Stoichiometry control of the electronic properties of the LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3 heterointerface
We investigate the effect of the laser parameters of pulsed laser deposition
on the film stoichiometry and electronic properties of LaAlO_3/SrTiO_3 (001)
heterostructures. The La/Al ratio in the LaAlO_3 films was varied over a wide
range from 0.88 to 1.15, and was found to have a strong effect on the interface
conductivity. In particular, the carrier density is modulated over more than
two orders of magnitude. The film lattice expansion, caused by cation
vacancies, is found to be the important functional parameter. These results can
be understood to arise from the variations in the electrostatic boundary
conditions, and their resolution, with stoichiometry.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted for publicatio
Construction of optimal witness for unknown two-qubit entanglement
Whether entanglement in a state can be detected, distilled, and quantified
without full state reconstruction is a fundamental open problem. We demonstrate
a new scheme encompassing these three tasks for arbitrary two-qubit
entanglement, by constructing the optimal entanglement witness for
polarization-entangled mixed-state photon pairs without full state
reconstruction. With better efficiency than quantum state tomography, the
entanglement is maximally distilled by newly developed tunable polarization
filters, and quantified by the expectation value of the witness, which equals
the concurrence. This scheme is extendible to multiqubit

Evaluation of a FTIR Emission Measurement System for Legislated Emissions Using a SI Car
A series of chassis dynamometer test trials were
conducted to assess the performance of a Fourier
Transform Infra Red (FTIR) system developed for
on-road vehicle exhaust emissions measurements.
Trials used a EURO 1 emission compliant SI passenger
car which, alongside the FTIR, was instrumented to
allow the routine logging of engine speed, road speed,
throttle position, air-fuel ratio, air flow and fuel flow in
addition to engine, exhaust and catalyst temperatures.
The chassis dynamometer facility incorporated an
‘industry standard’ measurement system comprising
MEXA7400 gas analyzer and CVS bag sampling which
was the ‘benchmark’ for the evaluation of FTIR
legislated gas-phase emissions (CO, NOx, THC and
CO2) measurements.
Initial steady state measurements demonstrated strong
correlations for CO, NOx and THC (R2 of 0.99, 0.97
0.99, respectively) and a good correlation for CO2 (R2 =
0.92). Subsequent transient and total mass emissions
measurements from replicate samplings of four different
driving cycles (two standard cycles, FTP75 and NEDC,
and two novel cycles based on real-world data collected
in Leeds) also show good response of FTIR and
satisfied agreement between the FTIR and CVS bag
sampling measurements.
In general, the trial results demonstrate that the
on-board FTIR emission measurement system provides
reliable in-journey emissions data
Visual Search for Galaxies near the Northern Crossing of the Supergalactic plane by the Milky Way
We have visually examined twelve Palomar red Plates for galaxies at low
Galactic latitude b, where the Supergalactic Plane (SGP) is crossed by the
Galactic Plane (GP), at Galactic longitude l ~135 degrees. The catalogue
consists of 2575 galaxy candidates, of which 462 have major axis diameters d >=
0.8 arc min (uncorrected for extinction). Galaxy candidates can be identified
down to |b| ~ 0 degrees. One of our galaxy candidates (J24 = Dwingeloo 1) has
recently been discovered independently in 21cm by Kraan-Korteweg et al. (1994)
as a nearby galaxy. Comparisons with the structures seen in the IRAS and UGC
catalogues are made. We compare the success rate of identifying galaxies using
the IRAS Point Source Catalogue under different colour selection criteria. The
criteria that require both the 60 micron and 100 micron fluxes to be of high
quality, have the highest probability of selecting a galaxy (with d >= 0.6 arc
min), but at the expense of selecting a smaller number of galaxies in total.Comment: uuencoded compressed postscript, without figures. The figures are

Possible Experience: from Boole to Bell
Mainstream interpretations of quantum theory maintain that violations of the
Bell inequalities deny at least either realism or Einstein locality. Here we
investigate the premises of the Bell-type inequalities by returning to earlier
inequalities presented by Boole and the findings of Vorob'ev as related to
these inequalities. These findings together with a space-time generalization of
Boole's elements of logic lead us to a completely transparent Einstein local
counterexample from everyday life that violates certain variations of the Bell
inequalities. We show that the counterexample suggests an interpretation of the
Born rule as a pre-measure of probability that can be transformed into a
Kolmogorov probability measure by certain Einstein local space-time

