'Better as a Buddhist': an interpretative phenomenological analysis of the reflections on the religious beliefs of Buddhist men serving a prison sentence for a sexual offence
This paper presents a qualitative analysis of the accounts offered by individuals (n=7) convicted of a sexual offence who describe themselves as Buddhists. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews within a custodial environment and analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). This paper presents the two superordinate themes that emerged from the data: (i) Better as a Buddhist and (ii) Ebb and Flow. Reflections and analysis from the Buddhist prison chaplain are integrated within the analysis of prisoner-participant data. Implications of the analysis are discussed with reference to interventions that use Buddhist principles, factors that underpin factors that help reduce reoffending and those that fit with the formation of a desistance narrative for religious individuals who have committed sexual offences
The generalized Kochen-Specker theorem
A proof of the generalized Kochen-Specker theorem in two dimensions due to
Cabello and Nakamura is extended to all higher dimensions. A set of 18 states
in four dimensions is used to give closely related proofs of the generalized
Kochen-Specker, Kochen-Specker and Bell theorems that shed some light on the
relationship between these three theorems.Comment: 5 pages, 1 Table. A new third paragraph and an additional reference

Relativistic expansion of a magnetized fluid
We study semi-analytical time-dependent solutions of the relativistic
magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations for the fields and the fluid emerging from
a spherical source. We assume uniform expansion of the field and the fluid and
a polytropic relation between the density and the pressure of the fluid. The
expansion velocity is small near the base but approaches the speed of light at
the light sphere where the flux terminates. We find self-consistent solutions
for the density and the magnetic flux. The details of the solution depend on
the ratio of the toroidal and the poloidal magnetic field, the ratio of the
energy carried by the fluid and the electromagnetic field and the maximum
velocity it reaches.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid

Using FU Orionis Outbursts to Constrain Self-Regulated Protostellar Disk Models
One dimensional, convective, vertical structure models and one dimensional,
time dependent, radial diffusion models are combined to create a
self-consistent picture in which FU~Orionis outbursts occur in young stellar
objects (YSOs) as the result of a large scale, self-regulated, thermal
ionization instability in the surrounding protostellar accretion disk. By
fitting the results of time dependent disk models to observed time scales of
FU~Orionis events, we estimate the magnitude of the effeciency of the effective
viscous stress in the inner disk (r < 1 AU) to be, in accordance with the ad
hoc ``alpha'' prescription, 10^{-4} where hydrogen is neutral and 10^{-3} where
hydrogen is ionized. We hypothesize that all YSOs receive infall onto their
outer disks which is steady (or slowly declining with time) and that FU~Orionis
outbursts are self-regulated, disk outbursts which occur only in systems which
transport matter inward at a rate sufficiently high to cause hydrogen to be
ionized in the inner disk. We estimate a critical mass flux of 5x10^{-7} solar
masses / year {\it independent of the magnitude of alpha} for systems with one
solar mass, three solar radius central objects. Infall accretion rates in the
range of (1-10)x10^{-6} solar masses per year produce observed FU~Orionis time
scales consistent with estimates of spherical molecular cloud core collapse
rates.Comment: 38 pages, 9 figures, uucompressed postscript: beware! remove stray

Hidden assumptions in the derivation of the Theorem of Bell
John Bell's inequalities have already been considered by Boole in 1862. Boole
established a one-to-one correspondence between experimental outcomes and
mathematical abstractions of his probability theory. His abstractions are
two-valued functions that permit the logical operations AND, OR and NOT and are
the elements of an algebra. Violation of the inequalities indicated to Boole an
inconsistency of definition of the abstractions and/or the necessity to revise
the algebra. It is demonstrated in this paper, that a violation of Bell's
inequality by Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen type of experiments can be explained by
Boole's ideas. Violations of Bell's inequality also call for a revision of the
mathematical abstractions and corresponding algebra. It will be shown that this
particular view of Bell's inequalities points toward an incompleteness of
quantum mechanics, rather than to any superluminal propagation or influences at
a distance
The comparative in vitro and in vivo activity of antilymphocyte serum raised by immunization with thymic, splenic, and lymph node lymphocytes
Rabbit ALS was raised against the splenic, thymic, and lymph node lymphocytes of inbred Fischer rats. The different antisera had the same ability to induce lymphopenia or to protect auxiliary cardiac homografts from rejection after transplantation from Wistar-Furth donors to Fischer recipients. There was a difference in the toxicity of the agents in that the antispleen and antithymus sera caused thrombocytopenia. The severity of this complication seemed related to the degree of platelet contamination of the rat cell suspensions originally given to the rabbits. The thrombocytopenia can be at least partially avoided by cleaning up the immunizing antigen as well as by platelet absorption of the resulting ALS. © 1969
Electron Positron Annihilation Radiation from SgrA East at the Galactic Center
Maps of the Galactic electron-positron annihilation radiation show evidence
for three distinct and significant features: (1) a central bulge source, (2)
emission in the Galactic plane, and (3) an enhancement of emission at positive
latitudes above the Galactic Center. In this paper, we explore the possibility
that Sgr A East, a very prominent radio structure surrounding the Galactic
nucleus, may be a significant contributer to the central bulge feature. The
motivation for doing so stems from a recently proposed link between this radio
object and the EGRET gamma-ray source 2EG J1746-2852. If this association is
correct, then Sgr A East is also expected to be a source of copious positron
production. The results presented here show that indeed Sgr A East must have
produced a numerically significant population of positrons, but also that most
of them have not yet had sufficient time to thermalize and annihilate. As such,
Sgr A East by itself does not appear to be the dominant current source of
annihilation radiation, but it will be when the positrons have cooled
sufficiently and they have become thermalized. This raises the interesting
possibility that the bulge component may be due to the relics of earlier
explosive events like the one that produced Sgr A East.Comment: This manuscript was prepared with the AAS Latex macros v4.0 It is 37

The no-signaling condition and quantum dynamics
We show that the basic dynamical rules of quantum physics can be derived from
its static properties and the condition that superluminal communication is
forbidden. More precisely, the fact that the dynamics has to be described by
linear completely positive maps on density matrices is derived from the
following assumptions: (1) physical states are described by rays in a Hilbert
space, (2) probabilities for measurement outcomes at any given time are
calculated according to the usual trace rule, (3) superluminal communication is
excluded. This result also constrains possible non-linear modifications of
quantum physics.Comment: 4 page
Calibration update of the COMBO-17 CDFS catalogue
We present an update to the photometric calibration of the COMBO-17 catalogue
on the Extended Chandra Deep Field South, which is now consistent with the
GaBoDS and MUSYC catalogues. As a result, photometric redshifts become slightly
more accurate, with <0.01 rms and little bias in the delta_z/(1+z) of galaxies
with R<21 and of QSOs with R<24. With increasing photon noise the rms of
galaxies reaches 0.02 for R<23 and 0.035 at R~23.5. Consequences for the
rest-frame colours of galaxies at z<1 are discussed.Comment: A&A research note, resubmitted 02 Oct 2008, 4 pages in print forma
