The clinical and bacilloscopic results obtained in a comparative study of the therapeutic action of rifampicin and DDS in the treatment of the virchow form of Hansen's disease are presented. Two relatively homogeneous groups of 24 and 23 patients were observed during periods ranging from 12 to 24 months. The results demonstrated the superiority of the action of rifampicin during the first months of treatment, both in clinical aspects and in relation to the reduction of viable bacilli. Rifampicin is recommended for treatment of the virchow form of Hansen's disease, at least at the begining of the treatment.São apresentados resultados clínicos e baciloscópicos obtidos, em estudo comparativo, na experimentação terapêutica da ação da rifampicina e diamino-difenil-sulfona na hanseníase virchoviana.

Chronic infectious, granulomatous and suppurative dermatosis, classified among the subcutaneous mycoses, prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions and caused by the traumatic implantation of dematiaceous fungal species, where the presence of muriform bodies is an expression of the causal agent in the grafted tissue, are characteristic of chromoblastomycosis. Considered the second implantation mycosis in the world, it manifests itself with slow and progressive growth lesions of exophytic and verrucous plaques and black dots on the surface. The disease is considered a neglected and occupational disease, which occurs mainly among agricultural workers, coconut and babassu harvesters, lumberjacks, and traders of agricultural products. It is important to highlight that people at risk of contracting chromoblastomycosis work in tropical countries, where the temperature can be above 40 °C in summer, and generally refuse to wear protective equipment during the day (shoes, gloves, clothes, etc.), although they know that this type of prophylactic measure can prevent different types of diseases. These vulnerable people often live in low-income countries and sometimes live far from medical services and, once infected, do not seek medical attention. We report below an exuberant and unusual case due to multiple simultaneous inoculations on the back after the patient suffered an accidental fall while working on his farm. The diagnosis was established by direct mycological examination, histopathological examination, culture, microculture, and MALDI-TOF MS analysis that identified the agent of the Fonsecaea pedrosoi

Thiamphenicol, an aminic derivate of hydrocarbilsulfonil propandiol, was used for the treatment of 1,171 chancroid bearing patients. Each patient was medicated with 5.0 g of granulated thiamphenicol, orally, in a single dose, and was reevaluated 3, 7 and 10 days after the treatment. Ten patients (0.89%) did not respond to the proposed treatment. 133 patients presented healed ulcers after 3 days of treatment, 976 patients healed chancres on the seventh day after the treatment, and 39 patients took 10 days to present healed chancres. The results of this study indicate that the rate of patients that were cured, the low incidence of side effects, and the practicality of administration make of thiamphenicol an excellent choice for the treatment of chancroid.<br>O tiamfenicol, derivado amínico do hidrocarbilsulfonil propandiol, foi utilizado para o tratamento de 1.171 pacientes portadores de cancróide.

The authors present the results obtained in the treatment of pityriasis versicolor with Itraconazole, comparing two schemes of treatment, in an open trial: 200 mg daily, for 5 and 7 days. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed by Wood's light and mycologically, by direct examination. The patients were controlled 21 and 35 days after beginning the treatment. The evaluation of the results showed that both schemes were effective. At the second control, there was clinical and mycologic cure in 90% of the patients from the 5-day group and in 95% of the patients from the 7-day group. The tolerance was good: 2 patients from the 7-day group and 1 patient from the 5-day group showed side-effects. Since there was no significant difference between the two schemes of treatment, the authors recommend the shortest one, that is, 200 mg daily for 5 days

The Authors describe an anti-Leishmania IgA-ELISA assay in mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. Increased titers were found in leishmaniasis patients, mainly in the first and second year of infection and in deep mycoses patients showing either mucosal involvement or widespread disease.
