Magnetic circular dichroism of x-ray absorption spectroscopy at rare-earth L2,3 edges in RE2Fe14B compounds (RE = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu)
Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in the x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS)
at the L2,3 edges for almost entire series of rare-earth (RE) elements in
RE2Fe14B, is studied experimentally and theoretically. By a quantitative
comparison of the complicated MCD spectral shapes, we find that (i) the 4f-5d
intra-atomic exchange interaction not only induces the spin and orbital
polarization of the 5d states, which is vital for the MCD spectra of the
electric dipole transition from the 2p core states to the empty 5d conduction
band, but also it accompanies a contraction of the radial part of the 5d wave
function depending on its spin and orbital state, which results in the
enhancement of the 2p-5d dipole matrix element, (ii) there are cases where the
spin polarization of the 5d states due to the hybridization with the spin
polarized 3d states of surrounding irons plays important roles, and (iii) the
electric quadrupole transition from the 2p core states to the magnetic vale!
nce 4f states is appreciable at the pre-edge region of the dipole spectrum.
Especially, our results evidence that it is important to include the
enhancement effect of the dipole matrix element in the correct interpretation
of the MCD spectra at the RE L2,3 edges.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, REVTe
Rare earth contributions to the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Co K edge in rare earth-cobalt compounds investigated by multiple-scattering calculations
The X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) has been measured at the Co K
edge in Co-hcp and R-Co compounds (R=La, Tb, Dy). The structure of the
experimental XMCD spectra in the near-edge region has been observed to be
highly sensitive to the magnetic environment of the absorbing site.
Calculations of the XMCD have been carried out at the Co K edge in Co metal,
LaCo and TbCo within the multiple-scattering framework including the
spin-orbit coupling. In the three systems, the XMCD spectra in the near-edge
region are well reproduced. The possibility to separate and quantitatively
estimate the local effects from those due to the neighboring atoms in the XMCD
cross section makes possible a more physical understanding of the spectra. The
present results emphasize the major role played by the states of the Tb
ions in the XMCD spectrum at the Co K edge in the TbCo compound.Comment: 34 pages, revtex, 10 eps figures included with epsf, after referee

Magnetic Reversal on Vicinal Surfaces
We present a theoretical study of in-plane magnetization reversal for vicinal
ultrathin films using a one-dimensional micromagnetic model with
nearest-neighbor exchange, four-fold anisotropy at all sites, and two-fold
anisotropy at step edges. A detailed "phase diagram" is presented that catalogs
the possible shapes of hysteresis loops and reversal mechanisms as a function
of step anisotropy strength and vicinal terrace length. The steps generically
nucleate magnetization reversal and pin the motion of domain walls. No sharp
transition separates the cases of reversal by coherent rotation and reversal by
depinning of a ninety degree domain wall from the steps. Comparison to
experiment is made when appropriate.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
Structure and Magnetism of well-defined cobalt nanoparticles embedded in a niobium matrix
Our recent studies on Co-clusters embedded in various matrices reveal that
the co-deposition technique (simultaneous deposition of two beams : one for the
pre-formed clusters and one for the matrix atoms) is a powerful tool to prepare
magnetic nanostructures with any couple of materials even though they are
miscible. We study, both sharply related, structure and magnetism of the Co/Nb
system. Because such a heterogeneous system needs to be described at different
scales, we used microscopic and macroscopic techniques but also local selective
absorption ones. We conclude that our clusters are 3 nm diameter f.c.c
truncated octahedrons with a pure cobalt core and a solid solution between Co
and Nb located at the interface which could be responsible for the magnetically
inactive monolayers we found. The use of a very diluted Co/Nb film, further
lithographed, would allow us to achieve a pattern of microsquid devices in view
to study the magnetic dynamics of a single-Co cluster.Comment: 7 TeX pages, 9 Postscript figures, detailed heading adde
Tumor Blood Flow Differs between Mouse Strains: Consequences for Vasoresponse to Photodynamic Therapy
Fluctuations in tumor blood flow are common and attributed to factors such as vasomotion or local vascular structure, yet, because vessel structure and physiology are host-derived, animal strain of tumor propagation may further determine blood flow characteristics. In the present report, baseline and stress-altered tumor hemodynamics as a function of murine strain were studied using radiation-induced fibrosacomas (RIF) grown in C3H or nude mice. Fluctuations in tumor blood flow during one hour of baseline monitoring or during vascular stress induced by photodynamic therapy (PDT) were measured by diffuse correlation spectroscopy. Baseline monitoring revealed fluctuating tumor blood flow highly correlated with heart rate and with similar median periods (i.e., ∼9 and 14 min in C3H and nudes, respectively). However, tumor blood flow in C3H animals was more sensitive to physiologic or stress-induced perturbations. Specifically, PDT-induced vascular insults produced greater decreases in blood flow in the tumors of C3H versus nude mice; similarly, during baseline monitoring, fluctuations in blood flow were more regular and more prevalent within the tumors of C3H mice versus nude mice; finally, the vasoconstrictor L-NNA reduced tumor blood flow in C3H mice but did not affect tumor blood flow in nudes. Underlying differences in vascular structure, such as smaller tumor blood vessels in C3H versus nude animals, may contribute to strain-dependent variation in vascular function. These data thus identify clear effects of mouse strain on tumor hemodynamics with consequences to PDT and potentially other vascular-mediated therapies
Rheological and metallurgical discussion of superplastic behaviour
The analysis of the deformation of superplastic materials shows that the structure tends to evolve towards an equiaxed state and to undergo grain growth. This behaviour influences the constitutive equations : apparent strain-hardening, sigmoidal variation of the Log stress- Log strain rate curve, low apparent activation energy values at intermediate strain rates. This deformation behaviour can be explained when the structural change is taken into account. The analysis described leads to a constitutive equation which presents a metallurgical basis since it takes into account the structural changes. By contrast, the generally proposed relationship is rheological and can be used only within a strictly mechanical approach. An hydrodynamic analogy of superplastic flow is then presented. It shows that superplasticity occurs, on the one hand when the hardest phase is not continuous, and on the other hand when the most ductile phase has a mean free path no greater than a few microns. The analogy also demonstrates that the textural evolution is different for the two phases and accounts for the observed interface sliding. Furthermore, this study suggests that superplastic behaviour with elevated values of the coefficient m can be observed, although large elongations cannot be obtained in cases where the material undergoes cavitation resulting from difficulties in interface sliding.
Direct extrusion of rate-sensitive materials through conical dies
A theoretical analysis to estimate the force required to extrude a rate-sensitive material is presented. The material is considered to behave according to the constitutive equation : σe = σ 0 sin h-1(εe/ε0) and die friction is assumed to be of the Coulomb type. Extrusion experiments performed on superplastic Pb-Sn eutectic alloys agree well with the theoretical predictions over a wide range of extrusion ratios and ram speeds. The present theoretical method which accounts for rate sensitivity is compared with other methods available in the literature. It is concluded that consideration of rate sensitivity of the extruded material represents an important factor in predicting the extrusion pressure correctly.
X-ray topography shows the appearance of rows of dislocation loops in aluminium crystals, initially dislocation free, cooled from 345°C to different temperatures. Thèse loops seem to be emitted from Bardeen-Herring sources. They grow by the elimination of the vacancies retained under supersaturation during the cooling ; then they develop into a random dislocation configuration.
