    Quantitying the Effects of Traffic Calming on Emissions Using on-road Measurement

    The objective of this work was to determine the effect of one form of traffic calming on emissions. Traffic calming is aimed at reducing average vehicle speeds, especially in residential neighborhoods, often using physical road obstructions such as speed bumps, but it also results in a higher number of acceleration/deceleration events which in turn yield higher emissions. Testing was undertaken by driving a warmed-up Euro-1 spark ignition passenger car over a set of speed bumps on a level road, and then comparing the emissions output to a noncalmed level road negotiated smoothly at a similar average speed. For the emissions measurements, a novel method was utilized, whereby the vehicle was fitted with a portable Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, capable of measuring up to 51 different components in real-time on the road. The results showed that increases in emissions were much greater than was previously reported by other researchers using different techniques. When traffic-calmed results were compared to a smooth non-calmed road, there were substantial increases in CO2 (90%), CO (117%), NOx (195%) and THC (148%). These results form the basis for a good argument against traffic calming using speed bumps, especially for aggressive drivers. Slowing traffic down with speed restrictions enforced by speed cameras is a more environmentally friendly option

    Evaluation of a FTIR Emission Measurement System for Legislated Emissions Using a SI Car

    A series of chassis dynamometer test trials were conducted to assess the performance of a Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) system developed for on-road vehicle exhaust emissions measurements. Trials used a EURO 1 emission compliant SI passenger car which, alongside the FTIR, was instrumented to allow the routine logging of engine speed, road speed, throttle position, air-fuel ratio, air flow and fuel flow in addition to engine, exhaust and catalyst temperatures. The chassis dynamometer facility incorporated an ‘industry standard’ measurement system comprising MEXA7400 gas analyzer and CVS bag sampling which was the ‘benchmark’ for the evaluation of FTIR legislated gas-phase emissions (CO, NOx, THC and CO2) measurements. Initial steady state measurements demonstrated strong correlations for CO, NOx and THC (R2 of 0.99, 0.97 0.99, respectively) and a good correlation for CO2 (R2 = 0.92). Subsequent transient and total mass emissions measurements from replicate samplings of four different driving cycles (two standard cycles, FTP75 and NEDC, and two novel cycles based on real-world data collected in Leeds) also show good response of FTIR and satisfied agreement between the FTIR and CVS bag sampling measurements. In general, the trial results demonstrate that the on-board FTIR emission measurement system provides reliable in-journey emissions data

    The Effect of Ambient Temperature on Cold Start Urban Traffic Emissions for a Real World SI Car

    The influence of ambient temperature on exhaust emissions for an instrumented Euro 1 SI car was determined. A real world test cycle was used, based on an urban drive cycle that was similar to the ECE urban drive cycle. It was based on four laps of a street circuit and an emissions sample bag was taken for each lap. The bag for the first lap was for the cold start emissions. An in-vehicle direct exhaust dual bag sampling technique was used to simultaneously collect exhaust samples upstream and downstream of the three-way catalyst (TWC). The cold start tests were conducted over a year, with ambient temperatures ranging from – 2°C to 32°C. The exhaust system was instrumented with thermocouples so that the catalyst light off temperature could be determined. The results showed that CO emissions for the cold start were reduced by a factor of 8 downstream of catalyst when ambient temperature rose from -2°C to 32°C, the corresponding hydrocarbon emissions were reduced by a factor of 4. There was no clear relationship between NOx emissions and ambient temperature. For subsequent laps of the test circuit the reduction of CO and HC emissions as a function of ambient temperature was lower. The time for catalyst light off increased by 50% as the ambient temperature was reduced. The results show that the vehicle used is unlikely to meet the new – 7oC cold start CO emission regulations

    Nutritional quality of silver beet and tomatoes grown in secondary treated wastewater

    With decrease rainfall in parts of the world, increase in population and an increase in demand for fresh foods, water conservation is becoming one of the biggest challenges today. A possible solution to this is wastewater reuse. However, one of the biggest challenges with wastewater reuse in food production is the uncertainty of the nutritional quality of produce. Combining the hydroponics method of growing edible food crops while using secondary treated domestic wastewater requires less space than traditional agricultural methods. This also aids in water conservation by reusing the treated effluent. The nutritional quality of tomatoes and silver beet growing in secondary treated domestic wastewater were compared to those grown in a commercially available hydroponics solution, as well as, produce purchased from a local supermarket. The tomatoes and silver beet were analysed for total caroteniods, total soluble solids and ascorbic acid concentrations.     Late Quaternary Relative Sea-Level Change on the West Coast of Newfoundland

