The Nernst effect and the boundaries of the Fermi liquid picture

Following the observation of an anomalous Nernst signal in cuprates, the Nernst effect was explored in a variety of metals and superconductors during the past few years. This paper reviews the results obtained during this exploration, focusing on the Nernst response of normal quasi-particles as opposed to the one generated by superconducting vortices or by short-lived Cooper pairs. Contrary to what has been often assumed, the so-called Sondheimer cancelation does not imply a negligible Nernst response in a Fermi liquid. In fact, the amplitude of the Nernst response measured in various metals in the low-temperature limit is scattered over six orders of magnitude. According to the data, this amplitude is roughly set by the ratio of electron mobility to Fermi energy in agreement with the implications of the semi-classical transport theory.Comment: Final version, Topical review for JPC

Hierarchy of random deterministic chaotic maps with an invariant measure

Hierarchy of one and many-parameter families of random trigonometric chaotic maps and one-parameter random elliptic chaotic maps of cn\bf{cn} type with an invariant measure have been introduced. Using the invariant measure (Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen measure), the Kolmogrov-Sinai entropy of the random chaotic maps have been calculated analytically, where the numerical simulations support the resultsComment: 11 pages, Late

Sub-Filter Scale Models for Scalar Transport in Large Eddy Simulations

Large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent heat transfer in an in- nite channel has been used to compare the performance of several promising sub-lter-scale models for modelling the transport of a passive scalar. The dynamic mixed model and the dynamic reconstruction model (a higher order version of the mixed model) have been reported in the literature to perform very well in LES of turbulent ow. Here these models are tested to determine the model's suitability for modelling transport of a passive scalar. These models together with the dynamic Smagorinsky model and a no-model case, are tested at a Prandtl number of 0.71 and Reynolds number of 180 based on wall friction velocity and channel half width. Both the dynamic reconstruction model and the dynamic mixed model perform very well showing clear improvement in the prediction of the mean ow and other turbulent statistics compared to the no-model case. The standard dynamic Smagorinsky model without the additional reconstruction terms performs quite poorly

Watermarking based on discrete wavelet transform and q-deformed chaotic map

Hierarchy of one-dimensional ergodic chaotic maps with Tsallis type of q-deformation are studied. We find that in the chaotic region, these maps with q-deformation are ergodic as the Birkhoff ergodic theorem predicts. q-deformed maps are defined as ratios of polynomials of degree N. Hence, by using the Stieltjes transform approach (STA), invariant measure is proposed. In addition, considering Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen (SRB) measure, Kolmogorov-Sinai (KS) entropy for q-deformed maps is calculated analytically. The new q-deformed scheme have ability to keep previous significant properties such as ergodicity, sensitivity to initial condition. By adding q-parameter to the hierarchy in order increase the randomness and one-way computation, we present a new scheme for watermarking. The introduced algorithm tries to improve the problem of failure of encryption such as small key space, encryption speed and level of security. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, some security analyses are presented. By considering the obtained results, it can be concluded that, this scheme have a high potential to be adopted for watermarking. It can be concluded that, the proposed novel watermarking scheme for image authentication can be applied for practical applications. © 2017 Elsevier Lt

Intelligent controlling microbubble radial oscillations by using Slave-Master Feedback control

Dynamics of acoustically driven microbubbles in ultrasonic fields are known to be complex and uncontrollable phenomena indicative of a highly active nonlinear as well as chaotic behavior. In this paper, a method based on Slave-Master Feedback (SMF) to suppress unstable radial oscillations of contrast agents is presented. In the proposed control process, the encapsulated microbubbles as the slave system is coupled with a dynamical system as the master, so that the output of the coupled system is able to produce a stable oscillation. A great virtue of this control technique is its flexibility. In comparison with existing techniques, the present dynamical chaos control method does not need to know more than one variable. The numerical results show its strong impact on reducing the chaotic oscillations to regular ones. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved
