Assumptions of the primordial spectrum and cosmological parameter estimation
The observables of the perturbed universe, CMB anisotropy and large
structures, depend on a set of cosmological parameters, as well as, the assumed
nature of primordial perturbations. In particular, the shape of the primordial
power spectrum (PPS) is, at best, a well motivated assumption. It is known that
the assumed functional form of the PPS in cosmological parameter estimation can
affect the best fit parameters and their relative confidence limits. In this
paper, we demonstrate that a specific assumed form actually drives the best fit
parameters into distinct basins of likelihood in the space of cosmological
parameters where the likelihood resists improvement via modifications to the
PPS. The regions where considerably better likelihoods are obtained allowing
free form PPS lie outside these basins. In the absence of a preferred model of
inflation, this raises a concern that current cosmological parameters estimates
are strongly prejudiced by the assumed form of PPS. Our results strongly
motivate approaches toward simultaneous estimation of the cosmological
parameters and the shape of the primordial spectrum from upcoming cosmological
data. It is equally important for theorists to keep an open mind towards early
universe scenarios that produce features in the PPS.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, discussions extended, main results unchanged,

Humanism in the Age of COVID-19: Renewing Focus on Communication and Compassion
The global COVID-19 pandemic has become one of the largest clinical and operational challenges faced by emergency medicine, and our EDs continue to see increased volumes of infected patients, many of whom are not only ill, but acutely aware and fearful of their circumstances and potential mortality. Given this, there may be no more important time to focus on staff-patient communication and expression of compassion. However, many of the techniques usually employed by emergency clinicians to provide comfort to patients and their families are made more challenging or impossible by the current circumstances. Geriatric ED patients, who are at increased risk of severe disease, are particularly vulnerable to the effects of isolation.Despite many challenges, emergency clinicians have at their disposal a myriad of tools that can still be used to express compassion and empathy to their patients. Placing emphasis on using these techniques to maximize humanism in the care of COVID-19 patients during this crisis has the potential to bring improvements to ED patient care well after this pandemic has passed
Multi-spin dynamics of the solid-state NMR Free Induction Decay
We present a new experimental investigation of the NMR free induction decay
(FID) in a lattice of spin-1/2 nuclei in a strong Zeeman field. Following a
pi/2 pulse, evolution under the secular dipolar Hamiltonian preserves coherence
number in the Zeeman eigenbasis, but changes the number of correlated spins in
the state. The observed signal is seen to decay as single-spin, single-quantum
coherences evolve into multiple-spin coherences under the action of the dipolar
Hamiltonian. In order to probe the multiple-spin dynamics during the FID, we
measured the growth of coherence orders in a basis other than the usual Zeeman
eigenbasis. This measurement provides the first direct experimental observation
of the growth of coherent multiple-spin correlations during the FID.
Experiments were performed with a cubic lattice of spins (19F in calcium
fluoride) and a linear spin chain (19F in fluorapatite). It is seen that the
geometrical arrangement of the spins plays a significant role in the
development of higher order correlations. The results are discussed in light of
existing theoretical models.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
A Novel Use of Light Guides and Wavelength Shifting Plates for the Detection of Scintillation Photons in Large Liquid Argon Detectors
Scintillation light generated as charged particles traverse large liquid
argon detectors adds valuable information to studies of weakly-interacting
particles. This paper uses both laboratory measurements and cosmic ray data
from the Blanche dewar facility at Fermilab to characterize the efficiency of
the photon detector technology developed at Indiana University for the single
phase far detector of DUNE. The efficiency of this technology was found to be
0.48% at the readout end when the detector components were characterized with
laboratory measurements. A second determination of the efficiency using cosmic
ray tracks is in reasonable agreement with the laboratory determination. The
agreement of these two efficiency determinations supports the result that
minimum ionizing muons generate photons/MeV as
they cross the LAr volume.Comment: Accepted version (without final editorial corrections
The Galaxy Angular Correlation Functions and Power Spectrum from the Two Micron All Sky Survey
We calculate the angular correlation function of galaxies in the Two Micron
All Sky Survey. We minimize the possible contamination by stars, dust, seeing
and sky brightness by studying their cross correlation with galaxy density, and
limiting the galaxy sample accordingly. We measure the correlation function at
scales between 1-18 arcdegs using a half million galaxies. We find a best fit
power law to the correlation function has a slope of 0.76 and an amplitude of
0.11. However, there are statistically significant oscillations around this
power law. The largest oscillation occurs at about 0.8 degrees, corresponding
to 2.8 h^{-1} Mpc at the median redshift of our survey, as expected in halo
occupation distribution descriptions of galaxy clustering.
We invert the angular correlation function using Singular Value Decomposition
to measure the three-dimensional power spectrum and find that it too is in good
agreement with previous measurements. A dip seen in the power spectrum at small
wavenumber k is statistically consistent with CDM-type power spectra. A fit of
CDM-type power spectra to k < 0.2 h Mpc^{-1} give constraints of
\Gamma_{eff}=0.116 and \sigma_8=0.96. This suggest a K_s-band linear bias of
1.1+/-0.2. This \Gamma_{eff} is different from the WMAP CMB derived value. On
small scales the power-law shape of our power spectrum is shallower than that
derived for the SDSS. These facts together imply a biasing of these different
galaxies that might be nonlinear, that might be either waveband or luminosity
dependent, and that might have a nonlocal origin.Comment: 14 pages, 20 figures, to be published in ApJ January 20th, revision

The Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect: simulation and observation
The Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect (SZ effect) is a complete probe of ionized
baryons, the majority of which are likely hiding in the intergalactic medium.
We ran a CDM simulation using a moving mesh hydro code to
compute the statistics of the thermal and kinetic SZ effect such as the power
spectra and measures of non-Gaussianity. The thermal SZ power spectrum has a
very broad peak at multipole with temperature fluctuations
K. The power spectrum is consistent with available
observations and suggests a high and a possible role of
non-gravitational heating. The non-Gaussianity is significant and increases the
cosmic variance of the power spectrum by a factor of for .
We explore optimal driftscan survey strategies for the AMIBA CMB
interferometer and their dependence on cosmology. For SZ power spectrum
estimation, we find that the optimal sky coverage for a 1000 hours of
integration time is several hundred square degrees. One achieves an accuracy
better than 40% in the SZ measurement of power spectrum and an accuracy better
than 20% in the cross correlation with Sloan galaxies for . For
cluster searches, the optimal scan rate is around 280 hours per square degree
with a cluster detection rate 1 every 7 hours, allowing for a false positive
rate of 20% and better than 30% accuracy in the cluster SZ distribution
function measurement.Comment: 34 pages, 20 figures. Submitted to ApJ. Simulation maps have been
