    Verbal prefixation in German child and adult language

    Previous research has demonstrated that children pick up even small differences in the lexicalization patterns of closely related languages quickly and successfully. This study examines verbal prefixation in German child and adult language, using a particularly detailed case study. The data show that the child starts to produce prefixed verbs and prepositional phrases within a few months. More crucially, the child's speech gets attuned to the precise frequency distribution of these constructions in the input. These findings support theories of linguistic relativity whichemphasize the importance of the conventionality in language use for language processing and acquisition. A look at the input language reveals that the adults use hundreds of lexical items per hour which provide information about the use of verbal prefixation. Also, input frequencies did not change over time. This suggests that the structural properties of a given language are very stable, and help the child to become a proficient speaker

    Usage-based and emergentist approaches to language acquisition

    It was long considered to be impossible to learn grammar based on linguistic experience alone. In the past decade, however, advances in usage-based linguistic theory, computational linguistics, and developmental psychology changed the view on this matter. So-called usage-based and emergentist approaches to language acquisition state that language can be learned from language use itself, by means of social skills like joint attention, and by means of powerful generalization mechanisms. This paper first summarizes the assumptions regarding the nature of linguistic representations and processing. Usage-based theories are nonmodular and nonreductionist, i.e., they emphasize the form-function relationships, and deal with all of language, not just selected levels of representations. Furthermore, storage and processing is considered to be analytic as well as holistic, such that there is a continuum between children's unanalyzed chunks and abstract units found in adult language. In the second part, the empirical evidence is reviewed. Children's linguistic competence is shown to be limited initially, and it is demonstrated how children can generalize knowledge based on direct and indirect positive evidence. It is argued that with these general learning mechanisms, the usage-based paradigm can be extended to multilingual language situations and to language acquisition under special circumstance

    The concept of ?constructions? covers the range from fully unanalyzed or ?frozen? units to abstract and productive schemas that can be used to form new utterances, even with verbs that usually have a different valency (coercion). The dynamic nature of the construction as well as its functional grounding makes the construction particularly suitable for describing and explaining the course of language acquisition. Distributional analyses of the linguistic structures used across development as well as experimental tests on the productivity of these structures are the methodological means to assess the degree of freedom of constructions used at each point in development.     Gradual development of constructional complexity in German spatial language

    In this paper, we assess the developmental trajectories by which children approach adult levels of complexity and informativeness in the linguistically and conceptually challenging domain of spatial language. To this end, we look at three types of spatial relations (localization, spontaneous and caused motion) in spontaneous German child speech (age 2;6 to 2;11 and 4;6 to 4;11), and in elicited Frog Story narratives from German child and adult speakers (3-, 5-, 9-year-olds, and adults. Children are generally sensitive to typological preferences. From early on, their productions reflect target-language-specific lexicalization patterns. Our analyses show that they still approach adult-like levels of information complexity and density only gradually. This concerns the local complexity (structural repertoire for the conceptual slots figure, verb, path/ground), as also established in previous research, but in particular the global complexity, as investigated in this study. Global complexity measures the structural integration of information, or the combinatorial complexity that surfaces at the utterance level. As predicted by usage-based theories, adult-like degrees of informativeness and information density are only reached gradually, although the component parts at the local level are available earlier in development

    Die Nachfrage nach Bio-Produkten wächst während die Erzeugung tendenziell stagniert. Das gilt für Hamburg, wie auch bundesweit. Um jedoch Entscheidungen zu gezielten Maßnahmen für die Stärkung eines regionalen Öko-Marktes zu treffen, werden Informationen über den Markt und seine Strukturen benötigt, die bislang in Hamburg fehlen. Die vorliegende Studie der Universität Hamburg untersuchte daher im Auftrag der Behörde für Wirtschaft und Arbeit der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg die aktuellen Angebots- und Vermarktungsstrukturen von Bio-Produkten in und um Hamburg. Ziel war es zunächst, eine Bestandsaufnahme der Hamburger Öko-Marktstrukturen vorzunehmen und ein Bild darüber zu zeichnen, welche Rolle die regionalen Bezugs- und Absatzwege in Hamburg spielen. Daraus wurden schließlich Handlungsoptionen zur sinnvollen Ausweitung des regionalen Öko-Marktes abgeleitet, die nicht nur für den Hamburger Raum von Interesse sein können.
