    Deer in medieval Ireland: preliminary evidence from Kilteasheen, Co. Roscommon

    Animal bones are among the most common finds from excavations in\ud Ireland, and the majority of these are the remains of cattle, sheep and pig. While\ud bones from other species are also found they rarely receive much attention in\ud excavation reports where most of the discussion is focused on the economically\ud important species. Deer bones are usually only excavated in small numbers but are\ud common themes in medieval artwork, poetry and literature,1\ud and so can be said to\ud have a symbolic importance far beyond their economic value.\ud A red deer skull and six fragments of antler from at least three individual\ud deer were found during recent excavations at a high-status ecclesiastical site at\ud Kilteasheen, Knockvicar, Co. Roscommon, on the shores of Lough Cé, and were\ud analyzed by the author. These bones provided an opportunity to partially redress the\ud lack of attention paid to the minor species by synthesizing what is known about\ud deer and deer hunting in medieval Ireland, so hopefully providing archaeologists\ud and historians with useful background information.     An Interdisciplinary Approach to Historic Diet and Foodways: the FoodCult Project

    This research note introduces the methodology of the FoodCult Project, with the aim of stimulating discussion regarding the interdisciplinary potential for historical food studies. The project represents the first major attempt to establish both the fundamentals of everyday diet, and the cultural ‘meaning’ of food and drink in early modern Ireland, c 1550-1650. This was a period of major economic development, unprecedented intercultural contact, but also of conquest, colonisation and war, and the study focusses on Ireland as a case-study for understanding the role of food in a complex society. Moving beyond the colonial narrative of Irish social and economic development, it enlarges the study of food and identity to examine neglected themes in Irish historiography, including gender, class and religious identities, as expressed through the consumption of food and drink. Taking advantage of exciting recent archaeological discoveries and the increased accessibility of the archaeological evidence, the project develops a ground-breaking interdisciplinary approach, merging micro-historical analytical techniques with cutting-edge molecular science, experimental archaeology, data modelling and statistical analysis, to examine what was eaten, where, why and by whom, at a level of detail previously deemed impossible for this period in history. This overview provides a framework to facilitate the interpretation of descriptive literary, visual, and other representative historical sources for diet, building a bridge between ideas and practises in the development of early modern foodways. The project will lead to unparalleled collaboration across the sciences and humanities, serving as a model for future comparative interdisciplinary work across diverse chronologies and regions

    The 10,000-year biocultural history of fallow deer and its implications for conservation policy

    Over the last 10,000 years, humans have manipulated fallow deer populations with varying outcomes. Persian fallow deer (Dama mesopotamica) are now endangered. European fallow deer (Dama dama) are globally widespread and are simultaneously considered wild, domestic, endangered, invasive, and are even the national animal of Barbuda and Antigua. Despite their close association with people, there is no consensus regarding their natural ranges or the timing and circumstances of their human-mediated translocations and extirpations. Our mitochondrial analyses of modern and archaeological specimens revealed two distinct clades of European fallow deer present in Anatolia and the Balkans. Zooarchaeological evidence suggests these regions were their sole glacial refugia. By combining biomolecular analyses with archaeological and textual evidence, we chart the declining distribution of Persian fallow deer and demonstrate that humans repeatedly translocated European fallow deer, sourced from the most geographically distant populations. Deer taken to Chios and Rhodes in the Neolithic derived not from nearby Anatolia, but from the Balkans. Though fallow deer were translocated throughout the Mediterranean as part of their association with the Greco-Roman goddesses Artemis and Diana, deer taken to Roman Mallorca were not locally available Dama dama, but Dama mesopotamica. Romans also initially introduced fallow deer to Northern Europe but the species became extinct and was reintroduced in the medieval period, this time from Anatolia.     Parks and Deer-Hunting: Evidence from Medieval Ireland

