Surface tension of the isotropic-nematic interface
We present the first calculations of the pressure tensor profile in the
vicinity of the planar interface between isotropic liquid and nematic liquid
crystal, using Onsager's density functional theory and computer simulation.
When the liquid crystal director is aligned parallel to the interface, the
situation of lowest free energy, there is a large tension on the nematic side
of the interface and a small compressive region on the isotropic side. By
contrast, for perpendicular alignment, the tension is on the isotropic side.
There is excellent agreement between theory and simulation both in the forms of
the pressure tensor profiles, and the values of the surface tension.Comment: Minor changes; to appear in Phys. Rev.
Calculation of the ultracold neutron upscattering loss probability in fluid walled storage bottles using experimental measurements of the thermomechanical properties of Fomblin
We present experimental measurements of the properties of a liquid "Fomblin"
surface obtained by the quasielastic scattering of laser light. The properties
include the surface tension and viscosity as a function of temperature. The
results are compared to the measurements of the bulk fluid properties.
We then calculate the upscattering rate of ultracold neutrons (UCN) from
thermally excited surface capillary waves on the liquid surface and compare the
results to experimental measurements of the UCN lifetime in Fomblin
fluid-walled UCN storage bottles, and show that the excess loss rate for UCN
energies near the Fomblin potential can be explained. The rapid temperature
dependence of the Fomblin storage lifetime is explained by our analysis.Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures; 2nd version corrects several error
BEHAVIORAL SENSATION SEEKING CORRELATES WITH ADDICTION RISK BEHAVIORS AND SELF-REPORTED SENSATION SEEKING
poster abstractBackground: Trait sensation seeking (SS) substantially influences the initiation of substance use. We created a behavioral task that presents choices and consequent olfactory stimuli in real time, which is designed to model real-world choices of highly varied, novel, and intense stimuli, despite risks associated with such choices. We hypothesized that behaviorally quantified SS would correlate with risky behaviors and self-reported SS tendencies.
Methods: Undergraduate students (n=145, mean age=21±5, n=84 male, n=106 Caucasian) performed an odorant choice task, self-report SS assessments, and the Risky Behaviors Scale (RBS). Subjects used a computer mouse to choose between STANDARD (“weak, pleasant”) and VARIED (“stronger, likely pleasant but possibly unpleasant”) odors. An air-dilution olfactometer then delivered an odorant to subjects’ nostrils. Participants also rated odor intensity and pleasantness. Participants’ preference for VARIED was the primary metric of interest (Choice Ratio).
Results: Choice Ratio correlated with self-reported SS assessments (rs>0.30, ps<0.001) and negative risky behaviors (strong trend: r=0.16, p=0.057). In men only, Choice Ratio correlated with endorsement of drug and alcohol risky behaviors (r=0.25, p=0.022).
Conclusions: This SS task provides actual sensory consequences, is related to self-reported SS tendencies, and correlates with self-reported risk taking. Behaviorally quantified SS can be used in neuroimaging to probe brain patterns underlying SS tendencies. Further testing in riskier samples will expand external validity. A portable version is currently in development. K01AA020102 and HRSA 10-175 to MAC, R25GM109432 to SMB under the mentorship of MAC, K99AA023296 to BGO
External and intrinsic anchoring in nematic liquid crystals: A Monte Carlo study
We present a Monte Carlo study of external surface anchoring in nematic cells
with partially disordered solid substrates, as well as of intrinsic anchoring
at free nematic interfaces. The simulations are based on the simple hexagonal
lattice model with a spatially anisotropic intermolecular potential. We
estimate the corresponding extrapolation length by imposing an elastic
deformation in a hybrid cell-like nematic sample. Our estimates for
increase with increasing surface disorder and are essentially
temperature--independent. Experimental values of are approached only when
both the coupling of nematic molecules with the substrate and the anisotropy of
nematic--nematic interactions are weak.Comment: Revisions primarily in section I
Seasonal and hydrological control of phytoplankton nutrient limitation in the lower Neuse River Estuary, North Carolina
The lower estuary experienced a general state of nitrogen limitation, with especially pronounced limitation during summer months, a period of high phytoplankton productivity. Bioassays conducted during spring months showed significantly greater stimulation of algal productivity with the addition of N and P than that found with N addition alone. This co-stimulation occurred during periods when surface-water dissolved inorganic N:dissolved inorganic P ratios were elevated above typical values of <5. Seasonal patterns in ambient nutrient concentrations revealed N maxima associated with spring, fall, and winter runoff events, with summer minima. Hydrologically driven N loading exerted a strong, year-round influence on primary production and nutrient limitation characteristics. High-flow events acted to oversaturate the upper estuarine nutrient filtering capacity, resulting in increased N delivery to the lower estuarine environment. The phytoplankton community responded to increased flow and nutrient loadings by increasing production and biomass levels, often very rapidly. Hydrologic factors influencing nitrogen loading (terrigenous runoff, point source inputs, and wet and dry atmospheric deposition) are key determinants of the trophic state of this estuary
Defect configurations and dynamical behavior in a Gay-Berne nematic emulsion
To model a nematic emulsion consisting of a surfactant-coated water droplet
dispersed in a nematic host, we performed a molecular dynamics simulation of a
droplet immersed in a system of 2048 Gay-Berne ellipsoids in a nematic phase.
