Mindfulness of what? Impact of awareness- and acceptance-focused mindful eating techniques on eating outcomes

Introduction: Significant debate exists over the conceptualization of mindfulness even though mindfulness-based interventions are widely utilized to treat obesity and problematic eating behaviors. Little research has directly compared these theorized components of mindfulness in the context of eating. The purpose of the current study was to understand the relative importance of two components of mindfulness (i.e., awareness and acceptance) on laboratory eating outcomes. Methods: An experiment was conducted with 103 obese participants (Mage = 22.38, SD = 6.82; 64.1% female, 44.6% White, MBMI = 35.42, SD = 7.68) comparing two mindful eating inductions (i.e., awareness only and awareness+acceptance) to a control condition on taste satisfaction, total caloric intake, and ratio of healthy to unhealthy foods eaten. Results: The conditions did not significantly differ in taste satisfaction, total caloric intake, or ratio of healthy to unhealthy foods eaten after controlling for hunger prior to the experiment and previous preference for the foods used in the study. Participants in the awareness only and awareness+acceptance condition reported significantly greater mindful eating awareness following the intervention compared to the control condition. Contrary to our hypotheses, participants in the control condition reported a significantly higher level of mindful eating acceptance compared to the awareness only condition, while those in the awareness+acceptance condition did not significantly differ from either of the other two conditions. Conclusions: While brief mindful eating inductions effectively increased awareness while eating, they did not alter acceptance, and these inductions did not translate to effective behavior change in the laboratory. Our sample was more diverse and had greater prior casual exposure to mindfulness than previous samples in research on mindful eating, suggesting that these inductions may not be as effective in unique populations and further research is warranted. Manipulating and measuring acceptance in mindful eating inductions is challenging and requires further research

Paper Sons and Chosen Families: Blurry Archives and Non-Biological Kinship in the Chong Family Album

In the face of Chinese exclusion and Victorian-era morality, this project presents a family photo album as a counter-narrative to racialized and gendered immigration policies. The photo album is from the Chong family who were part of a Chinese American community living in San Francisco around 1915. The paper follows the fluctuating and non-chronological layout of the album and the uncertainties within to analyze Chinese Americans family formations in the context of state control of Asian migrants, including hyper-policing and surveillance around immigration status, queerness, and class. The Chong family album demonstrates how Chinese Americans employed flexible definitions of family to create hybridized national identities, circumvent restrictive immigration practices, and conceal criminalized existences. By employing the notion of blurriness in the archive, this paper charts the emergence of non-biological forms of family, drawing relations between paper families and queer ancestries. I hope to present an alternate method for scholars to engage with archives that can restore agency to marginalized communities. Through speculation and reading the absences of archives, this paper presents a way to bridge history with current experiences, allowing for community healing and contextualizing modern intersections of migration, kinship, and queerness

Explaining Depravity through the Looking Glass: Political Prison Camps, North Korea, and Waltz\u27s Three Images

    Get PDF
The political prison camps of North Korea are blatant violations of human rights within the state. They have recently received international attention within the United Nations General Assembly and the United Nations Security Council. This paper examines these political prison camps through Kenneth Waltz’s levels of analysis in order to better understand the existence of these camps

EVALUATION OF MERCURY COOLED BREEDER REACTORS

A technical and economic evaluation of a mercury-cooled fast breeder reactor is presented. The objectives of the program were to establish the technical feasibility of a fast breeder reactor cooled with boiling mercury and to evaluate the long-range potential of such a reactor power plant for production of economic power. Details of the conceptual design of a 100-Mw(e) reactor and system are discussed. The power cost from a mercury cooled fast breeder reactor was estimated as 21.4 mills/kwh which is competitive with the power cost for the initial Enrico Fermi plant. It was concluded that this reactor concept is technically feasible and has promising long-range economic potential. (M.C.G.

An exploration of the relationships between mindfulness and obesity-related eating behaviors

    Get PDF
Little research has explored the basic relationships between different components of mindfulness and eating behaviors associated with obesity even though mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been widely utilized to treat eating behaviors. This study explored these relationships in order to inform more effective MBIs for obesity. Participants (N = 533) from a mixed community and undergraduate sample completed an online battery of assessments. All components of mindfulness were related to eating behaviors as would be expected, with the exception of trait mindful awareness. A series of multiple hierarchical regressions showed that mindful eating was a unique predictor of eating behaviors accounting for an additional 13.9 to 29.4% of the variance observed. These findings suggest mindful eating may be a better treatment target for MBIs for eating-related outcomes compared to general mindfulness inductions. Inconsistencies in mindfulness measurement were found, highlighting the need for further investigation of the relationships among mindfulness components
