On Glauber modes in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory
Gluon interactions involving spectator partons in collisions at hadronic
machines are investigated. We find a class of examples in which a mode, called

Topography-based modulation of environmental factors as a mechanism for intertidal microhabitat formation: A basis for marine ecological design.
Topographic complexity is often considered to be closely associated with habitat complexity and niche diversity; however, complex topography per se does not imply habitat suitability. Rather, ecologically suitable habitats may emerge if topographic features interact with environmental factors and thereby alter their surrounding microenvironment to the benefit of local organisms (e.g., resource provisioning, stress mitigation). Topography may thus act as a key modulator of abiotic stressors and biotic pressures, particularly in environmentally challenging intertidal systems. Here, we review how topography can alter microhabitat conditions with respect to four resources required by intertidal organisms: a source of energy (light, suspended food particles, prey, detritus), water (hydration, buffering of light, temperature and hydrodynamics), shelter (temperature, wave exposure, predation), and habitat space (substratum area, propagule settlement, movement). We synthesize mechanisms and quantitative findings of how environmental factors can be altered through topography and suggest an organism-centered 'form-follows-ecological-function' approach to designing multifunctional marine infrastructure
An effective theory for jet propagation in dense QCD matter: jet broadening and medium-induced bremsstrahlung
Two effects, jet broadening and gluon bremsstrahlung induced by the
propagation of a highly energetic quark in dense QCD matter, are reconsidered
from effective theory point of view. We modify the standard Soft Collinear
Effective Theory (SCET) Lagrangian to include Glauber modes, which are needed
to implement the interactions between the medium and the collinear fields. We
derive the Feynman rules for this Lagrangian and show that it is invariant
under soft and collinear gauge transformations. We find that the newly
constructed theory SCET recovers exactly the general result for the
transverse momentum broadening of jets. In the limit where the radiated gluons
are significantly less energetic than the parent quark, we obtain a jet
energy-loss kernel identical to the one discussed in the reaction operator
approach to parton propagation in matter. In the framework of SCET we
present results for the fully-differential bremsstrahlung spectrum for both the
incoherent and the Landau-Pomeranchunk-Migdal suppressed regimes beyond the
soft-gluon approximation. Gauge invariance of the physics results is
demonstrated explicitly by performing the calculations in both the light-cone
and covariant gauges. We also show how the process-dependent
medium-induced radiative corrections factorize from the jet production cross

A Formalism for the Systematic Treatment of Rapidity Logarithms in Quantum Field Theory
Many observables in QCD rely upon the resummation of perturbation theory to
retain predictive power. Resummation follows after one factorizes the cross
section into the rele- vant modes. The class of observables which are sensitive
to soft recoil effects are particularly challenging to factorize and resum
since they involve rapidity logarithms. In this paper we will present a
formalism which allows one to factorize and resum the perturbative series for
such observables in a systematic fashion through the notion of a "rapidity
renormalization group". That is, a Collin-Soper like equation is realized as a
renormalization group equation, but has a more universal applicability to
observables beyond the traditional transverse momentum dependent parton
distribution functions (TMDPDFs) and the Sudakov form factor. This formalism
has the feature that it allows one to track the (non-standard) scheme
dependence which is inherent in any scenario where one performs a resummation
of rapidity divergences. We present a pedagogical introduction to the formalism
by applying it to the well-known massive Sudakov form factor. The formalism is
then used to study observables of current interest. A factorization theorem for
the transverse momentum distribution of Higgs production is presented along
with the result for the resummed cross section at NLL. Our formalism allows one
to define gauge invariant TMDPDFs which are independent of both the hard
scattering amplitude and the soft function, i.e. they are uni- versal. We
present details of the factorization and resummation of the jet broadening
cross section including a renormalization in pT space. We furthermore show how
to regulate and renormalize exclusive processes which are plagued by endpoint

Perceived Overqualification and Collectivism Orientation: Implications for Work and Nonwork Outcomes

