Banana fibres and oil cans: constructing pedagogical understandings of creativity through childhood play memories in a Ugandan context

    Get PDF
In this small-scale study, pedagogical connections are made, by a student educator on an early childhood studies degree, by identifying creative processes within their childhood play memories in Uganda. Using narrative inquiry, student educators tell their stories and are able to explore and examine creativity in their lived experiences. This informed how they view and understand the critical role of nurturing creativity in children, but also how as educators they think about and allow for a creative pedagogy in practice. Further, it is concluded that the use of narrative inquiry in this way can be a thought-provoking tool for research within the field of early childhood education

Creative encounters beyond the door: supporting children and families through Half Moon Theatre's Early Years Creative Play programme

This article presents the work of Beccy Allen, Head of Creative Learning at Half Moon Theatre, and her creative practitioners, Madeleine Graham and Daniel Mariño, on their extensive Early Years Creative Play (EYCP) programme for families and their children. The programme has been running since 2018, in children’s centres and nursery schools across the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, where families are invited to join, and in community spaces where local families are able to drop in. Breaking the tradition of relying on academic researchers to measure the impact of their programme, Beccy and her team engage with their own evaluation processes to measure the creative encounters that parent and child receive through the EYCP programme. As an outsider looking in, I present in this short article their work so that one can advocate for the continuation of such vital resources for children’s creative cultural and artistic lives

Theory and it ab initio calculation of radiative lifetime of excitons in semiconducting carbon nanotubes

We present theoretical analysis and first-principles calculation of the radiative lifetime of excitons in semiconducting carbon nanotubes. An intrinsic lifetime of the order of 10 ps is computed for the lowest optically active bright excitons. The intrinsic lifetime is however a rapid increasing function of the exciton momentum. Moreover, the electronic structure of the nanotubes dictates the existence of dark excitons nearby in energy to each bright exciton. Both effects strongly influence measured lifetime. Assuming a thermal occupation of bright and dark exciton bands, we find an effective lifetime of the order of 10 ns at room temperature, in good accord with recent experiments.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

Diameter and Chirality Dependence of Exciton Properties in Carbon Nanotubes

We calculate the diameter and chirality dependences of the binding energies, sizes, and bright-dark splittings of excitons in semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Using results and insights from {\it ab initio} calculations, we employ a symmetry-based, variational method based on the effective-mass and envelope-function approximations using tight-binding wavefunctions. Binding energies and spatial extents show a leading dependence with diameter as 1/d1/d and dd, respectively, with chirality corrections providing a spread of roughly 20% with a strong family behavior. Bright-dark exciton splittings show a 1/d21/d^2 leading dependence. We provide analytical expressions for the binding energies, sizes, and splittings that should be useful to guide future experiments

Introduction: Nowadays, for organizational success, managers should accept multiple roles that each requires trainings for specific skills. This issue especially is much more important in health care systems that are responsible for improving the health of the society. Therefore, this study was aimed to determine three managerial skills among midwifery managers Iranian Medical Sciences Universities.Method: This study was descriptive and data collection method was cross-sectional. The subjects in this study included members of the Board of Midwifery and Reproductive Health, bachelors of midwifery in the field of health care and members of midwifery faculty from eight Iranian universities of medical sciences. Collecting information was performed through demographic characteristics questionnaire and triple skills of management researcher-made questionnaire. Validity and reliability were determined through content validity and Cronbach's alpha coefficient of α = 0.88 and test results were evaluated and analyzed by inferential statistics (ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test) which p < 0.05 was considered as the significant level. Results: The results of this study showed that in the field of knowledge, managers prioritized the skills as follows: the human-communicational skills (MR =69.05), technical skills (MR =50.31) and theoretical-cognitive skills (MR =47.57). Also prioritization of skills from the perspective of the study population in the field of importance was human-communicational skills (MR =82.23), technical skills (MR =76.57) and theoretical-cognitive skills (MR =75.47).Discussion: According to the results of this study, the importance of humancommunicational skills in all the hierarchy and categories of management is one of the essential tasks of managers for promoting organizations toward the achievement of their goals efficiently and effectively. Keywords: Managers, Management Skills, Human Skills, Midwive

Excitonic Effects and Optical Spectra of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Many-electron effects often dramatically modify the properties of reduced dimensional systems. We report calculations, based on an many-electron Green's function approach, of electron-hole interaction effects on the optical spectra of small-diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes. Excitonic effects qualitatively alter the optical spectra of both semiconducting and metallic tubes. Excitons are bound by ~ 1 eV in the semiconducting (8,0) tube and by ~ 100 meV in the metallic (3,3) tube. These large many-electron effects explain the discrepancies between previous theories and experiments.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 2 table
