    Using mesoporous thin films as nano-micro-fluidic tools

    Achieving active control on small amounts of liquids represents a substantial challenge in both scientific and engineering aspects. Imbibition of fluids in bodies with nanoscale dimensions enables the spontaneous propelling of nano-flows because of the powerful capillarity at small-length scales. Peculiarities of nanopore imbibition at the thin film level lead to distinctive capillary transport phenomena of fluids across the nanopore matrix. This particular imbibition also impacts on the behavior of the in-contact liquid micro-volumes. These both features add versatile alternatives to the high interest in the management of femtolitre to microlitres amounts of liquids. Herein, we show a brief discussion-outlook based on recent advances in the design of versatile tools to attain programmable nano/microfluidics using mesoporous thin film platforms.Cited as: Berli, C.     Clinical and psychosocial correlates of post-herpetic neuralgia

    Post-herpetic neuralgia is the most challenging and debilitating complication of herpes zoster in the immunocompetent host. Because the effect of treatment is disappointing once the syndrome has developed, it is important to know which factors predict post-herpetic neuralgia occurrence to facilitate selection of herpes zoster patients with a higher risk of developing neuralgia and undertake preventative strategies. The present study aimed at identifying demographic, clinical and psychosocial correlates of post-herpetic neuralgia in a sample of 219 immunocompetent patients, who were examined by dermatologists in private practice in Italy and who completed a questionnaire designed to evaluate their clinical and psychosocial profile at the time of clinical diagnosis of herpes zoster and at a follow-up visit 6 months later. In a univariate analysis, post-herpetic neuralgia was associated significantly with older age, longer duration of prodromal pain, greater acute pain intensity, greater extent of rash, presence of abnormal sensations and use of systemic antiviral therapy. Compared to the values at herpes zoster onset, at the follow-up visit patients with post-herpetic neuralgia presented with similar high mean scores of pain intensity, anxiety and depression and greatly reduced quality of life, whereas patients without neuralgia presented with improved scores. In a multivariate model, older age, greater acute pain intensity, greater extent of rash and longer duration of prodromal pain were independently associated with post-herpetic neuralgia. The results of this study may help physicians to identify patients with a higher risk of developing post-herpetic neuralgia and undertaking preventative strategies

    Effects of compost-bedded pack barn on circulating cortisol and beta-endorphins in dairy cows: A case study

    SIMPLE SUMMARY: Management and housing conditions have been reported to significantly affect the health and welfare of livestock species. Therefore, the adoption of novel, alternative housing systems (such as the compost-bedded pack barn, developed in the USA) requires extensive research to assess the implications for animal welfare. From a general point of view, animal welfare is typically assessed by means of animal-based (such as blood biochemical markers) and resource-based (such as management practices) indicators. Based on such considerations, the present study evaluated the fluctuation of circulating cortisol and beta-endorphins in dairy cows housed in a conventional freestall barn (FB) and in the alternative compost-bedded pack barn (CB). The results obtained suggest that the CB housing system did not elicit significant changes in either blood cortisol or beta-endorphins. ABSTRACT: The up-to-date literature suggests that the compost-bedded pack barn housing system is capable of remarkably improving productive and reproductive performance, as well as health status and welfare, in dairy cattle. However, there is currently limited knowledge available on the endocrine and biochemical changes in animals housed in such alternative systems. Therefore, this study aimed to measure blood cortisol (COR) and beta-endorphins (BE) in 22 two-year-old primiparae Fleckvieh cows, who were randomly allotted to the following two different housing systems: CB (n = 11) and FB (n = 11). Blood samples were collected at the beginning of the experiment (T0) and every two months thereafter (T1, T2, and T3). The COR and BE were measured through an immunoenzymatic kit. With the only exception being T0, no differences were observed over time between the two groups, neither for COR nor for BE. However, the blood cortisol levels of the CB cows decreased over time, while a T1 peak was identified in the FB group. On the contrary, both the housing systems displayed numerically higher BE at T3 than at the other experimental times. Therefore, the overall data suggest that the compost-bedded pack barn did not significantly affect the studied parameters. Accordingly, cow welfare should be assessed using a wider panel of animal-based indicators

Questo corpo gigantesco, paragonato da Tyler Volk a un sistema fisiologico , fu chiamato Gaia da James Lovelock, su suggerimento di William Golding, premio nobel per la letteratura. Come spiega lo stesso Lovelock, questo nome è una metafora che rappresenta la Terra vivente. Difatti, Gaia (o Gea), dea greca della Terra, significa “pianeta vivente” e rappresenta bene l’idea di questo sistema vivo ed “intelligente” che respira e si evolve

    A time-varying inertia pendulum: Analytical modelling and experimental identification

    In this paper two of the main sources of non-stationary dynamics, namely the time-variability and the presence of nonlinearity, are analysed through the analytical and experimental study of a time-varying inertia pendulum. The pendulum undergoes large swinging amplitudes, so that its equation of motion is definitely nonlinear, and hence becomes a nonlinear time-varying system. The analysis is carried out through two subspace-based techniques for the identification of both the linear time-varying system and the nonlinear system. The flexural and the nonlinear swinging motions of the pendulum are uncoupled and are considered separately: for each of them an analytical model is built for comparisons and the identification procedures are developed. The results demonstrate that a good agreement between the predicted and the identified frequencies can be achieved, for both the considered motions.     Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid from cattle with central nervous system disorders after storage for 24 hours with autologous serum

    BACKGROUND: We compared the changes in cell morphology, total and differential cell counts between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples analyzed within an hour of collection (fresh sample) and after the addition of autologous serum and storage for 24 h (stored sample) in 27 cattle with central nervous system disorders. RESULTS: There was a positive linear correlation between total and differential cell counts in the fresh and the stored samples. Cell morphology was preserved in all stored samples, except for increased vacuolization of mononuclear cells and cleaved nuclei of some small mononuclear cells. In the stored CSF samples, the total nucleated cell count and monocyte percentage were decreased (P = 0.01; P = 0.03), while the lymphocyte percentage was increased (P = 0.04). Mononuclear pleocytosis diagnosed in 20 fresh samples was cytologically confirmed in 12 of the 20 stored samples. In the remaining eight stored samples, the number of total nucleated cells was within the normal range. Neutrophilic pleocytosis was confirmed in all seven stored samples. The overall agreement rate between cytologic interpretation of the fresh and the stored CSF samples was 70 % (100 % for neutrophilic pleocytosis and 60 % for mononuclear pleocytosis). CONCLUSIONS: Adding 11 % of autologous serum to CSF samples might allow delayed analysis with a good agreement rate for CSF cytological interpretation. Caution is nonetheless warranted, as animal age, anamnesis, and neurological presentation need to be considered when interpreting stored CSF without pleocytosis.
