    Eine interessante fossile Flora im tiefen Westfal D des Piesberges

    In dieser Arbeit wird die Begleitflora zu den nicht-marinen Muschelfunden des Piesberges bei Osnabrück, worüber in Band 24 dieser Mitteilungen berichtet wurde, näher untersucht und dargestellt. Die nicht-marinen Muscheln wurden z.T. direkt aus dem Hangenden des Flözes Dreibänke, zum anderen und grössten Teil aus einer nahegelegenen Halde geborgen. Aufgrund des Vorkommens von Neuropteris dussartii Laveine, Sphenopteris coemansii Andrae und Alethopteris davreuxii (Brongniart) Goeppert kann festgestellt werden, dass das Haldenmaterial aus dem untersten Teil des Westfal D stammt.The fossil plant remains of the Piesberg near Osnabrück, which were found together with the non-marine shells (published in volume 24 of this journal), were studied and documented. Few of the non-marine shells were collected directly from above coal seam Dreibänke. However, most of the shells were collected from a waste dump. Based on the occurrence of Neuropteris dussartii Laveine, Sphenopteris coemansii Andrae and Alethopteris davreuxii (Brongniart) Goeppert it is concluded that the material from the dump belongs to the lowermost Westphalian D

    Metal-Insulator Transition in the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model at Half-Filling with Lifetime Effects within the Moment Approach

    We explore the effect of the imaginary part of the self-energy, ImΣ(k,ω)Im\Sigma(\vec{k},\omega), having a single pole, Ω(k,ω)\Omega(\vec{k},\omega), with spectral weight, α(k)\alpha(\vec{k}), and quasi-particle lifetime, Γ(k)\Gamma(\vec{k}), on the density of states. We solve the set of parameters, Ω(k,ω\Omega(\vec{k},\omega), α(k)\alpha(\vec{k}), and Γ(k)\Gamma(\vec{k}) by means of the moment approach (exact sum rules) of Nolting. Our choice for Σ(k,ω)\Sigma(k,\omega), satisfies the Kramers - Kronig relationship automatically. Due to our choice of the self - energy, the system is not a Fermi liquid for any value of the interaction, a result which is also true in the moment approach of Nolting without lifetime effects. By increasing the value of the local interaction, U/WU/W, at half-filling (ρ=1/2\rho = 1/2), we go from a paramagnetic metal to a paramagnetic insulator, (Mott metal - insulator transition (MMITMMIT)) for values of U/WU/W of the order of U/W1U/W \geq 1 (WW is the band width) which is in agreement with numerical results for finite lattices and for infinity dimensions (D=D = \infty). These results settle down the main weakness of the spherical approximation of Nolting: a finite gap for any finite value of the interaction, i.e., an insulator for any finite value of U/WU/W. Lifetime effects are absolutely indispensable. Our scheme works better than the one of improving the narrowing band factor, B(k)B(\vec{k}), beyond the spherical approximation of Nolting.Comment: 5 pages and 5 ps figures (included

    Selenium content in soils from Murcia Region (SE, Spain)

    The objective of this study was to determine the selenium content in soils from the Region of Murcia (SE, Spain) and to study the possible relationship between mineralogical composition, soil properties and selenium content. In addition, generic reference level (GRL) for selenium was determined according to Spanish legislation. For this study, 490 samples were selected in areas subjected to agricultural activity or abandoned agricultural soils with natural vegetation. Five different zones were established in order to study selenium variability. Four different mineralogical groups were established, based on significant relationship with the mineralogical composition, and each sample was included in one mineralogical group. The results showed that the concentration of selenium is correlated with the electrical conductivity, sulphate content and with the mineralogical composition, particularly positively with quartz and in a negative way with calcite percentage. In addition, selenium level was positively correlated with the phyllosilicate content. Established GRL for selenium varies with the mineralogical group, having a great transcendence from the legal and economic points of view

    Reliability, validity and psychometric properties of the Greek translation of the Major Depression Inventory

    BACKGROUND: The Major Depression Inventory (MDI) is a brief self-rating scale for the assessment of depression. It is reported to be valid because it is based on the universe of symptoms of DSM-IV and ICD-10 depression. The aim of the current preliminary study was to assess the reliability, validity and psychometric properties of the Greek translation of the MDI. METHODS: 30 depressed patients of mean age 23.41 (± 5.77) years, and 68 controls patients of mean age 25.08 (± 11.42) years, entered the study. In 18 of them, the instrument was re-applied 1–2 days later and the Translation and Back Translation made. Clinical diagnosis was reached with the use of the SCAN v.2.0 and the International Personality Disorders Examination (IPDE). The Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) and the Zung Depression Rating Scale (ZDRS) were applied for cross-validation purposes. Statistical analysis included ANOVA, the Spearman Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, Principal Components Analysis and the calculation of Cronbach's α. RESULTS: Sensitivity and specificity were 0.86 and 0.94, respectively, at 26/27. Cronbach's α for the total scale was equal to 0.89. The Spearman's rho between MDI and CES-D was 0.86 and between MDI and ZDRS was 0.76. The factor analysis revealed two factors but the first accounted for 54% of variance while the second only for 9%. The test-retest reliability was excellent (Spearman's rho between 0.53 and 0.96 for individual items and 0.89 for total score). CONCLUSION: The current study provided preliminary evidence concerning the reliability and validity of the Greek translation of the MDI. Its properties are similar to those reported in the international literature, but further research is necessary

