Excavatory notes on the style of interior monologue in the Polish translation of Joyce’s "Ulysses"

    Get PDF
The article analyses the style of James Joyce’s interior monologue in ULYSSES and shows the degree of difficulty faced by translators, connected with the blending of third person narrative and free indirect speech exploiting features of colloquial spoken language in a written text. The resultant inexplicitness due to associative gaps and sparse punctuation affects interpretation of the text, as revealed in some problems identified in Maciej Słomczyński’s translation of ULYSSES into Polish. Due to morphosyntactic, lexical, and orthographic contrasts between the language of the original text, English, and the language of the translation, Polish, many nuanced meanings of the original text are ironed out in translation

    A half-formed thing, a fully formed style : repetition in Eimear McBride’s "A girl is a half-formed thing"

McBride stosuje retoryczne warianty ‘conduplicatio’, tworząc nasycony emocjonalnie anty-Bildungsroman opowiadający o kochającej siostrze i umierającym bracie, seksualnym wykorzystywaniu dziewczyny przez wuja i jej samobójstwie. Mimo pewnych podobieństw tematycznych i eksperymentów językowych „A Girl” nosi jedynie powierzchowne podobieństwo do twórczości modernistycznego klasyka, o czym dodatkowo świadczą wyniki badań stylometrycznych. The article begins with addressing alleged similarities between Eimear McBride’s debut novel "A Girl Is a Half-Formed Thing" and James Joyce’s works to suggest that they cannot be systematically sustained. Her much praised, experimental style relies on the opposite of Joycean richness. Limited vocabulary, jumbled word order, and lexical and phrasal repetitions are one of the most salient features of her style. McBride applies rhetorical variants of conduplicatio to create an emotionally powerful idiom to narrate an anti-Bildungsroman about a loving sister and her dying brother, her sexual abuse by an uncle and final suicide. So despite some thematic parallels, and linguistic experimentation, "A Girl" bears only superficial resemblance to the modernist master, which is additionally evidenced by stylometric findings

Wywiad z twórcami filmu dokumentalnego pt. "Land without God" (Kraina bez Boga) Gerardem Mannixem Flynnem i Maedhbh McMahon. Film opowiada historię jednej z robotniczych rodzin, której czternastu członków przeszło przez kilka „poprawczaków” i tzw. "szkół przemysłowych", gdzie doświadczyli brutalnego traktowania i wykorzystywanie seksualnego. Wywiad wyjaśnia, w jaki sposób film oddaje głos ocalałym, którzy wreszcie mają szansę opowiedzieć własnymi słowami koszmar, przez który przeszli, i jak systemowa przemoc wpłynęła na ich życie. The interview with the authors of a documentary "Land Without God" Gerard Mannix Flynn, and Maedhbh McMahon, which tells a story of one working-class family whose fourteen members went through several “reform” and industrial schools, where they suffered from brutal treatment and sexual abuse. The interview disucsses how the documentary gives voice to survivors who are finally able to tell in their own words what happened to them, and how the systemic violence has affected their life

Terrestrial Laser Scanning 3D as a useful method for monitoring urban areas endangered by landslides

Landslides are a serious problem in Poland in recent years. Starting from catastrophic landslide events in 1990s, systematically is increased risk of landslides hazard on urbanized areas. However, many  of Polish landslides are slow-moving, so potential terrain instability is often difficult to observe or it is easy to neglect (Mrozek et al.). In the analysis of landslides (predicting, monitoring and alerting for early warning, monitoring for change detection, etc.) a variety of geomatic techniques can be used. One of the most innovative is Terrestrial Laser scanner 3D. Terrestrial Laser Scanning, usually adopted in industry, could be successfully applied for deformation monitoring of the landslide. This technique give a great contribution to the knowledge of both the surface shape and the kinematics of landslides by providing data which are used from geologists, geomorphologists and geotechnics for interpreting the phenomenon. Such a methodology offers the advantages typical of noncontact techniques, and moreover permits to collect in short time dense 3D point clouds over the surface of interest, to record a perspective image (intensity data and sometimes RGB data), it doesn’t requires necessarily deployment of reflectors, and it permits immediately and easily to take measurements between points (Bitelli et al. 2004). The acquired points clouds data have to be connected together in order to reconstruct the continuous surface of the landslide, so they are automatically aligned during the survey and merged by the software, which permits to create polygonal surfaces and to map the surface with textures using digital photos obtained during the scanning by a digital semi-metric camera placed over the laser instrument (Barbarella and Fiani 2012). The Terrestrial Laser Scanner allow us to survey in a very fast, efficient and precise way. It could be very useful because of their ability to describe in details the geometry of objects. In the analysis of the temporal evolution of landslides and of related hydrogeological hazards, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) seems to be a very suitable technique for morphological description and displacement analysis. Monitoring in general can be regarded as the regular observation and recording of activities taking place in a certain structure. It is a process of gathering information on all aspects of the object (Pilecka and Bazarnik 2015). Deformation monitoring and gathering measured values is a major component for further calculation of soil and rock stability, deformation analysis, prediction and alert.

    Verbo-visual rhetoric of Belfast murals

Belfast murals are one of the landmarks of the city. They constitute a peculiar medium of communications, mixing word and image in a powerful ideological message. They express highly emotional content, and have been addressed to original target audiences of republicans and loyalists. In this respect they have served to reflect and influence sentiments of the communities involved in the conflict, and as a communal memoir commemorating crucial events, thereby contributing to their ethnic identity formations. However, as Northern Ireland has been undergoing the peace process, the murals are becoming one of the city’s tourist attractions. As such, they are encountered by audiences unaware of intricacies and nuances of local history. This paper examines how their complex verbo-visual rhetoric affects this type of audience, and how, in a reciprocal process, political tourism may have an impact on the murals’ style and content.

Quantifying origin and character of long-range correlations in narrative texts

In natural language using short sentences is considered efficient for communication. However, a text composed exclusively of such sentences looks technical and reads boring. A text composed of long ones, on the other hand, demands significantly more effort for comprehension. Studying characteristics of the sentence length variability (SLV) in a large corpus of world-famous literary texts shows that an appealing and aesthetic optimum appears somewhere in between and involves selfsimilar, cascade-like alternation of various lengths sentences. A related quantitative observation is that the power spectra S(f) of thus characterized SLV universally develop a convincing `1/f^beta' scaling with the average exponent beta =~ 1/2, close to what has been identified before in musical compositions or in the brain waves. An overwhelming majority of the studied texts simply obeys such fractal attributes but especially spectacular in this respect are hypertext-like, "stream of consciousness" novels. In addition, they appear to develop structures characteristic of irreducibly interwoven sets of fractals called multifractals. Scaling of S(f) in the present context implies existence of the long-range correlations in texts and appearance of multifractality indicates that they carry even a nonlinear component. A distinct role of the full stops in inducing the long-range correlations in texts is evidenced by the fact that the above quantitative characteristics on the long-range correlations manifest themselves in variation of the full stops recurrence times along texts, thus in SLV, but to a much lesser degree in the recurrence times of the most frequent words. In this latter case the nonlinear correlations, thus multifractality, disappear even completely for all the texts considered. Treated as one extra word, the full stops at the same time appear to obey the Zipfian rank-frequency distribution, however.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Information Science
