Statistics of resonance width shifts as a signature of eigenfunction non-orthogonality
We consider an open (scattering) quantum system under the action of a
perturbation of its closed counterpart. It is demonstrated that the resulting
shift of resonance widths is a sensitive indicator of the non-orthogonality of
resonance wavefunctions, being zero only if those were orthogonal. Focusing
further on chaotic systems, we employ random matrix theory to introduce a new
type of parametric statistics in open systems, and derive the distribution of
the resonance width shifts in the regime of weak coupling to the continuum.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure (published version with minor changes
Polyimide adhesives
A process was developed for preparing aromatic polyamide acids for use as adhesives by reacting an aromatic dianhydride to an approximately equimolar amount of an aromatic diamine in a water or lower alkanol miscible ether solvent. The polyamide acids are converted to polyimides by heating to the temperature range of 200 - 300 C. The polyimides are thermally stable and insoluble in ethers and other organic solvents
The Nearest Group of Galaxies
The small Antlia-Sextans clustering of galaxies is located at a distance of
only 1.36 Mpc from the Sun, and 1.72 Mpc from the adopted barycenter of the
Local Group. The latter value is significantly greater than the radius of the
zero- velocity surface of the Local Group which, for an assumed age of 14 Gyr,
has Ro = 1.18 " 0.15 Mpc. This, together with the observation that the members
of the Ant-Sex group have a mean redshift of +114 " 12 km s-1 relative to the
centroid of the Local Group, suggests that the Antlia-Sextans group is not
bound to our Local Group, and that it is expanding with the Hubble flow. If
this conclusion is correct, then Antlia-Sextans may be the nearest external
clustering of galaxies. The total galaxian population of the Ant-Sex group is ~
1/5 that of the Local Group. However, the integrated luminosity of Ant-Sex is
two orders of magnitude lower than that of the Local Group.

Race and “Hotspots” of Preventable Hospitalizations
Abstract
Preventable hospitalizations (PHs) are those for ambulatory care-sensitive conditions that indicate insufficiencies in local primary healthcare. PH rates tend to be higher among African Americans, in urban centers, rural areas and areas with more African American residents. The objective of this study is to determine geographic clusters of high PH rates (“spatial clusters”) by race. Data from Maryland hospitals were utilized to determine the rates of PHs in zip code tabulation areas (ZCTAs) by race in 2010. Geographic clusters of ZCTAs with higher than expected PH rates were identified using Scan Statistic and Anselin’s Local Moran’s I. 10 PH spatial clusters were observed among the total population with an average PH rate of 3,046.6 per 100,000 population. Among whites, the average PH rate was 3,339.9 per 100,000 in 11 PH spatial clusters. Only five PH spatial clusters were observed among African Americans with a higher average PH rate (3,710.8 per 100,000). The locations and other characteristics of PH spatial clusters differed by race. These results can be used to target resources to areas with high PH rates. Because PH spatial clusters are observed in differing locations for African Americans, approaches that include cultural tailoring may need to be specifically targeted
Bell's Theorem and Nonlinear Systems
For all Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-type experiments on deterministic systems the
Bell inequality holds, unless non-local interactions exist between certain
parts of the setup. Here we show that in nonlinear systems the Bell inequality
can be violated by non-local effects that are arbitrarily weak. Then we show
that the quantum result of the existing Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-type
experiments can be reproduced within deterministic models that include

Partial separability and entanglement criteria for multiqubit quantum states
We explore the subtle relationships between partial separability and
entanglement of subsystems in multiqubit quantum states and give experimentally
accessible conditions that distinguish between various classes and levels of
partial separability in a hierarchical order. These conditions take the form of
bounds on the correlations of locally orthogonal observables. Violations of
such inequalities give strong sufficient criteria for various forms of partial
inseparability and multiqubit entanglement. The strength of these criteria is
illustrated by showing that they are stronger than several other well-known
entanglement criteria (the fidelity criterion, violation of Mermin-type
separability inequalities, the Laskowski-\.Zukowski criterion and the
D\"ur-Cirac criterion), and also by showing their great noise robustness for a
variety of multiqubit states, including N-qubit GHZ states and Dicke states.
Furthermore, for N greater than or equal to 3 they can detect bound entangled
states. For all these states, the required number of measurement settings for
implementation of the entanglement criteria is shown to be only N+1. If one
chooses the familiar Pauli matrices as single-qubit observables, the
inequalities take the form of bounds on the anti-diagonal matrix elements of a

Flux-flow induced giant magnetoresistance in all-amorphous superconductor-ferromagnet hybrids
We present magnetoresistance measurements on all-amorphous ferromagnet (F) /
superconductor (S) heterostructures. The F/S/F trilayers show large
magnetoresistance peaks in a small field range around the coercive field of the
F layers, at temperatures within and below the superconducting transition. This
is interpreted as flux flow of weakly pinned vortices induced by the stray
field of Bloch magnetic domains in the F layers. Bilayers show much smaller
effects, implying that the Bloch walls of the F-layers in the trilayer line up
and focus the stray fields. The data are used to discuss the expected minimum
F-layer thickness needed to nucleate vortices.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Polyimide adhesives

An equimolar quantity of an aromatic dianhydride is added to a stirred solution of an aromatic diamine in a water or alcohol-miscible ether solvent to obtain a viscous polymer solution. The polymeric-acid intermediate polymer does not become insoluble but directly forms a smooth viscous polymer solution. These polyamic-acid polymers are converted, by heating in the range of 200-300 C and with pressure, to form polyimides with excellent adhesive properties
The Identity Correspondence Problem and its Applications
In this paper we study several closely related fundamental problems for words
and matrices. First, we introduce the Identity Correspondence Problem (ICP):
whether a finite set of pairs of words (over a group alphabet) can generate an
identity pair by a sequence of concatenations. We prove that ICP is undecidable
by a reduction of Post's Correspondence Problem via several new encoding
techniques.
In the second part of the paper we use ICP to answer a long standing open
problem concerning matrix semigroups: "Is it decidable for a finitely generated
semigroup S of square integral matrices whether or not the identity matrix
belongs to S?". We show that the problem is undecidable starting from dimension
four even when the number of matrices in the generator is 48. From this fact,
we can immediately derive that the fundamental problem of whether a finite set
of matrices generates a group is also undecidable. We also answer several
question for matrices over different number fields. Apart from the application
to matrix problems, we believe that the Identity Correspondence Problem will
also be useful in identifying new areas of undecidable problems in abstract
algebra, computational questions in logic and combinatorics on words.Comment: We have made some proofs clearer and fixed an important typo from the