    Structure of a model dye/titania interface: Geometry of benzoate on rutile-TiO<sub>2 </sub>(110)(1×1)

    Scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction (PhD) and ab initio density functional theory calculations have been employed to investigate the adsorption geometry of benzoate ([C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>5</sub>COO]<sup>−</sup>) on rutile-TiO<sub>2</sub>(110)­(1 × 1). PhD data indicate that the benzoate moiety binds to the surface through both of its oxygen atoms to two adjacent fivefold surface titanium atoms in an essentially upright geometry. Moreover, its phenyl (C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>5</sub>−) and carboxylate ([−COO]<sup>−</sup>) groups are determined to be coplanar, being aligned along the [001] azimuth. This experimental result is consistent with the benzoate geometry emerging from DFT calculations conducted for laterally rather well-separated adsorbates. At shorter interadsorbate distances, the theoretical modeling predicts a more tilted and twisted adsorption geometry, where the phenyl and carboxylate groups are no longer coplanar; i.e., interadsorbate interactions influence the configuration of adsorbed benzoate

    An exploration of parents’ preferences for foot care in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: a possible role for the discrete choice experiment

    Background: An increased awareness of patients’ and parents’ care preferences regarding foot care is desirable from a clinical perspective as such information may be utilised to optimise care delivery. The aim of this study was to examine parents’ preferences for, and valuations of foot care and foot-related outcomes in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Methods: A discrete choice experiment (DCE) incorporating willingness-to-pay (WTP) questions was conducted by surveying 42 parents of children with JIA who were enrolled in a randomised-controlled trial of multidisciplinary foot care at a single UK paediatric rheumatology outpatients department. Attributes explored were: levels of pain; mobility; ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL); waiting time; referral route; and footwear. The DCE was administered at trial baseline. DCE data were analysed using a multinomial-logit-regression model to estimate preferences and relative importance of attributes of foot care. A stated-preference WTP question was presented to estimate parents’ monetary valuation of health and service improvements.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Results: Every attribute in the DCE was statistically significant (p &#60; 0.01) except that of cost (p = 0.118), suggesting that all attributes, except cost, have an impact on parents’ preferences for foot care for their child. The magnitudes of the coefficients indicate that the strength of preference for each attribute was (in descending order): improved ability to perform ADL, reductions in foot pain, improved mobility, improved ability to wear desired footwear, multidisciplinary foot care route, and reduced waiting time. Parents’ estimated mean annual WTP for a multidisciplinary foot care service was £1,119.05.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Conclusions: In terms of foot care service provision for children with JIA, parents appear to prefer improvements in health outcomes over non-health outcomes and service process attributes. Cost was relatively less important than other attributes suggesting that it does not appear to impact on parents’ preferences.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt

    Novel curcumin- and emodin-related compounds identified by in silico 2D/3D conformer screening induce apoptosis in tumor cells

    BACKGROUND: Inhibition of the COP9 signalosome (CSN) associated kinases CK2 and PKD by curcumin causes stabilization of the tumor suppressor p53. It has been shown that curcumin induces tumor cell death and apoptosis. Curcumin and emodin block the CSN-directed c-Jun signaling pathway, which results in diminished c-Jun steady state levels in HeLa cells. The aim of this work was to search for new CSN kinase inhibitors analogue to curcumin and emodin by means of an in silico screening method. METHODS: Here we present a novel method to identify efficient inhibitors of CSN-associated kinases. Using curcumin and emodin as lead structures an in silico screening with our in-house database containing more than 10(6 )structures was carried out. Thirty-five compounds were identified and further evaluated by the Lipinski's rule-of-five. Two groups of compounds can be clearly discriminated according to their structures: the curcumin-group and the emodin-group. The compounds were evaluated in in vitro kinase assays and in cell culture experiments. RESULTS: The data revealed 3 compounds of the curcumin-group (e.g. piceatannol) and 4 of the emodin-group (e.g. anthrachinone) as potent inhibitors of CSN-associated kinases. Identified agents increased p53 levels and induced apoptosis in tumor cells as determined by annexin V-FITC binding, DNA fragmentation and caspase activity assays. CONCLUSION: Our data demonstrate that the new in silico screening method is highly efficient for identifying potential anti-tumor drugs
