    Dynamic charge inhomogenity in cuprate superconductors

    The inelastic x-ray scattering spectrum for phonons of Δ1\Delta_{1}-symmetry including the CuO bond-stretching phonon dispersion is analyzed by a Lorentz fit in HgBa2_{2}CuO4_{4} and Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CuO6_{6}, respectively, using recently calculated phonon frequencies as input parameters. The resulting mode frequencies of the fit are almost all in good agreement with the calculated data. An exception is the second highest Δ1\Delta_{1}-branch compromising the bond-stretching modes which disagrees in both compounds with the calculations. This branch unlike the calculations shows an anomalous softening with a minimum around the wavevector \vc{q}=\frac{2\pi}{a}(0.25, 0, 0). Such a disparity with the calculated results, that are based on the assumption of an undisturbed translation- and point group invariant electronic structure of the CuO plane, indicates some {\it static} charge inhomogenities in the measured probes. Most likely these will be charge stripes along the CuO bonds which have the strongest coupling to certain longitudinal bond-stretching modes that in turn selfconsistently induce corresponding {\it dynamic} charge inhomogenities. The symmetry breaking by the mix of dynamic and static charge inhomogenities can lead to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface into small pockets.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

    Performance Models for Data Transfers: A Case Study with Molecular Chemistry Kernels

    With increasing complexity of hardwares, systems with different memory nodes are ubiquitous in High Performance Computing (HPC). It is paramount to develop strategies to overlap the data transfers between memory nodes with computations in order to exploit the full potential of these systems. In this article, we consider the problem of deciding the order of data transfers between two memory nodes for a set of independent tasks with the objective to minimize the makespan. We prove that with limited memory capacity, obtaining the optimal order of data transfers is a NP-complete problem. We propose several heuristics for this problem and provide details about their favorable situations. We present an analysis of our heuristics on traces, obtained by running 2 molecular chemistry kernels, namely, Hartree-Fock (HF) and Coupled Cluster Single Double (CCSD) on 10 nodes of an HPC system. Our results show that some of our heuristics achieve significant overlap for moderate memory capacities and are very close to the lower bound of makespan

    The experiment design, data acquisition and preprocessing, data base management, analysis results and development of instrumentation for the AgRISTARS Supporting Research Project, Field Research task are described. Results of several investigations on the spectral reflectance of corn and soybean canopies as influenced by cultural practices, development stage and nitrogen nutrition are reported as well as results of analyses of the spectral properties of crop canopies as a function of canopy geometry, row orientation, sensor view angle and solar illumination angle are presented. The objectives, experiment designs and data acquired in 1980 for field research experiments are described. The development and performance characteristics of a prototype multiband radiometer, data logger, and aerial tower for field research are discussed

    Vegetation and soils field research data base: Experiment summaries

    Understanding of the relationships between the optical, spectral characteristics and important biological-physical parameters of earth-surface features can best be obtained by carefully controlled studies over fields and plots where complete data describing the condition of targets are attainable and where frequent, timely spectral measurement can be obtained. Development of a vegetation and soils field research data base was initiated in 1972 at Purdue University's Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing and expanded in the fall of 1974 by NASA as part of LACIE. Since then, over 250,000 truck-mounted and helicopter-borne spectrometer/multiband radiometer observations have been obtained of more than 50 soil series and 20 species of crops, grasses, and trees. These data are supplemented by an extensive set of biophysical and meteorological data acquired during each mission. The field research data form one of the most complete and best-documented data sets acquired for agricultural remote sensing research. Thus, they are well-suited to serve as a data base for research to: (1) quantiatively determine the relationships of spectral and biophysical characteristics of vegetation, (2) define future sensor systems, and (3) develop advanced data analysis techniques

    Maximized Posteriori Attributes Selection from Facial Salient Landmarks for Face Recognition

    This paper presents a robust and dynamic face recognition technique based on the extraction and matching of devised probabilistic graphs drawn on SIFT features related to independent face areas. The face matching strategy is based on matching individual salient facial graph characterized by SIFT features as connected to facial landmarks such as the eyes and the mouth. In order to reduce the face matching errors, the Dempster-Shafer decision theory is applied to fuse the individual matching scores obtained from each pair of salient facial features. The proposed algorithm is evaluated with the ORL and the IITK face databases. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of the proposed face recognition technique also in case of partially occluded faces.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

    Microscopic calculation of the phonon dynamics of Sr2_{2}RuO4_{4} compared with La2_{2}CuO4_{4}

    The phonon dynamics of the low-temperature superconductor Sr2_{2}RuO4_{4} is calculated quantitatively in linear response theory and compared with the structurally isomorphic high-temperature superconductor La2_{2}CuO4_{4}. Our calculation corrects for a typical deficit of LDA-based calculations which always predict a too large electronic kzk_{z}-dispersion insufficient to describe the c-axis response in the real materials. With a more realistic computation of the electronic band structure the frequency and wavevector dependent irreducible polarization part of the density response function is determined and used for adiabatic and nonadiabatic phonon calculations. Our analysis for Sr2_{2}RuO4_{4} reveals important differences from the lattice dynamics of pp- and nn-doped cuprates. Consistent with experimental evidence from inelastic neutron scattering the anomalous doping related softening of the strongly coupling high-frequency oxygen bond-stretching modes (OBSM) which is generic for the cuprate superconductors is largely suppressed or completely absent, respectively, depending on the actual value of the on-site Coulomb repulsion of the Ru4d orbitals. Also the presence of a characteristic Λ1\Lambda_{1}-mode with a very steep dispersion coupling strongly with the electrons is missing in Sr2_{2}RuO4_{4}. Moreover, we evaluate the possibility of a phonon-plasmon scenario for Sr2_{2}RuO4_{4} which has been shown recently to be realistic for La2_{2}CuO4_{4}. In contrast to La2_{2}CuO4_{4} in Sr2_{2}RuO4_{4} the very low lying plasmons are overdamped along the c-axis.Comment: 30 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables, 33 reference

    Some stochastic evolutions of conformal maps can be described by SLE and may be linked to conformal field theory via stochastic differential equations and singular vectors in highest-weight modules of the Virasoro algebra.