Nonlocality of Two-Mode Squeezing with Internal Noise
We examine the quantum states produced through parametric amplification with
internal quantum noise. The internal diffusion arises by coupling both modes of
light to a reservoir for the duration of the interaction time. The Wigner
function for the diffused two-mode squeezed state is calculated. The
nonlocality, separability, and purity of these quantum states of light are
discussed. In addition, we conclude by studying the nonlocality of two other
continuous variable states: the Werner state and the phase-diffused state for

Hidden assumptions in the derivation of the Theorem of Bell
John Bell's inequalities have already been considered by Boole in 1862. Boole
established a one-to-one correspondence between experimental outcomes and
mathematical abstractions of his probability theory. His abstractions are
two-valued functions that permit the logical operations AND, OR and NOT and are
the elements of an algebra. Violation of the inequalities indicated to Boole an
inconsistency of definition of the abstractions and/or the necessity to revise
the algebra. It is demonstrated in this paper, that a violation of Bell's
inequality by Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen type of experiments can be explained by
Boole's ideas. Violations of Bell's inequality also call for a revision of the
mathematical abstractions and corresponding algebra. It will be shown that this
particular view of Bell's inequalities points toward an incompleteness of
quantum mechanics, rather than to any superluminal propagation or influences at
a distance
Impact of Driving Cycles on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions, Global Warming Potential (GWP) and Fuel Economy for SI Car Real World Driving
The transport sector is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. This study investigated three greenhouse gases emitted from road transport: CO2, N2O and CH4 emissions as a function of engine warm up and driving cycles. Five different urban driving cycles were developed and used including free flow driving and congested driving. An in-vehicle FTIR (Fourier Transform Inferred) emission measurement system was installed on a EURO2 emission compliant SI (Spark Ignition) car for emissions measurement at a rate of 0.5 HZ under real world urban driving conditions. This emission measurement system was calibrated on a standard CVS (Constant Volume Sampling) measurement system and showed excellent agreement on CO2 measurement with CVS results. The N2O and CH4 measurement was calibrated using calibration gas in lab. A MAX710 real time in-vehicle fuel consumption measurement system was installed in the test vehicle and real time fuel consumption was then obtained. The temperatures across the TWC (Three Way Catalyst) and engine out exhaust gas lambda were measured. The GHG (greenhouse gas) mass emissions and consequent GWP (Global Warming Potential) for different urban diving conditions were analyzed and presented. The results provided a better understanding of traffic related greenhouse gas emission profile in urban area and will contribute to the control of climate change
Implementation of the 64-meter-diameter Antennas at the Deep Space Stations in Australia and Spain
The management and construction aspects of the Overseas 64-m Antenna Project in which two 64-m antennas were constructed at the Tidbinbilla Deep Space Communications Complex in Australia, and at the Madrid Deep Space Communications Complex in Spain are described. With the completion of these antennas the Deep Space Network is equipped with three 64-m antennas spaced around the world to maintain continuous coverage of spacecraft operations. These antennas provide approximately a 7-db gain over the capabilities of the existing 26-m antenna nets. The report outlines the project organization and management, resource utilization, fabrication, quality assurance, and construction methods by which the project was successfully completed. Major problems and their solutions are described as well as recommendations for future projects
Scanning SQUID Susceptometry of a paramagnetic superconductor
Scanning SQUID susceptometry images the local magnetization and
susceptibility of a sample. By accurately modeling the SQUID signal we can
determine the physical properties such as the penetration depth and
permeability of superconducting samples. We calculate the scanning SQUID
susceptometry signal for a superconducting slab of arbitrary thickness with
isotropic London penetration depth, on a non-superconducting substrate, where
both slab and substrate can have a paramagnetic response that is linear in the
applied field. We derive analytical approximations to our general expression in
a number of limits. Using our results, we fit experimental susceptibility data
as a function of the sample-sensor spacing for three samples: 1) delta-doped
SrTiO3, which has a predominantly diamagnetic response, 2) a thin film of
LaNiO3, which has a predominantly paramagnetic response, and 3) a
two-dimensional electron layer (2-DEL) at a SrTiO3/AlAlO3 interface, which
exhibits both types of response. These formulas will allow the determination of
the concentrations of paramagnetic spins and superconducting carriers from fits
to scanning SQUID susceptibility measurements.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figure
