Classification of the phases of 1D spin chains with commuting Hamiltonians

We consider the class of spin Hamiltonians on a 1D chain with periodic boundary conditions that are (i) translational invariant, (ii) commuting and (iii) scale invariant, where by the latter we mean that the ground state degeneracy is independent of the system size. We correspond a directed graph to a Hamiltonian of this form and show that the structure of its ground space can be read from the cycles of the graph. We show that the ground state degeneracy is the only parameter that distinguishes the phases of these Hamiltonians. Our main tool in this paper is the idea of Bravyi and Vyalyi (2005) in using the representation theory of finite dimensional C^*-algebras to study commuting Hamiltonians.Comment: 8 pages, improved readability, added exampl

Theory and it ab initio calculation of radiative lifetime of excitons in semiconducting carbon nanotubes

We present theoretical analysis and first-principles calculation of the radiative lifetime of excitons in semiconducting carbon nanotubes. An intrinsic lifetime of the order of 10 ps is computed for the lowest optically active bright excitons. The intrinsic lifetime is however a rapid increasing function of the exciton momentum. Moreover, the electronic structure of the nanotubes dictates the existence of dark excitons nearby in energy to each bright exciton. Both effects strongly influence measured lifetime. Assuming a thermal occupation of bright and dark exciton bands, we find an effective lifetime of the order of 10 ns at room temperature, in good accord with recent experiments.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

Diameter and Chirality Dependence of Exciton Properties in Carbon Nanotubes

We calculate the diameter and chirality dependences of the binding energies, sizes, and bright-dark splittings of excitons in semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Using results and insights from {\it ab initio} calculations, we employ a symmetry-based, variational method based on the effective-mass and envelope-function approximations using tight-binding wavefunctions. Binding energies and spatial extents show a leading dependence with diameter as 1/d1/d and dd, respectively, with chirality corrections providing a spread of roughly 20% with a strong family behavior. Bright-dark exciton splittings show a 1/d21/d^2 leading dependence. We provide analytical expressions for the binding energies, sizes, and splittings that should be useful to guide future experiments

The analysis of the effect of tax on profitability indices in listed companies of Tehran Stock Exchange

Profitability is considered as the most complicated feature for a company to be understood and evaluated. These ratios included in profitability are applied for evaluating business capabilities and making the wages in comparison with all cost during a specific period of time. In a more accurate way, the ratios indicate the profitability of a company, having calculated the total costs and tax on revenue, operational efficiency, company pricing policies, assets profitability and company’s shareholders. The approach applied in this research is descriptive-analytic. Using the data of 28 companies listed in Tehran Stock Exchange from 2004 to 2010 and using panel data approach, the tax effects over the paid profitability indices were studied in this paper. The results achieved from all estimation cases point out a negative significant effects on various profitability indices. It should be mentioned that in order to relate the taxes to the profitability indices, the costs and the debts of a corporation can be referred. Results of the study indicated that the debts ratio to asset and the type of the industry showed a negative effect on profitability and capital ratio to asset and the size of the company indicated positive significant effects on profitability index

Unilateral visual loss resulting from orbital encroachment of an ethmoidal juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma

Ossifying fibromas are mainly found in the mandible and maxilla. Reports of them arising in the ethmoid sinuses and orbits are rare. We present a case of an otherwise healthy 20-year-old man with gradual onset of right visual disturbance signified by right relative afferent pupillary defect due to a large unilateral ossifying fibroma arising from the ethmoid sinus compressing the medial half of the right orbit. We emphasise the multidisciplinary combined endoscopic endonasal and external approach to ensure a successful debulking of the fibroma
