    Fast recovery from node compromise in wireless sensor networks

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are susceptible to a wide range of security attacks in hostile environments due to the limited processing and energy capabilities of sensor nodes. Consequently, the use of WSNs in mission critical applications requires reliable detection and fast recovery from these attacks. While much research has been devoted to detecting security attacks, very little attention has been paid yet to the recovery task. In this paper, we present a novel mechanism that is based on dynamic network reclustering and node reprogramming for recovering from node compromise. In response to node compromise, the proposed recovery approach reclusters the network excluding compromised nodes; thus allowing normal network operation while initiating node recovery procedures. We propose a novel reclustering algorithm that uses 2-hop neighbourhood information for this purpose. For node reprogramming we propose the modified Deluge protocol. The proposed node recovery mechanism is both decentralized and scalable. Moreover, we demonstrate through its implementation on a TelosB-based sensor network testbed that the proposed recovery method performs well in a low-resource WSN.<br /

    Potentiation of melphalan activity against a murine tumour by nitroimidazole compounds.

    The activity against murine anaplastic MT tumours of the chemotherapeutic agent melphalan, either alone or in combination with one of 6 nitroimidazole compounds, was assayed using an in vivo-in vitro tumour excision assay. The melphalan alone proved cytotoxic to the tumour, whereas relatively little cytotoxicity was produced by any of the nitroimidazoles alone. When the nitroimidazole were given in combination with melphalan, dose-modifying potentiation of its cytotoxicity was observed. Maximum potentiation occurred when the nitroimidazoles were given 0--30 min before the melphalan, although some potentiation was still evident when they were given up to 2 h before or after. There was no threshold in nitroimidazole dose required to produce this potentiation, the degree of potentiation increasing with dose, albeit at a diminishing rate, to give maximum dose-modification factors of about 3. The 6 nitroimidazole compounds in order of increasing effectiveness as potentiators of melphalan activity were: METRO, Ro 05-9963, MISO, RSU 1047, Ro 03-8800 and Ro 03-8799. This order corresponds to the increasing electron affinity of these compounds. The most effective compound here, Ro 03-8799, was about twice as effective as the most widely used nitroimidazole in such studies, MISO

    Noninvasive two-photon imaging reveals retinyl ester storage structures in the eye

    Visual sensation in vertebrates is triggered when light strikes retinal photoreceptor cells causing photoisomerization of the rhodopsin chromophore 11-cis-retinal to all-trans-retinal. The regeneration of preillumination conditions of the photoreceptor cells requires formation of 11-cis-retinal in the adjacent retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Using the intrinsic fluorescence of all-trans-retinyl esters, noninvasive two-photon microscopy revealed previously uncharacterized structures (6.9 ± 1.1 μm in length and 0.8 ± 0.2 μm in diameter) distinct from other cellular organelles, termed the retinyl ester storage particles (RESTs), or retinosomes. These structures form autonomous all-trans-retinyl ester-rich intracellular compartments distinct from other organelles and colocalize with adipose differentiation-related protein. As demonstrated by in vivo experiments using wild-type mice, the RESTs participate in 11-cis-retinal formation. RESTs accumulate in Rpe65 (−/−) mice incapable of carrying out the enzymatic isomerization, and correspondingly, are absent in the eyes of Lrat (−/−) mice deficient in retinyl ester synthesis. These results indicate that RESTs located close to the RPE plasma membrane are essential components in 11-cis-retinal production

    Plasma fluctuations in crossed electric and magnetic fields

    An experimental study has been made of the high-amplitude electrical fluctuations associated with a gas discharge in a strong magnetic field.Hydrogen, helium, argon, and nitrogen gas were used at pressures from 0.3 to 100 micronsThe power spectrum on plasma probes was investigated for various values of magnetic field, gas pressure, and power input to the discharge.For the range of frequencies studied (0.5 to 4000 megacycles per second), the spectrum shows a continuous high level that increases in amplitude with decreasing pressures at all frequencies and increases with increasing magnetic field at low frequencies.A sharp dip in the spectrum was observed near the ion cyclotron frequency for discharges in hydrogen and helium. The velocity and direction of propagation for the low frequency fluctuations were determined by cross-correlating the potential variations on two neighboring probes.     An Optical Study of BG Geminorum: An Ellipsoidal Binary with an Unseen Primar Star

    We describe optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the bright variable BG Geminorum. Optical photometry shows a pronounced ellipsoidal variation of the K0 I secondary, with amplitudes of ~0.5 mag at VRI and a period of 91.645 days. A deep primary eclipse is visible for wavelengths < 4400A; a shallower secondary eclipse is present at longer wavelengths. Eclipse timings and the radial velocity curve of the K0 secondary star indicate an interacting binary where a lobe-filling secondary, M_2 ~ 0.5 Msun, transfers material into a extended disk around a massive primary, M_1 ~ 4.5 Msun. The primary star is either an early B-type star or a black hole. If it did contain a black hole, BG Gem would be the longest period black hole binary known by a factor of 10, as well as the only eclipsing black hole binary system.Comment: 27 pages, includes 8 figures and 5 tables, accepted to A

    The HgMn Binary Star Phi Herculis: Detection and Properties of the Secondary and Revision of the Elemental Abundances of the Primary

    Observations of the Mercury-Manganese star Phi Herculis with the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI) conclusively reveal the previously unseen companion in this single-lined binary system. The NPOI data were used to predict a spectral type of A8V for the secondary star Phi Her B. This prediction was subsequently confirmed by spectroscopic observations obtained at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. Phi Her B is rotating at 50 +/-3 km/sec, in contrast to the 8 km/sec lines of Phi Her A. Recognizing the lines from the secondary permits one to separate them from those of the primary. The abundance analysis of Phi Her A shows an abundance pattern similar to those of other HgMn stars with Al being very underabundant and Sc, Cr, Mn, Zn, Ga, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Ce, and Hg being very overabundant.Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 45 pages, 11 figure