    Two revised relative sea-level (RSL) curves are presented for the Port au Choix to Daniel’s Harbour area of the Great Northern Peninsula, northwestern Newfoundland. Both curves are similar, showing continuous emergence of 120-140 m between 14 700 cal BP and present. The half-life of exponential curves fit to the RSL data is 1400 years and the rate of emergence varies from ~2.3 m per century prior to 10 000 cal BP to ~0.13 m per century since 5000 cal BP. The curves fit a general pattern of RSL history along the west coast of Newfoundland, where there is a southward transition from solely emergence to emergence followed by submergence. Isostatic depression curves are generated for four RSL records spanning the west coast. Almost double the crustal depression is recorded to the northwest, reflecting the greater glacioisostatic loading by the Laurentide Ice Sheet over southern Labrador and Québec compared to a smaller loading centre by a regional ice complex over Newfoundland. Only the St. George’s Bay RSL record in the southwest appears to show evidence for a proglacial forebulge, when at 6000 cal BP an isostatic ridge of 4 m amplitude begins to collapse.Deux courbes du niveau marin relatif (NMR) sont présentées pour la région allant de Port-au-Choix à Daniel’s Harbour sur la Grande Péninsule Nord, au nord-ouest de Terre-Neuve. Les courbes s’ajustent au modèle général de l’histoire du NMR de la côte ouest de Terre-Neuve, où il existe une transition d’émergence seule à une émergence suivie d’une submergence, en allant vers le sud. Des courbes de dépressions isostatiques préliminaires sont générées pour quatre chronologies du NMR couvrant la côte ouest. Presque le double de la dépression de la croûte est enregistré au nord-ouest, reflétant la charge glacio-isostatique plus grande de l’Inlandsis Laurentidien sur le sud du Labrador et du Québec comparée à la charge plus faible du complexe glaciaire régional localisé sur Terre-Neuve. Seules les données du NMR de St. George’s Bay, au sud-ouest, semble démontrer l’affaissement du bourrelet périphérique lorsqu’une vague isostatique de 4 m d’amplitude commence à s’effondrer vers 6000 cal BP

    A real Lorentz-FitzGerald contraction

    Many condensed matter systems are such that their collective excitations at low energies can be described by fields satisfying equations of motion formally indistinguishable from those of relativistic field theory. The finite speed of propagation of the disturbances in the effective fields (in the simplest models, the speed of sound) plays here the role of the speed of light in fundamental physics. However, these apparently relativistic fields are immersed in an external Newtonian world (the condensed matter system itself and the laboratory can be considered Newtonian, since all the velocities involved are much smaller than the velocity of light) which provides a privileged coordinate system and therefore seems to destroy the possibility of having a perfectly defined relativistic emergent world. In this essay we ask ourselves the following question: In a homogeneous condensed matter medium, is there a way for internal observers, dealing exclusively with the low-energy collective phenomena, to detect their state of uniform motion with respect to the medium? By proposing a thought experiment based on the construction of a Michelson-Morley interferometer made of quasi-particles, we show that a real Lorentz-FitzGerald contraction takes place, so that internal observers are unable to find out anything about their `absolute ' state of motion. Therefore, we also show that an effective but perfectly defined relativistic world can emerge in a fishbowl world situated inside a Newtonian (laboratory) system. This leads us to reflect on the various levels of description in physics, in particular regarding the quest towards a theory of quantum gravity.Comment: 6 pages, no figures.     Infinitesimals without Logic

    We introduce the ring of Fermat reals, an extension of the real field containing nilpotent infinitesimals. The construction takes inspiration from Smooth Infinitesimal Analysis (SIA), but provides a powerful theory of actual infinitesimals without any need of a background in mathematical logic. In particular, on the contrary with respect to SIA, which admits models only in intuitionistic logic, the theory of Fermat reals is consistent with classical logic. We face the problem to decide if the product of powers of nilpotent infinitesimals is zero or not, the identity principle for polynomials, the definition and properties of the total order relation. The construction is highly constructive, and every Fermat real admits a clear and order preserving geometrical representation. Using nilpotent infinitesimals, every smooth functions becomes a polynomial because in Taylor's formulas the rest is now zero. Finally, we present several applications to informal classical calculations used in Physics: now all these calculations become rigorous and, at the same time, formally equal to the informal ones.     Cosmology, Particle Physics and Superfluid 3He

    Many direct parallels connect superfluid 3He with the field theories describing the physical vacuum, gauge fields and elementary fermions. Superfluid 3^3He exhibits a variety of topological defects which can be detected with single-defect sensitivity. Modern scenarios of defect-mediated baryogenesis can be simulated by the interaction of the 3He vortices and domain walls with fermionic quasiparticles. Formation of defects in a symmetry-breaking phase transition in the early Universe, which could be responsible for large-scale structure formation and for microwave-background anisotropy, also may be modelled in the laboratory.     Rapid-response radio observations of short GRB 181123B with the Australia Telescope Compact Array

    We introduce the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) rapid-response mode by presenting the first successful trigger on the short-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) 181123B. Early-time radio observations of short GRBs may provide vital insights into the radio afterglow properties of Advanced LIGO- and Virgo-detected gravitational wave events, which will in turn inform follow-up strategies to search for counterparts within their large positional uncertainties. The ATCA was on target within 12.6 hr post-burst, when the source had risen above the horizon. While no radio afterglow was detected during the 8.3 hr observation, we obtained force-fitted flux densities of 7±127 \pm 12 and 15±11 μ15 \pm 11~\muJy at 5.5 and 9 GHz, respectively. Afterglow modelling of GRB 181123B showed that the addition of the ATCA force-fitted radio flux densities to the Swift X-ray Telescope detections provided more stringent constraints on the fraction of thermal energy in the electrons (logϵe=−0.75−0.40+0.39\epsilon_e = -0.75^{+0.39}_{-0.40} rather than logϵe=−1.13−1.2+0.82\epsilon_e = -1.13^{+0.82}_{-1.2} derived without the inclusion of the ATCA values), which is consistent with the range of typical ϵe\epsilon_e derived from GRB afterglow modelling. This allowed us to predict that the forward shock may have peaked in the radio band ∼10\sim10 days post-burst, producing detectable radio emission ≳3−4\gtrsim3-4 days post-burst. Overall, we demonstrate the potential for extremely rapid radio follow-up of transients and the importance of triggered radio observations for constraining GRB blast wave properties, regardless of whether there is a detection, via the inclusion of force-fitted radio flux densities in afterglow modelling efforts.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
