    Coherent Error Suppression in Multi-Qubit Entangling Gates

    We demonstrate a simple pulse shaping technique designed to improve the fidelity of spin-dependent force operations commonly used to implement entangling gates in trapped-ion systems. This extension of the M{\o}lmer-S{\o}rensen gate can theoretically suppress the effects of certain frequency and timing errors to any desired order and is demonstrated through Walsh modulation of a two-qubit entangling gate on trapped atomic ions. The technique is applicable to any system of qubits coupled through collective harmonic oscillator modes

    We use a Bi gaussmeter of micron dimensions to explore the magnetic field dependence of the magnetization relaxation rate and the critical current down to millikelvin temperatures in untwinned single crystals of YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-δ) with columnar defects. The response separates into three regimes as a function of the ratio of vortex density to columnar defect density B/B_φ: enhancements in both critical current and quantum creep in the dilute limit, vanishing magnetization relaxation at the matching density (the proposed "Mott insulator'' phase line), and the emergence of temperature-dependent vortex motion for B≫B_φ

    Variability of Pennsylvanian-Permian Carbonate Associations and Implications for NW Pangea Palaeogeography, East-Central British Columbia, Canada

    Different stages of Pennsylvanian-Permian carbonate sedimentation in east-central British Columbia record a complex history of changing environments influenced by evolving palaeogeography and climate. Newly recognized tectonically controlled features affected the distribution and variability of carbonate associations, providing new interpretations for this portion of the west coast of Pangea. Both a heterozoan (cool water) and photozoan (warm-water) association were identified on either side of a palaeogeographic high here informally termed “Tipinahokan Peninsula”. Cool water carbonates were located outboard, or to the west of this high, an area influenced by upwelling waters. Inboard of this high, a warm, protected sea developed, here termed “Kisosowin Sea”. This configuration and palaeolatitude is similar to that of Baja California, Mexico and the Sea of Cortéz, providing a good modern analog for these deposits where warm water carbonates grow at latitudes otherwise dominated by cool water deposits. The warm sea provided a place for a photozoan association to develop during the Permian when the low latitude NW coast of Pangea was dominated by cool water carbonates

    Local probe of vortex pinning energies in the Bose glass

    Columnar defects provide strong pinning centers for vortices in high-T_c superconductors, increasing global critical currents. Using a magnetometer array of micron dimensions, we characterize the local held profiles in untwinned single crystals of YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-δ) with equivalent columnar defect densities B_φ. We find that the critical current is large only where the internal magnetic field BB _ φ, the critical current is sharply reduced. We model both local and global critical current measurements by generalizing the Bean picture to the case of irradiated high-T_c superconductors

    Sr3CuPtxIr1-xO6 has been cited as an example of a one-dimensional quantum spin chain with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. We have measured the ac susceptibility of Sr3CuPtxIr1-xO6 with x=0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, and 0.7, in magnetic fields of 0–60 kOe, and at temperatures down to 0.275 K. Our data show that the x=endpoint Sr3CuIrO6, exhibits long-range ferromagnetic order at T=20.1 K, contrary to results from dc susceptibility studies which indicated that it remained a one-dimensional ferromagnet to below 4 K. When platinum is substituted for iridium, antiferromagnetic couplings are introduced, and the susceptibility shows a diminishing signature of the three-dimensional ferromagnetic transition. Furthermore, the low-temperature susceptibility exhibits peaks which appear and evolve as x is increased. These results lead to a rich phase diagram in temperature and Pt concentration space. We find that the behavior of Sr3CuPtxIr1-xO6 cannot be simply described by the random quantum spin chain theories that were developed, in part, to address this system

    Differences in Suicidality in Non–Treatment-Seeking and Treatment-Seeking Law Enforcement Officers: A Cross-sectional Study

    Objective: Law enforcement officers (LEOs) are exposed to high levels of occupational trauma and face added stress from heightened public scrutiny and COVID-19, which may result in suicide. It is crucial to understand differences between LEOs who seek treatment and those who do not. Method: We compared LEOs from the same greater metropolitan area who sought treatment with those who did not. Participants completed validated measures assessing posttraumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety, depression, and suicidality. Results: The treatment-seeking sample scores were higher on all standardized assessments. Bivariate logistic regression results indicated that the non–treatment-seeking sample\u27s odds of experiencing suicidality were 1.76 times the odds for the treatment seeking sample. Conclusions: This suggests that many LEOs experiencing suicidality may not be seeking treatment and highlights the role that posttraumatic stress disorder may play in determining whether LEOs seek treatment or not

    Spatio-temporal dynamics and plastic flow of vortices in superconductors with periodic arrays of pinning sites

    We present simulations of flux-gradient-driven superconducting rigid vortices interacting with square and triangular arrays of columnar pinning sites in an increasing external magnetic field. These simulations allow us to quantitatively relate spatio-temporal microscopic information of the vortex lattice with typically measured macroscopic quantities, such as the magnetization M(H)M(H). The flux lattice does not become completely commensurate with the pinning sites throughout the sample at the magnetization matching peaks, but forms a commensurate lattice in a region close to the edge of the sample. Matching fields related to unstable vortex configurations do not produce peaks in M(H)M(H). We observe a variety of evolving complex flux profiles, including flat terraces or plateaus separated by winding current-carrying strings and, near the peaks in M(H)M(H), plateaus only in certain regions, which move through the sample as the field increases
