A Note on Flux Induced Superpotentials in String Theory
Non-vanishing fluxes in M-theory and string theory compactifications induce a
superpotential in the lower dimensional theory. Gukov has conjectured the
explicit form of this superpotential. We check this conjecture for the
heterotic string compactified on a Calabi-Yau three-fold as well as for warped
M-theory compactifications on Spin(7) holonomy manifolds, by performing a
Kaluza-Klein reduction.Comment: 19 pages, no figure
XMM-Newton Observations of Radio Pulsars B0834+06 and B0826-34 and Implications for Pulsar Inner Accelerator
We report the X-ray observations of two radio pulsars with drifting
subpulses: B0834 + 06 and B0826 - 34 using \xmm\. PSR B0834 + 06 was detected
with a total of 70 counts from the three EPIC instruments over 50 ks exposure
time. Its spectrum was best described as that of a blackbody (BB) with
temperature K and bolometric luminosity
of erg s. As it is typical in
pulsars with BB thermal components in their X-ray spectra, the hot spot surface
area is much smaller than that of the canonical polar cap, implying a
non-dipolar surface magnetic field much stronger than the dipolar component
derived from the pulsar spin-down (in this case about 50 times smaller and
stronger, respectively). The second pulsar PSR B0826 - 34 was not detected over
50 ks exposure time, giving an upper limit for the bolometric luminosity erg s. We use these data as well as the radio
emission data concerned with drifting subpulses to test the Partially Screened
Gap (PSG) model of the inner accelerator in pulsars.Comment: Accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journa
The Politicization of Judicial Elections and Its Effect on Judicial Independence
This article presents the proceedings of the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Symposium, The Politicization of Judicial Elections and Its Effect on Judicial Independence and LGBT Rights, held October 21, 2011. The idea for the conference stemmed from the November 2010 Iowa judicial election, in which three justices were voted out of office as a result of joining a unanimous ruling, Varnum v. Brien, that struck down, on equal protection grounds, a state statute limiting marriage rights to heterosexual couples. The conference addresses whether the backlash that occurred in Iowa after the Varnum decision might undermine judicial independence in jurisdictions where judges are elected. Daniel Takoji, professor of law at the Ohio State University\u27s Moritz College of Law, discusses, the role of money in judicial elections and more broadly its effect on judicial independence. Cleveland-Marshall College of Law Professor Susan Becker provides an overview of the struggle for LGBT rights, and discusses various factors that likely have influenced and will continue to influence judicial independence when addressing LGBT rights. Camilla Taylor, of Lambda Legal, who successfully litigated the Varnum decision through the Iowa courts, discusses her efforts in Iowa prior to litigating the Varnum case and whether the backlash that occurred after Varnum might affect Lambda\u27s efforts to challenge laws affecting LGBT rights in other states where judges are elected. The Hon. Marsha K. Temus recounts her experience and offers her unique perspective on whether politicized judicial elections might undermine judicial independence

Conservative management of a grade V injury to an ectopic pelvic kidney following blunt trauma to the lower abdomen: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Ectopic pelvic kidneys represent an anatomic variant that remains clinically asymptomatic in most patients. While there is some literature to suggest that ectopic kidneys may be more predisposed to blunt trauma injuries, there are few examples to guide the management of these injuries. To our knowledge, we present the first case of a grade V renal injury to an ectopic pelvic kidney managed successfully with conservative measures.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>We present a case of grade V renal injury to an ectopic pelvic kidney in a 21 year-old African-American male. The clinical and radiographic findings are presented, along with the patient's conservative hospital course.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We suggest that management of grade V renal injuries to ectopic pelvic kidneys can be treated similarly to that of kidneys in normal anatomic position. Conservative measures may be considered in properly selected patients.</p
Probing Density Fluctuations using the FIRST Radio Survey
We use results of angular clustering measurements in 3000 sq. deg's of the
FIRST radio survey to infer information on spatial clustering. Measurements are
compared with CDM-model predictions. Clustering of FIRST sources with optical
ID's in the APM catalog are also investigated. Finally, we outline a

Compactifications of Heterotic Theory on Non-Kahler Complex Manifolds: I
We study new compactifications of the SO(32) heterotic string theory on
compact complex non-Kahler manifolds. These manifolds have many interesting
features like fewer moduli, torsional constraints, vanishing Euler character
and vanishing first Chern class, which make the four-dimensional theory
phenomenologically attractive. We take a particular compact example studied
earlier and determine various geometrical properties of it. In particular we
calculate the warp factor and study the sigma model description of strings
propagating on these backgrounds. The anomaly cancellation condition and
enhanced gauge symmetry are shown to arise naturally in this framework, if one
considers the effect of singularities carefully.
We then give a detailed mathematical analysis of these manifolds and
construct a large class of them. The existence of a holomorphic (3,0) form is
important for the construction. We clarify some of the topological properties
of these manifolds and evaluate the Betti numbers. We also determine the
superpotential and argue that the radial modulus of these manifolds can

Compactification with Flux on K3 and Tori
We study compactifications of Type IIB string theory on a K3 \times T^2/Z_2
orientifold in the presence of RR and NS flux. We find the most general
supersymmetry preserving, Poincare invariant, vacua in this model. All the
complex structure moduli and some of the Kahler moduli are stabilised in these
vacua. We obtain in an explicit fashion the restrictions imposed by
supersymmetry on the flux, and the values of the fixed moduli. Some T-duals and
Heterotic duals are also discussed, these are non-Calabi-Yau spaces. A

Anti-phase synchronization of phase-reduced oscillators using open-loop control
In this letter, we present an elegant method to build and maintain an
anti-phase configuration of two nonlinear oscillators with different natural
frequencies and dynamics described by the sinusoidal phase-reduced model. The
anti-phase synchronization is achieved using a common input that couples the
oscillators and consists of a sequence of square pulses of appropriate
amplitude and duration. This example provides a proof of principle that
open-loop control can be used to create desired synchronization patterns for
nonlinear oscillators, when feedback is expensive or impossible to obtain