    This thesis examines aspects of hunting in later medieval Ireland, with particular reference to the Anglo-Norman period, from 1169 to c. 1350. The focus is on deer hunting and on parks, in which fallow deer could be kept. To date no detailed study of hunting in high medieval Ireland has been carried out, and as a result the study uses an interdisciplinary approach in order to maximise the scope of coverage. The aim of this thesis is to understand how parks and deer hunting were used to create and maintain identities, and how these functioned as a form of social and cultural expression in high medieval Ireland. Deer hunting was central to elite society, having symbolic significance, as well as developing military skills and forging social bonds. Fallow deer were unusual, but not rare in later medieval Ireland. They were limited to the east of the country and to the highest tier of Anglo-Norman lordly society, being relatively common finds from castle excavations. Notably, the evidence suggests that the bones of all species of wild mammals are much less frequently found on Irish castle sites than on English elite sites. The study identifies thirty-nine documented high medieval parks, and includes detailed examination of five of these. All thirty-nine were in Anglo-Norman areas, with no high medieval parks found in Gaelic Ireland. Today, the parks have been forgotten, however survey has shown that physical features do survive at the sites of many of those surveyed. Parks were integral to Anglo-Norman identity, being used to create a sense of place and familiarity in a foreign land. Unlike England, however, they did not become widespread, and few were stocked with deer.2018-05-1

    Ireland\u27s fallow deer: Their historical, archaeological and biomolecular records

    The Anglo-Normans first introduced fallow deer (Dama dama) to Ireland in the thirteenth century, however no biomolecular research has previously been undertaken to examine the timing, circumstances and impact of the arrival of this species. This study combines historical, zooarchaeological, genetic and isotopic data from both medieval and post-medieval samples to address this lack of research. The paper identifies a peak in the presence of fallow deer in Ireland between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, with a corresponding peak in documentary evidence for their presence in the thirteenth century. The deer are predominantly male, and from castle sites, supporting the historical evidence for their link with elite hunting. The English origin of the source populations shows correspondence between the documentary evidence, suggesting a western bias-and genetic evidence-with a similarity to southern and western England.     Diet in Medieval Gaelic Ireland: A multiproxy study of the human remains from Ballyhanna, Co. Donegal

    This study investigates the nature of diet in a predominantly Late Medieval Gaelic Irish skeletal population and explores whether any sex-based and/or age differences were evident in the population. A smaller sub-sample was also examined to determine whether there was any evidence for dietary change over time between the Early Medieval (c.700–c.1200) and Late Medieval periods (c.1200–c.1600). The dietary evidence was derived using a multiproxy approach that combined information from dental palaeopathology (n = 356 adults) and analysis of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope compositions (n = 72 individuals). A higher proportion of females were affected by carious lesions when compared to males. This is possibly suggestive of differing levels of carbohydrate consumption between the sexes, although other factors such as eating habits, and genetic and physiological differences may also have influenced the patterns in the data. The isotopic values indicated that both sexes were consuming similar amounts and types (marine vs. terrestrial) of dietary protein. Elevated δ15N indicated breastfeeding among the youngest in society but, once children had been weaned, the dietary protein was isotopically similar across the different age categories. Among a smaller radiocarbon-dated sub-sample (n = 37), there was an increase in both the percentage of individuals affected by dental caries and the percentage of teeth affected by dental caries between the Early Medieval and Late Medieval periods. This increase may indicate a greater inclusion of plant-based carbohydrates, such as cereals, in the diet over time, although it may also reflect the younger age distribution of the Early Medieval sample. Interpretations for each of these patterns are discussed with reference to the historical and archaeological evidence. Multiproxy palaeodietary studies for Medieval Ireland are limited and this is the first substantial study of evidence derived from both dental palaeopathology and stable isotope analysis.<br

    Anthropogenic changes to the Holocene nitrogen cycle in Ireland

    Humans have always affected their ecosystems, but finding evidence for significant and lasting changes to preindustrial landscapes is rare. We report on human-caused changes to the nitrogen cycle in Ireland in the Bronze Age, associated with intensification of agriculture and animal husbandry that resulted in long-term changes to the nitrogen isotope values of animals (wild and domesticates) during the Holocene. Major changes to inputs and cycling of soil nitrogen occurred through deforestation, land clearance and management, and more intensive animal husbandry and cereal crop cultivation in the later Bronze Age; after this time, the Irish landscape took on its current form. Within the debate concerning the onset of the Anthropocene, our data suggest that human activity in Ireland was significant enough in the Bronze Age to have long-term impact, thereby marking a profound shift in the relationship between humans and their environment
