IQ and Blood Lead from 2 to 7 Years of Age: Are the Effects in Older Children the Residual of High Blood Lead Concentrations in 2-Year-Olds?
Increases in peak blood lead concentrations, which occur at 18–30 months of age in the United States, are thought to result in lower IQ scores at 4–6 years of age, when IQ becomes stable and measurable. Data from a prospective study conducted in Boston suggested that blood lead concentrations at 2 years of age were more predictive of cognitive deficits in older children than were later blood lead concentrations or blood lead concentrations measured concurrently with IQ. Therefore, cross-sectional associations between blood lead and IQ in school-age children have been widely interpreted as the residual effects of higher blood lead concentrations at an earlier age or the tendency of less intelligent children to ingest more leaded dust or paint chips, rather than as a causal relationship in older children. Here we analyze data from a clinical trial in which children were treated for elevated blood lead concentrations (20–44 μg/dL) at about 2 years of age and followed until 7 years of age with serial IQ tests and measurements of blood lead. We found that cross-sectional associations increased in strength as the children became older, whereas the relation between baseline blood lead and IQ attenuated. Peak blood lead level thus does not fully account for the observed association in older children between their lower blood lead concentrations and IQ. The effect of concurrent blood level on IQ may therefore be greater than currently believed
Inverse analysis of asteroseismic data: a review
Asteroseismology has emerged as the best way to characterize the global and
internal properties of nearby stars. Often, this characterization is achieved
by fitting stellar evolution models to asteroseismic observations. The star
under investigation is then assumed to have the properties of the best-fitting
model, such as its age. However, the models do not fit the observations
perfectly. This is due to incorrect or missing physics in stellar evolution
calculations, resulting in predicted stellar structures that are discrepant
with reality. Through an inverse analysis of the asteroseismic data, it is
possible to go further than fitting stellar models, and instead infer details
about the actual internal structure of the star at some locations in its
interior. Comparing theoretical and observed stellar structures then enables
the determination of the locations where the stellar models have discrepant
structure, and illuminates a path for improvements to our understanding of
stellar evolution. In this invited review, we describe the methods of
asteroseismic inversions, and outline the progress that is being made towards

Low-Level Environmental Lead Exposure and Children’s Intellectual Function: An International Pooled Analysis
Lead is a confirmed neurotoxin, but questions remain about lead-associated intellectual deficits at blood lead levels < 10 μg/dL and whether lower exposures are, for a given change in exposure, associated with greater deficits. The objective of this study was to examine the association of intelligence test scores and blood lead concentration, especially for children who had maximal measured blood lead levels < 10 μg/dL. We examined data collected from 1,333 children who participated in seven international population-based longitudinal cohort studies, followed from birth or infancy until 5–10 years of age. The full-scale IQ score was the primary outcome measure. The geometric mean blood lead concentration of the children peaked at 17.8 μg/dL and declined to 9.4 μg/dL by 5–7 years of age; 244 (18%) children had a maximal blood lead concentration < 10 μg/dL, and 103 (8%) had a maximal blood lead concentration < 7.5 μg/dL. After adjustment for covariates, we found an inverse relationship between blood lead concentration and IQ score. Using a log-linear model, we found a 6.9 IQ point decrement [95% confidence interval (CI), 4.2–9.4] associated with an increase in concurrent blood lead levels from 2.4 to 30 μg/dL. The estimated IQ point decrements associated with an increase in blood lead from 2.4 to 10 μg/dL, 10 to 20 μg/dL, and 20 to 30 μg/dL were 3.9 (95% CI, 2.4–5.3), 1.9 (95% CI, 1.2–2.6), and 1.1 (95% CI, 0.7–1.5), respectively. For a given increase in blood lead, the lead-associated intellectual decrement for children with a maximal blood lead level < 7.5 μg/dL was significantly greater than that observed for those with a maximal blood lead level ≥7.5 μg/dL (p = 0.015). We conclude that environmental lead exposure in children who have maximal blood lead levels < 7.5 μg/dL is associated with intellectual deficits
The practices of apartheid as a war crime: a critical analysis
The human suffering caused by the political ideology of apartheid in South Africa during the Apartheid era (1948-1994) prompted worldwide condemnation and a variety of diplomatic and legal responses. Amongst these responses was the attempt to have apartheid recognised both as a crime against humanity in the 1973 Apartheid Convention as well as a war crime in Article 85(4)(c) of Additional Protocol I. This article examines the origins, nature and current status of the practices of apartheid as a war crime and its possible application to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
Asteroseismology of red giants & galactic archaeology
Red-giant stars are low- to intermediate-mass (~M)
stars that have exhausted hydrogen in the core. These extended, cool and hence
red stars are key targets for stellar evolution studies as well as galactic
studies for several reasons: a) many stars go through a red-giant phase; b) red
giants are intrinsically bright; c) large stellar internal structure changes as
well as changes in surface chemical abundances take place over relatively short
time; d) red-giant stars exhibit global intrinsic oscillations. Due to their
large number and intrinsic brightness it is possible to observe many of these
stars up to large distances. Furthermore, the global intrinsic oscillations
provide a means to discern red-giant stars in the pre-helium core burning from
the ones in the helium core burning phase and provide an estimate of stellar
ages, a key ingredient for galactic studies. In this lecture I will first
discuss some physical phenomena that play a role in red-giant stars and several
phases of red-giant evolution. Then, I will provide some details about
asteroseismology -- the study of the internal structure of stars through their
intrinsic oscillations -- of red-giant stars. I will conclude by discussing
galactic archaeology -- the study of the formation and evolution of the Milky
Way by reconstructing its past from its current constituents -- and the role

