    The association between negative attention biases and symptoms of depression in a community sample of adolescents

    Adolescence is a vulnerable time for the onset of depression. Recent evidence from adult studies suggests not only that negative attention biases are correlated with symptoms of depression, but that reducing negative attention biases through training can in turn reduce symptomology. The role and plasticity of attention biases in adolescent depression, however, remains unclear. This study examines the association between symptoms of depression and attention biases, and whether such biases are modifiable, in a community sample of adolescents. We report data from 105 adolescents aged 13-17 who completed a dot-probe measure of attention bias before and after a single session of visual search-based cognitive bias modification training. This is the first study to find a significant association between negative attention biases and increased symptoms of depression in a community sample of adolescents. Contrary to expectations, we were unable to manipulate attention biases using a previously successful cognitive bias modification task. There were no significant effects of the training on positive affect and only modest effects of the training, identified in post-hoc analyses, were observed on negative affect. Our data replicate those from the adult literature, which suggest that adolescent depression is a disorder associated with negative attention biases, although we were unable to modify attention biases in our study. We identify numerous parameters of our methodology which may explain these null training effects, and which could be addressed in future cognitive bias modification studies of adolescent depression

    Caring for older people with dementia in the emergency department.

    Background: Admission to an emergency department (ED) may expose the older person with dementia to a range of negative consequences, including a deterioration in their behavioural symptoms. The authors conducted a review of primary research relating to the experiences of older people with dementia, their carers and ED nurses, to understand how these experiences might inform nursing practice. Methods: Integrative review with a search of the electronic databases of Medline, CINAHL and PSYCHINFO using specified inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Three themes were identified: carers and older people with dementia-waiting and worrying; nurses juggling priorities; and strategies for improvement-taking a partnership approach. Conclusion: Older people with dementia may be exposed to disparities in treatment in the ED. A practice partnership between carers and ED nurses may help to prevent this. ED nurses need support to blend technical- and relationship-centred care. Participatory research exploring the experiences of older people with dementia, their carers and ED nurses is needed

    Osteogenic potential of human adipose derived stem cell co-culture with human osteoblast on titanium dioxide nanofibrous surface

    The study aims to evaluate the osteogenic potential of human adipose derived stem cell (HADSC) co-culture with human osteoblast (HOB) using selected HADSC/HOB ratio of 2:1, 1:1 and 1:2, respectively. The HADSC/HOB was seeded on Titanium dioxide (TiO2) coated with or without nanofibre substrate. The non-coated TiO2 was used as control. The effects of TiO2 based scaffolds on cell adhesion were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cell viability, differentiation and mineralization were assessed by Alamar Blue, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Alizarin Red assays, respectively. The combination of HADSC/HOB, 2:1 ratio, seeded on nanofibrous-coated TiO2 showed better cell adhesion, viability, differentiation and mineralization than the other groups. This study offers opportunity to assess in vitro cellular development of HADSC through direct cell to cell contact with HOB. This study indicates that the co-cultured HADSC/HOB seeded on TiO2 based scaffolds may serve as a promising approach to facilitate osteogenic differentiation activity

    Hydrothermal Synthesis and Characterisation of Bioactive Glass-Ceramic Nanorods

    In this study fabrication of rod-like bioactive glass-ceramics (BGCs) using hydrothermal treatment based on a sol-gel precursor is reported for the first time. BGCs with composition 58 wt% SiO2, 33 wt% CaO and 9 wt% P2O5 were synthesized in different thermal conditions (200 and 220 °C) and characterised with regard to morphology, chemical composition and crystallinity. The bioactivity of the materials was assessed by immersion in simulated body fluid for up to 7 days. The results revealed that as the reaction temperature increased from 200 to 220 °C, the diameter of rods was reduced from microscale to nanoscale and the crystallinity was enhanced. It was also found that the BGC nanorods have higher surface area and consequently enhanced bioactivity than BGC microrods. This technique provides a facile method for rapid production of BGC nanorods at relatively low temperature which may have the potential to be used as bioactive composite reinforcement or for bone grafting applications

    Progress of key strategies in development of electrospun scaffolds: bone tissue

    There has been unprecedented development in tissue engineering (TE) over the last few years owing to its potential applications, particularly in bone reconstruction or regeneration. In this article, we illustrate several advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to the design of electrospun TE scaffolds. We also review the major benefits of electrospun fibers for three-dimensional scaffolds in hard connective TE applications and identify the key strategies that can improve the mechanical properties of scaffolds for bone TE applications. A few interesting results of recent investigations have been explained for future trends in TE scaffold research

    Five-year costs from a randomised comparison of bilateral and single internal thoracic artery grafts

    Background: The use of bilateral internal thoracic arteries (BITA) for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) may improve survival compared with CABG using single internal thoracic arteries (SITA). We assessed the long-term costs of BITA compared with SITA. Methods: Between June 2004 and December 2007, 3102 patients from 28 hospitals in seven countries were randomised to CABG surgery using BITA (n=1548) or SITA (n=1554). Detailed resource use data were collected from the initial hospital episode and annually up to 5 years. The associated costs of this resource use were assessed from a UK perspective with 5 year totals calculated for each trial arm and pre-selected patient subgroups. Results: Total costs increased by approximately £1000 annually in each arm, with no significant annual difference between trial arms. Cumulative costs per patient at 5-year follow-up remained significantly higher in the BITA group (£18 629) compared with the SITA group (£17 480; mean cost difference £1149, 95% CI £330 to £1968, p=0.006) due to the higher costs of the initial procedure. There were no significant differences between the trial arms in the cost associated with healthcare contacts, medication use or serious adverse events. Conclusions: Higher index costs for BITA were still present at 5-year follow-up mainly driven by the higher initial cost with no subsequent difference emerging between 1 year and 5 years of follow-up. The overall cost-effectiveness of the two procedures, to be assessed at the primary endpoint of the 10-year follow-up, will depend on composite differences in costs and quality-adjusted survival
