    This review provides an elementary discussion of electroweak symmetry breaking in the minimal and the next-to-minimal supersymmetric models with the focus on the fine-tuning problem -- the tension between natural electroweak symmetry breaking and the direct search limit on the Higgs boson mass. Two generic solutions of the fine-tuning problem are discussed in detail: models with unusual Higgs decays; and models with unusual pattern of soft supersymmetry breaking parameters.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures; invited review by MPL

    Solution growth of Triglycine Sulfate (TGS) crystals on the International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-1)

    An experiment was planned for the International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-1) to be launched around Feb. 1991. Crystals of triglycine sulfate (TGS) will be grown by low temperature solution crystal growth technique using a multiuser facility called Fluid Experiment System (FES). A special cooled sting technique of solution crystal growth will be used where heat is extracted from the seed crystal through a semi-insulating sting, thereby creating the desired supersaturation near the growing crystal. Also, a holocamera will be used to provide tomography of the three dimensional flow field and particle image displacement velocimetry to monitor the convective flows

    Detection of Radial Bolt-Hole Cracks Using Sampled CW Ultrasonic Doppler-Shift Techniques

    Recently there has been considerable interest in detecting radial cracks under fasteners in the wings of C-5A aircraft. Generally, detection is accomplished using the pulse-echo method, reflections from cracks being detected in real time. In the present study, cracks are detected by observing the ·Doppler-shifted frequency. A sample having a radial crack is mounted on a rotating platform in a water bath. A focused transducer transmits a tone burst such that only the shear mode propagates tangential to the hole in the metal. This transducer receives a Doppler-shifted reflected signal whenever a moving crack is in the field of view of the incident beam. The received signal is heterodyned, filtered, and displayed on a low-frequency spectrum analyzer. Merits and limitations of the technique are discussed

    Multiple roles of mucins in pancreatic cancer, a lethal and challenging malignancy.

    Mucins are members of an expanding family of large multifunctional glycoproteins. Pancreatic mucins have important biological functions, including the protection, lubrication, and moisturisation of the surfaces of epithelial tissues lining ductal structures within the pancreas. Several lines of evidence support the notion that deregulated mucin production is a hallmark of inflammatory and neoplastic disorders of the pancreas. Herein, we discuss the factors that contribute to the lethality of pancreatic cancer as well as the key role played by mucins, particularly MUC1 and MUC4, in the development and progression of the disease. Aspects pertaining to the aberrant expression and glycosylation of mucins are discussed, with special emphasis on their potential impact on the design and implementation of adequate diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for combating this lethal malignancy

    Generating Behaviorally Diverse Policies with Latent Diffusion Models

    Recent progress in Quality Diversity Reinforcement Learning (QD-RL) has enabled learning a collection of behaviorally diverse, high performing policies. However, these methods typically involve storing thousands of policies, which results in high space-complexity and poor scaling to additional behaviors. Condensing the archive into a single model while retaining the performance and coverage of the original collection of policies has proved challenging. In this work, we propose using diffusion models to distill the archive into a single generative model over policy parameters. We show that our method achieves a compression ratio of 13x while recovering 98% of the original rewards and 89% of the original coverage. Further, the conditioning mechanism of diffusion models allows for flexibly selecting and sequencing behaviors, including using language.     A Versatile Technique for the Fabrication of PEDOT: PSS Films for Organic Solar Cells

    Organic solar cells hold the potential of low-cost production as compared to inorganic solar cells, as well as the increase in efficiency. To realize these possibilities, the key is to fabricate most of the functional films in requisite structures via ambient solution-processed techniques. The PEDOT: PSS films, which are commonly used as an anode layer in organic electronic devices, were deposited on large-area ITO glass substrates under optimized conditions. The spin, spray, brush and brush+spray-coating techniques were utilized to examine their suitability in the fabrication of organic solar cells (OSCs). The films were characterized for their morphology, molecular structure, optical and electrical properties and results are compared with the existing data. A smooth and thin films of PEDOT: PSS were obtained by “Spray+Brush” coating method with attractive sheet-conductivity having  potential in fabricating OSCs with different architectures.Key words: Organic solar cells; PEDOT: PSS films; Solution-processed technique