The final version is available from Sage Publications via the DOI in this record.In this research, we simultaneously examined the relative applicability of person-environment fit and relative deprivation theories in explaining the interactive effects of perceived overqualification and collectivism cultural orientations on positive outcomes. We hypothesized that the negative (positive) influence of perceived overqualification on person-environment fit (relative deprivation) will be weaker among employees with high collectivism cultural orientation. We also examined which of these two different mechanisms would explain the hypothesized interactive effects in predicting these workers’ citizenship behavior, personal initiative, work engagement, and life satisfaction. We tested our hypotheses in two studies. In Study 1, we recruited professional staff (n = 852) and their coworkers (n = 301) from 95 universities and tested our hypotheses in a matched sample of 190 employees and their peers. The moderated mediation results supported the idea of person-environment fit (but not relative deprivation) as the mechanism explaining why collectivism orientations assuaged the negative effects of perceived overqualification on these outcomes. We constructively replicated these results in Study 2, which was a time-lagged design with full-time employees (n = 224). Reducing Constraints in a Higher Dimensional Extension of the Randall and Sundrum Model
In order to investigate the phenomenological implications of warped spaces in
more than five dimensions, we consider a dimensional extension to
the Randall and Sundrum model in which the space is warped with respect to a
single direction by the presence of an anisotropic bulk cosmological constant.
The Einstein equations are solved, giving rise to a range of possible spaces in
which the additional spaces are warped. Here we consider models in
which the gauge fields are free to propagate into such spaces. After carrying
out the Kaluza Klein (KK) decomposition of such fields it is found that the KK
mass spectrum changes significantly depending on how the additional
dimensions are warped. We proceed to compute the lower bound on the KK mass
scale from electroweak observables for models with a bulk
gauge symmetry and models with a bulk gauge
symmetry. It is found that in both cases the most favourable bounds are
approximately TeV, corresponding to a mass of the first gauge
boson excitation of about 4-6 TeV. Hence additional warped dimensions offer a

The Custodial Randall-Sundrum Model: From Precision Tests to Higgs Physics
We reexamine the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model with enlarged gauge symmetry
SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_X x P_LR in the presence of a brane-localized Higgs
sector. In contrast to the existing literature, we perform the Kaluza-Klein
(KK) decomposition within the mass basis, which avoids the truncation of the KK
towers. Expanding the low-energy spectrum as well as the gauge couplings in
powers of the Higgs vacuum expectation value, we obtain analytic formulas which
allow for a deep understanding of the model-specific protection mechanisms of
the T parameter and the left-handed Z-boson couplings. In particular, in the
latter case we explain which contributions escape protection and identify them
with the irreducible sources of P_LR symmetry breaking. We furthermore show
explicitly that no protection mechanism is present in the charged-current
sector confirming existing model-independent findings. The main focus of the
phenomenological part of our work is a detailed discussion of Higgs-boson
couplings and their impact on physics at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. For
the first time, a complete one-loop calculation of all relevant Higgs-boson
production and decay channels is presented, incorporating the effects stemming

Mirroring everyday clinical practice in clinical trial design: a new concept to improve the external validity of randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trials in the pharmacological treatment of major depression
Background: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials constitute the gold standard in clinical research when testing the efficacy of new psychopharmacological interventions in the treatment of major depression. However, the blinded use of placebo has been found to influence clinical trial outcomes and may bias patient
selection.
Discussion: To improve clinical trial design in major depression so as to reflect clinical practice more closely we propose to present patients with a balanced view of the benefits of study participation irrespective of their assignment to placebo or active treatment. In addition every participant should be given the option to finally
receive the active medication. A research agenda is outlined to evaluate the impact of the proposed changes on the efficacy of the drug to be evaluated and on the demographic and clinical characteristics of the enrollment fraction with regard to its representativeness of the eligible population.
Summary: We propose a list of measures to be taken to improve the external validity of double-blind, placebocontrolled trials in major depression. The recommended changes to clinical trial design may also be relevant for other psychiatric as well as medical disorders in which expectations regarding treatment outcome may affect the
outcome itself