Biodiversity of the Collembola Fauna of Wetland Kerkini (N. Greece), with description of the sexual dimorphism of Entomobrya atrocincta Schött 1896 (Collembola: Entomobryomorpha)
A report on the results of a research into some aspects of the collembolan fauna of the
Greek Nature Reserve associated with Lake Kerkini, known as Wetland Kerkini, is presented. The
nature reserve is large and includes a wide variety of habitats, many of which were not included in
this preliminary survey. From the areas sampled we recorded 44 species, of which 39 were previously
described, two (Folsomia potapovi Jordana & Baquero n. sp., Entomobrya naziridisi Jordana & Baquero
n. sp.), are new to science, while three are identifi ed to generic level; a further 21 are new records for
Greece, and an additional 11 species are new records to the Greek Mainland. Sampling with Berlese-
Tullgren funnels and Malaise traps allowed us to capture species typical of soil and species present
over vegetation. This summary is based on the records held in the online database of the Fauna
Europaea Project
Measurement of Dijet Angular Distributions at CDF
We have used 106 pb^-1 of data collected in proton-antiproton collisions at
sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV by the Collider Detector at Fermilab to measure jet angular
distributions in events with two jets in the final state. The angular
distributions agree with next to leading order (NLO) predictions of Quantum
Chromodynamics (QCD) in all dijet invariant mass regions. The data exclude at
95% confidence level (CL) a model of quark substructure in which only up and
down quarks are composite and the contact interaction scale is Lambda_ud(+) <
1.6 TeV or Lambda_ud(-) < 1.4 TeV. For a model in which all quarks are
composite the excluded regions are Lambda(+) < 1.8 TeV and Lambda(-) < 1. 6

Search for charged Higgs decays of the top quark using hadronic tau decays
We present the result of a search for charged Higgs decays of the top quark,
produced in collisions at 1.8 TeV. When the charged
Higgs is heavy and decays to a tau lepton, which subsequently decays
hadronically, the resulting events have a unique signature: large missing
transverse energy and the low-charged-multiplicity tau. Data collected in the
period 1992-1993 at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, corresponding to
18.70.7~pb, exclude new regions of combined top quark and charged
Higgs mass, in extensions to the standard model with two Higgs doublets.Comment: uuencoded, gzipped tar file of LaTeX and 6 Postscript figures; 11 pp;

Inclusive jet cross section in collisions at TeV
The inclusive jet differential cross section has been measured for jet
transverse energies, , from 15 to 440 GeV, in the pseudorapidity region
0.10.7. The results are based on 19.5 pb of data
collected by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data
are compared with QCD predictions for various sets of parton distribution
functions. The cross section for jets with GeV is significantly
higher than current predictions based on O() perturbative QCD
calculations. Various possible explanations for the high- excess are

Search for New Particles Decaying to Dijets at CDF
We have used 106 pb^-1 of data collected with the Collider Detector at
Fermilab to search for new particles decaying to dijets. We exclude at the 95%
confidence level models containing the following new particles: axigluons and
flavor universal colorons with mass between 200 and 980 GeV/c, excited quarks
with mass between 80 and 570 GeV/c^2 and between 580 and 760 GeV/c^2, color
octet technirhos with mass between 260 and 480 GeV/c^2, W' bosons with mass
between 300 and 420 GeV/c^2, and E_6 diquarks with mass between 290 and 420
