    Facing technology : creative solutions to real-world problems.

    We are shaped by technology. This simple idea has become more familiar to social scientists, technical engineers, and some tech users. The first section of this thesis finds unfavorable consequences of constant social media usage, such as unawareness, behavioral and cogitative modifications, and disconnection as societal ills. The second part of this thesis explains how these social side effects can be best ameliorated by “serious” designers, or those whose work is conceptual with real world applications (McLuhan, 8). The final section proposes a creative expression as it relates to bringing awareness to the social side effects of tech usage, linking the first and second sections by theory put to practice. I propose a designer’s creativity as the technique by which interactions with technology and people should progress. If we proceed as we are, our future ostensibly leans toward virtual realities that have the potential to deconstruct the human element

    A New Way to Manage Uncataloged Materials: A Case Study from Moving the University of Nevada, Reno’s Federal Depository Collection

    In 2008, the University of Nevada, Reno Library moved into a new building, the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center. As part of this move, approximately half of the library’s print collections were moved into the building’s automated storage and retrieval system; a substantial portion of these materials were federal depository materials. This case study describes how cataloging and government documents staff at the University of Nevada, Reno collaborated to achieve intellectual and physical control over a huge, largely uncataloged government documents collection destined for automated storage. More than 9,000 linear feet of uncataloged government documents had to be placed into an automated storage system that requires catalog records for all stored items. To accommodate uncataloged documents, staff devised a way to create bulk catalog records, store these materials efficiently, and provide user access. The authors explain how this project was planned and executed as part of the library move, and then assess the success of the project and its impact on public and technical services operations after a year of working with the new system. The impact on public access in moving this collection is particularly significant in light of the library’s service mandate as a regional federal depository

    Multi layered shotcrete design for tunnel construction

    Shotcrete linings have been applied successfully for a large number of tunnel constructions within the last couple of decades all around the world. While up to the 1980’s the structural design of the shotcrete linings mainly was based on experience gathered throughout the construction and some simplified analyses in the following years the application of the Finite Element Method lead to much more sophisticated design and more accurate estimation of deformations and stress state in the shotcrete lining. This was amongst others achieved by considering the time and construction sequence - dependent development of the deformations as well as by applying simplified time dependent material laws for shotcrete. The design verification as such is commonly done by using the methods as stated in Eurocode 2 for ULS and SLS. The design becomes even more complex for cases in which during a first construction stage one shotcrete layer is applied and stressed and only later additional, stress free layers are applied in order to carry additional loads caused by further construction stages. With such situations tunnel designers have to deal frequently in cases when cross sections between two main tunnels need to be installed or a second, parallel tunnel is driven while the first tunnel is already in place. Within this paper the special case of such multi – layer shotcrete linings is discussed and proposals for the calculation of the stress state in the lining and the design verification are made

    A substantial body of research reveals that unethical behavior continues to be a concern in the workplace.  This article presents information on the prevalence of unethical behavior, antecedents of unethical behavior, the organizational environment, cognitive moral development, and trends of unethical behavior over a 3 year span.  Findings of earlier studies generally agree that unethical behavior has a negative effect in the workplace.  The greatest research effort on this issue has been to continue to conduct studies within organizations, identifying if the issue of unethical behavior is improving or stagnant

    The 665 m long, twin-track Untersammelsdorf Tunnel is being built in the course of the construction of the Koralmbahn line between Graz and Klagenfurt. The tunnel is located in extremely challenging subsoil conditions consisting of silty to fine sandy lacustrine deposits. The developed tunneling concept provided wide-ranging special underground engineering measures as piling, jet grouting and temporary struts and represents a unique construction method to date. Accordingly, numerous challenges arose in the design phase, which could be verified by carrying out extensive trials and investigations in the preparatory period or for which fallback levels had to be provided for the support system.     Linking Monitoring and Data Analysis to Predictions and Decisions for the Range-wide Eastern Black Rail Status Assessment

    The US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has initiated a re-envisioned approach for providing decision makers with the best available science and synthesis of that information, called the Species Status Assessment (SSA), for endangered species decision making. The SSA report is a descriptive document that provides decision makers with an assessment of the current and pre - dicted future status of a species. These analyses support all manner of decisions under the US Endangered Species Act, such as listing, reclassification, and recovery planning. Novel scientific analysis and predictive modeling in SSAs could be an important part of rooting conservation decisions in current data and cutting edge analytical and modeling techniques. Here, we describe a novel analysis of available data to assess the current condition of eastern black rail Laterallus jamai censis jamai cen sis across its range in a dynamic occupancy analysis. We used the results of the ana lysis to develop a site occupancy projection model where the model parameters (initial occupancy, site persistence, colo nization) were linked to environmental covariates, such as land management and land cover change (sea-level rise, development, etc.). We used the projection model to predict future status under multiple sea-level rise and habitat management scenarios. Occupancy probability and site colonization were low in all analysis units, and site persistence was also low, suggesting low resiliency and redundancy currently. Extinction probability was high for all analysis units in all simulated scenarios except one with significant effort to preserve existing habitat, suggesting low future re siliency and redundancy. With the results of these data analyses and predictive models, the USFWS concluded that protections of the Endangered Species Act were warranted for this subspecies
