Strengths and weaknesses of inviting men to a voluntary-based domestic violence intervention
This study examines the factors motivating domestic violence perpetrators to participate in a voluntary-based intervention program. The experiences and determining factors around men’s positive and negative responses to this invitation were examined through semi-structured interviews with professionals, observations, and reflexive notes during the first meeting with 29 men. Two major themes emerged from the thematic analysis: the factors making men more likely to attend the first meeting or resisting the group intervention. These findings can help professionals recognize the challenges of inviting perpetrators to interventions, especially in countries with insufficient laws for mandated domestic violence perpetrator programs. The paper discusses the importance during the first meeting of building rapport and trust and recognizing complex family histories to encourage voluntary attendance and intervention engagement

Bioactivities of Ethanolic Extract and its Fractions of Cistus laurifolius L. (Cistaceae) and Salvia wiedemannii Boiss. (Lamiaceae) Species
Background: Cistus laurifolius L. (Cistaceae) and Salvia wiedemannii
Boiss. (Lamiaceae) have been used for treatment of some illnesses in
Turkish folk medicine. In the present study, the ethanolic extract and
its fractions obtained using re-extraction by hexane (Hx), chloroform
(CHCl3), butanol, and remaining-water (r-H2O) of C. laurifolius were
screened for their in vitro bioactivities. Materials and Methods:
Activities were determined against both standard and the isolated
strains of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis,
Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Staphylococcus aureus,
Enterococcus faecalis, as well as yeasts such as Candida albicans and
Candida parapsilosis by microdilution method. Also, antiviral activity
of C. laurifolius and S. wiedemannii extracts were tested on herpes
simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and parainfluenza-3 (PI-3) using Madin-Darby
bovine kidney and vero cell lines. Results: Tested extracts of C.
laurifolius (minimum inhibitory concentration 32 mu g/mL) exerted a
strong antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria of E. coli,
P. mirabilis, K. pneumoniae, and A. baumannii. Conclusion: The Hx
extract of C. laurifolius (cytopathogenic effect of 32-8 mu g/mL) had
antiviral activity on PI-3. Also, the r-H2O, CHCl3, and ethanol extracts
(16-<0.25 mu g/mL) of S. wiedemannii had significant antiviral activity
on HSV-1, same as control
BOZCAADA' DA (ÇANAKKALE) SOĞUCAK FORMASYONU' NDA SAPTANAN YENİ PALEONTOLOJİK VE SEDİMANTOLOJIK BULGULAR
Trakya
Hypoglycaemic Effect of Seed and Fruit Extracts of Laurel Cherry in Different Experimental Models and Chemical Characterization of the Seed Extract
Laurel cherry (Prunus laurocerasus L.), an evergreen tree from Rosaceae
family, is used as a folk medicine for various medical purposes and
against diabetes as well in Northern Anatolia. The present study was
performed to evaluate in-vivo hypoglycaemic and antidiabetic activities
of P. laurocerasus. Hypoglycaemic effect of ethanol extracts of the
fruit and seeds were tested on normoglycaemic, glucose loaded and
streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. The extracts were given orally to
rats and blood glucose levels were determined according to the glucose
oxidase method. The results indicated that seed extract showed 20\%
inhibition on blood glucose levels on experimental diabetic animals
Chemical composition of the bioactive seed extract was analyzed by
GC-MS. Oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids were detected as the major
components of this extract. Therefore, hypoglycaemic activity of the
seeds may be arisen from unsaturated fatty acids
The Cell Surface NADH Oxidase ENOX2 Is Highly Expressed in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML): a Redox Protein As a Secreted Surrogate Biomarker and Druggable Target
ENOX2 NADH Oxidase: A BCR-ABL1-Dependent Cell Surface and Secreted Redox Protein in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia
Objective: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a disease caused by the acquisition of BCR-ABL1 fusion in hematopoietic stem cells. In this study, we focus on the oncofetal ENOX2 protein as a potential secretable biomarker in CML.
Materials and Methods: We used cell culture, western blot, quantitative RT-PCR, ELISA, transcriptome analyses, and bioinformatics techniques to investigate ENOX2 mRNA and protein expression.
Results: Western blot analyses of UT-7 and TET-inducible Ba/F3 cell lines demonstrated the upregulation of the ENOX2 protein. BCR-ABL1 was found to induce ENOX2 overexpression in a kinase-dependent manner. We confirmed increased ENOX2 mRNA expression in a cohort of CML patients at diagnosis. In a series of CML patients, ELISA assays showed a highly significant increase of ENOX2 protein levels in the plasma of patients with CML compared to controls. Reanalyzing the transcriptomic dataset confirmed ENOX2 mRNA overexpression in the chronic phase of the disease. Bioinformatic analyses identified several genes whose mRNA expressions were positively correlated with ENOX2 in the context of BCR-ABL1. Some of them encode proteins involved in cellular functions compatible with the growth deregulation observed in CML.
Conclusion: Our results highlight the upregulation of a secreted redox protein in a BCR-ABL1-dependent manner in CML. The data presented here suggest that ENOX2, through its transcriptional mechanism, plays a significant role in BCR-ABL1 leukemogenesis
