemorrhagic brain edema surrounding the electrode represents a rare complication of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) surgery. The aim of this study is to report three patients with advanced Parkinson's Disease (PD) who developed symptomatic brain edema after STN-DBS surgery treated with intravenous steroids with a specific profile of reversible cognitive alterations. Patients were both assessed with a comprehensive neuropsychological battery including attention, memory, visuo-spatial and executive tasks. They were also briefly assessed for emotional and behavioural alterations, and for possible limitations in the activities of daily living. Normative data for an Italian population were available for all neuropsychological tests. The patients were firstly assessed before the surgery (baseline) as soon as they became symptomatic for the post-surgery edema and a few more times in follow-up up to ten months. In all patients we observed the resolution of cognitive deficits within six months after surgery with the corresponding reabsorption of edema at brain CT scans. The appearance of post-DBS edema is a fairly frequent and clinically benign event. However, in some rare cases it can be very marked and lead to important clinical-albeit transient-disturbances. These events can compromise, at least from a psychological point of view, the delicate path of patients who undergo DBS and can prolong the post-operative hospital stay. In this setting it could be helpful to perform a brain CT scan in 2-3 days with the aim of detecting the early appearance of edema and treating it before it can constitute a relevant clinical problem
