Can the 4th Industrial Revolution be a Solution to the Challenges of Social Aging?

    Get PDF
This paper explores whether the fourth industrial revolution - robotization automation digitalization and the Internet of Things - may mitigate the social economic and labor impacts of an aging society The increasing role of advanced technologies in economic and social life has fueled concerns about the risks of such technologies to human labor social relations and human dignity These risks seem particularly tangible in advanced societies which face a shortage of skilled labor and increasing demand for social and care services By reviewing a variety of business practices in several developed economies this research seeks to build a case in favor of the use of advanced technologies in aging societies Taking into account the scale of population aging and the limited effectiveness of social and fiscal reforms in favor of a demographic change the fourth industrial revolution appears to be a useful tool to tackle social aging Without dismissing the ethical social and other concerns related to the use of advanced technologies the research shows a wide range of successful solutions and symbiotic collaboration between humans and advanced technologies in socially aging context

This paper explores the axiological convergence between classical liberalism and Catholic Social Thought CST The paper argues that CST and classical liberals should build on their complementary values to strengthen public support for liberal democracy and a free-market economy among Catholic voters and in society at large Although populist regimes in particular far-right conservative nationalists portray liberalism as an antithesis of Catholicism this paper shows that there is a broad consensus between the two traditions digitalization and the Internet of Things - may mitigate the social economic and labor impacts of an aging societ

The project was an investigation into how the University of Sheffield Library can better support teaching with primary sources, through in-depth interview with current practitioners. It has generated a rich understanding of teacher needs and allows recommendations to be made for how the University Library can support such teaching going forward

Co-Designing a Programme Level Approach to Information and Digital Literacy: Initial Reflections from Our Participatory Action Research Project

    Get PDF
Information and digital literacy (IDL) is a core graduate attribute at the University of Sheffield and is defined as follows: “Information and digital literacy (IDL) enables engaged learning. It blends information literacies with digital capabilities transcending technological skills and tools to identify with learning, living and working in a fluid digital world. IDL enables learners to discover and absorb information in a critically engaged manner, innovate in active pursuits of creative scholarship, demonstrate integrity by acknowledging the work of others and make a contribution for others to share” [University of Sheffield Library, 2019]. This paper will present initial reflections from an innovative participatory action research project established at the University, to bring a team of student associates together with a team of faculty liaison librarians to co-build and co-embed a programme level approach (PLA) to IDL. PLA takes a holistic rather than modular approach to learning and teaching, allowing students to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes that will make them confident and assured graduates. The University has set an ambitious five-year strategic vision to ensure every course has a programme level approach by the year 2021 [University of Sheffield, 2016]. US based librarians Susan Gardner Archambault & Jennifer Masunaga [2015] maintain that libraries can contribute to such ambitious programme level approaches by taking the initiative and by working with academic and administrative staff to map information (and digital) literacy into the curriculum. Our work aims to build on this by also including the student voice in our mapping work, taking a participatory action research approach [Heron & Reason, 2008] to engage, include and embrace the student experience. The success and impact of this work will be assessed through staff and student reflections and we will draw on these to present success to date, at the IATUL 2019 annual conference

The aim of this study was to identify the main contemporary global trends of choreographic art at the beginning of the XXI century and illustrate the practical aspects of existing trends in world choreography through a questionnaire survey. This practical study was conducted through an online questionnaire survey among 52 acting choreographers, members of the National Choreographic Union of Ukraine, 92 students of the Faculty of Choreographic Arts of the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts, and 34 scholars in the field of art history conducting research work within the activities of choreographic art of Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts. Based on the study results, the main features of modern choreography according to the respondents were: improvisation in dance forms; synthesis of ballet tradition with dance innovations; the latest forms of interaction between choreography and other art forms, including synthesis, symbiosis, concentration, and transfer; synthesis of all genres of choreographic art; combination of other art forms (fine arts, theater, and cinema). The respondents were of the opinion that the understanding and use in the choreographic activities of the XXI century person image are designed, not only to have a mutual influence on the elements of socio-cultural space of different countries, but also to determine the trends of future social transformations. Also, choreographic art spreads a new social content in the created human choreographic images of the XXI century due to the specific features of the choreographic manner. In conclusion, contemporary choreographic art is a striking combination of different dance techniques and traditions. Careful research and analysis of this field will contribute to the formation and development of new forms of dance art in the future

Rapid changes in the modern world economic and political, and, accordingly, the educational system, actualize studying the issues related to the role, importance and principles of the organization of work of higher educational institutions. A decrease in students’ motivation to acquire knowledge is an important problem of the modern educational system. Achieving high educational motivation is possible only on the condition of understanding its essence and effective mechanisms of development. The purpose of the academic paper lies in analysing the viewpoints of various scientists regarding the specifics of the motivation of students studying choreography in the conditions of modern military conflicts, as well as in practically investigating the main aspects of the motivation of the training process of students – choreographers in the conditions of military operations. Results. Based on the results of the research, the viewpoints of scientists regarding the educational motivation of students – choreographers in the conditions of military conflicts have been established, and the practical aspects of the motivation of students of this professional field during military conflicts have been clarified

Phase diagram and magnetocaloric effect of CoMnGe_{1-x}Sn_{x} alloys

We propose the phase diagram of a new pseudo-ternary compound, CoMnGe_{1-x}Sn_{x}, in the range x less than or equal to 0.1. Our phase diagram is a result of magnetic and calometric measurements. We demonstrate the appearance of a hysteretic magnetostructural phase transition in the range x=0.04 to x=0.055, similar to that observed in CoMnGe under hydrostatic pressure. From magnetisation measurements, we show that the isothermal entropy change associated with the magnetostructural transition can be as high as 4.5 J/(K kg) in a field of 1 Tesla. However, the large thermal hysteresis in this transition (~20 K) will limit its straightforward use in a magnetocaloric device.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