Strong radial anchoring at the surface of the droplet induced a Saturn ring
defect configuration, consistent with theoretical predictions for very small
droplets. A surface ring configuration was observed for lower radial anchoring
strengths, and a pair of point defects was found near the poles of the droplet
for tangential anchoring. We also simulated the falling ball experiment and
measured the drag force anisotropy, in the presence of strong radial anchoring
as well as zero anchoring strength.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figure
Use of human GH in elderly patients with accidental hip fracture
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether early intervention with recombinant
human growth hormone (hGH) after hip fracture improves functional recovery
and long-term outcome. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Functional recovery after hip
fracture is often incomplete. The catabolic situation that develops after
the hip fracture accident, and a state of malnutrition either pre-existing
or developing after surgery, are main contributing factors for the poor
clinical outcome. hGH has been used to promote anabolism in a variety of
clinical catabolic situations. The study design was randomized,
double-blind and placebo-controlled. A total of 111 patients older than 60
years with an accidental hip fracture (mean age 78.5+/-9.1 (s.d.) years)
were randomized to receive either hGH (20 microg/kg per day) or placebo
for a period of 6 weeks, starting within 24 h after the hip fracture
accident. Thereafter patients were followed up for an additional period of
18 weeks. Efficacy was assessed by comparing the changes in the Barthel
Index score of activities of daily living and in a patient's living
situation between the hGH- and the placebo-treated subjects. RESULTS:
Eighty-five (78.5%) patients completed the first 8 weeks of the study and
76 (68.5%) the entire study period of 24 weeks. When split according to
age, a trend was found that for patients older than 75 years the changes
in Barthel Index score from baseline were less in the hGH group than in
the placebo group (-18.6+/-18 vs -28.1+/-26) at 6 weeks after surgery
(P<0.075). There was an overall trend to a higher rate of return to the
pre-fracture independent living situation in the hGH group than in the
placebo group. Analysis by age revealed a significantly higher proportion
of hGH- than placebo-treated patients returning to the pre-fracture living
situation for subjects older than 75 years (93.8 vs 75.0%, P=0.034). hGH
treatment increased IGF-I values to levels in the range of those of normal
subjects of 50-60 years of age. CONCLUSIONS: A 6 week treatment with hGH
(20 microg/kg per day) of otherwise healthy patients after an accidental
hip fracture may be of benefit if given to subjects older than 75 years of
age. The rate of return to the pre-fracture living situation in subjects
of this age treated with hGH was significantly increased when compared
with the placebo-treated group. The treatment intervention was well
tolerated and no safety issues were recorded
A chemotherapy privileging process for advanced practice providers at an academic medical center
Purpose: Nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists are advanced practice providers who are highly trained and qualified healthcare professionals that can help support traditional demands on oncologists' increased time in direct patient care. The purpose of this study was to detail and assess the creation of a privileging process for this group of medical professionals within an academic medical center. Obtaining the designation of limited oncology practice provider (LOPP) gives the right to modify chemotherapy orders and to order supportive care medications. Methods: An interdisciplinary team developed a comprehensive training process inclusive of required educational domains, knowledge goals, and educational activities to become an LOPP. In 2018, five years after the implementation of the privileging process, a survey was distributed to assess perceptions of the training process and integration of LOPPs within oncology practice. Results: Most oncologists noted that working with LOPPs is beneficial to oncology practice (94%) and that they make modifying chemotherapy orders more efficient (87%). Greater than 82% of LOPPs also reported that their privileges streamline the chemotherapy process and make them feel valuable. Conclusion: The creation of the LOPP designation is an effective way to integrate nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists within oncology practice. The inclusion of a focused privileging process ensures the safety of cancer care provided and has created a streamlined process for chemotherapy modifications and supportive care
Leveraging natural history biorepositories as a global, decentralized, pathogen surveillance network
The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic reveals a major gap in global biosecurity infrastructure: a lack of publicly available biological samples representative across space, time, and taxonomic diversity. The shortfall, in this case for vertebrates, prevents accurate and rapid identification and monitoring of emerging pathogens and their reservoir host(s) and precludes extended investigation of ecological, evolutionary, and environmental associations that lead to human infection or spillover. Natural history museum biorepositories form the backbone of a critically needed, decentralized, global network for zoonotic pathogen surveillance, yet this infrastructure remains marginally developed, underutilized, underfunded, and disconnected from public health initiatives. Proactive detection and mitigation for emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) requires expanded biodiversity infrastructure and training (particularly in biodiverse and lower income countries) and new communication pipelines that connect biorepositories and biomedical communities. To this end, we highlight a novel adaptation of Project ECHO’s virtual community of practice model: Museums and Emerging Pathogens in the Americas (MEPA). MEPA is a virtual network aimed at fostering communication, coordination, and collaborative problem-solving among pathogen researchers, public health officials, and biorepositories in the Americas. MEPA now acts as a model of effective international, interdisciplinary collaboration that can and should be replicated in other biodiversity hotspots. We encourage deposition of wildlife specimens and associated data with public biorepositories, regardless of original collection purpose, and urge biorepositories to embrace new specimen sources, types, and uses to maximize strategic growth and utility for EID research. Taxonomically, geographically, and temporally deep biorepository archives serve as the foundation of a proactive and increasingly predictive approach to zoonotic spillover, risk assessment, and threat mitigation
