Although a number of models for this biochemical network are proposed, in many cases only qualitative agreement between the model output and experimental data was demonstrated, since very little information is currently available to guide the selection of parameter values for the models.     RISE: a fast-readout imager for exoplanet transit timing

    By the precise timing of the low amplitude (0.005 - 0.02 magnitude) transits of exoplanets around their parent star it should be possible to infer the presence of other planetary bodies in the system down to Earth-like masses. We describe the design and construction of RISE, a fast-readout frame transfer camera for the Liverpool Telescope designed to carry out this experiment. The results of our commissioning tests are described as well as the data reduction procedure necessary. We present light curves of two objects, showing that the desired timing and photometric accuracy can be obtained providing that autoguiding is used to keep the target on the same detector pixel for the entire (typically 4 hour) observing run.Comment: Published in PROC SPIE, vol 7014, 70416

    Opportunities to demonstrate expertise and job satisfaction of community pharmacists in Japan and England

    Background: In response to anticipated increased health needs as a consequence of aging populations, and associated rising co-morbidity and medicines use, in both Japan and the UK potential extended roles for community pharmacy are part of health policy agendas. It is widely perceived that community pharmacists do not fully utilize their expertise, which may limit their contribution to health care in their communities and also impact negatively on their own job satisfaction. Purpose: The aim of this qualitative study was to identify operations that are perceived as opportunities to demonstrate expertise (ODE) and/or sources of job satisfaction by pharmacists in Japan and England, and explore associated system and contextual factors. Methods: Data were gathered with purposively selected pharmacists in Japan and England. An initial questionnaire was forwarded which guided subsequent face-to-face semi-structured interviews. These were audio-recoded to enable qualitative analytical procedures. Results: There were 18 participants in England and 13 in Japan. There was a notable association between ODE and job satisfaction. However, ODE was not a sufficient condition for job satisfaction. Conclusion: In order for pharmacists to be satisfied with their jobs, not only ODE but also additional contextual factors, i.e. recognition of professionalism, autonomy and positive collaboration were also needed. The findings can inform initiatives in the development of pharmacy services that would be positive for pharmacists whilst potentially contributing to wider public health objectives

Existing empirical evidence points to the following relationship between cost of resistance and virulence. If a resistant pathogen suffers a fitness cost in terms of reduced growth rate it commonly has lower virulence compared to the sensitive wild-type. If this cost is absent so is the reduction in virulence. Here we show, using experimental evolution of drug resistance in the fungal human pathogen Candida glabrata, that reduced growth rate of resistant strains need not result in reduced virulence. Phenotypically heterogeneous populations were evolved in parallel containing highly resistant sub-population small colony variants (SCVs) alongside sensitive sub-populations. Despite their low growth rate in the absence of an antifungal drug, the SCVs did not suffer a marked alteration in virulence compared with the wild-type ancestral strain, or their co-isolated sensitive strains. This contrasts with classical theory that assumes growth rate to positively correlate with virulence.     Evaluation of competences at the community pharmacy settings

    The General Level Framework (GLF) document provides a model to be used in evaluating and upgrading of pharmacists’ competences currently used in many countries. This study has several Objectives: To show the adaptation process of the GLF document to the Serbian pharmaceutical work practices and regulations; to illustrate the implementation of the GLF document; to evaluate and monitor the development of pharmacists’ competencies. Materials and Methods: The adaptation, analysis, validation and adjustment of the GLF document were conducted using the expert panel method. The implementation was conducted on a sample of pharmacists employed in Subotica Pharmacy chain. Later, the evaluation of the pharmacists’ competencies was performed at two observation points (at the beginning of the study and after 6 months) by the team of seven GLF members. Results and Discussion: The GLF document was reviewed by 14 members of the expert panel. During the content validation performed at the expert panel meeting, all competencies stated in the GLF document were rated according to their importance with an average grade of between 8.26 and 9.80 and thus reached a consensus regarding all 26 competencies. During the evaluation of the pharmacists’ competences, the greatest improvement after the second observation was noted in the “Patient consent” competency, followed by the “Drug history”, “The prescription is legal“, “Health needs”, “Provision of written information” and “Assessing outcomes of contributions” competencies. All the competencies in the GLF document were accepted for the implementation in the Subotica Pharmacy chain. Six of the competencies there was a significant improvement observed

    An analysis of the global pharmacy workforce capacity

    BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there is a global healthcare workforce shortage of 7.2 million, which is predicted to grow to 12.9 million by 2035. Globally, people are living longer with multiple co-morbidities and require increased access and use of medicines. Pharmacists are a key component of the healthcare workforce, and in many countries, pharmacists are the most accessible healthcare profession. This paper identifies key issues and current trends affecting the global pharmacy workforce, in particular workforce distribution, country economic status, capacity, and workforce gender balance. METHODS: National professional pharmacy leadership bodies, together with other contacts for professional bodies, regulatory bodies, and universities, were approached to provide country-level data on pharmacy workforce. A descriptive and comparative analysis was conducted to assess each country's pharmacy workforce. RESULTS: A total of 89 countries and territories responded to the survey. To standardise the capacity measure, an analysis of the population density of pharmacists (per 10 000 population) was performed. The sample mean was 6 pharmacists per 10 000 population (n = 80). There is considerable variation between the surveyed countries/territories ranging from 0.02 (Somalia) to 25.07 (Malta) pharmacists per 10 000 population. African nations have significantly fewer pharmacists per capita. Pharmacist density correlates with gross national income (GNI) and health expenditure. The majority of pharmacists are employed in community settings, followed by hospital, industry-related, academia, and regulation. There is a greater proportion of females in the pharmacy workforce globally, with some WHO regions showing female representation of more than 65 % with an increasing trend trajectory. CONCLUSIONS: Pharmacy workforce capacity varies considerably between countries and regions and generally correlates with population- and country-level economic indicators. Those countries and territories with lower economic indicators tend to have fewer pharmacists and pharmacy technicians; this has implications for inequalities regarding access to medicines and medicine expertise

    Gender, foundation degrees and the knowledge economy

    This article questions the concept of ‘education for employment’, which constructs a discourse of individual and societal benefit in a knowledge‐driven economy. Recent policy emphasis in the European Union promotes the expansion of higher education and short‐cycle vocational awards such as the intermediate two‐year Foundation Degree recently introduced into England and Wales. Studies of vocational education and training (VET) and the knowledge economy have focused largely on the governance of education and on the development and drift of policy. Many VET programmes have also been considered for their classed, raced and gendered take‐up and subsequent effect on employment. This article builds on both fields of study to engage with the finer cross‐analyses of gender, social class, poverty, race and citizenship. In its analysis of policy texts the article argues that in spite of a discourse of inclusivity, an expanded higher education system has generated new inequalities, deepening social stratification. Drawing on early analyses of national quantitative data sets, it identifies emerging gendered, classed and raced patterns and considers these in relation to occupationally and hierarchically stratified labour markets, both within and without the knowledge economy

    A country-level national needs assessment of the Indonesian pharmacy workforce

    Background: Conducting a systematic country-level workforce needs-assessment is a way to develop coherent strategic and justifiable workforce planning. / Objective(s): This article describes a country-level needs-assessment process using a systematic approach (via the FIP Development Goals (FIP DGs) workforce element) as an analytical framework. The needs-assessment aimed to prioritise gaps toward transforming the pharmacy workforce as a prelude to practice and pharmaceutical services reform in Indonesia. / Methods: The needs assessment consisted of three stages: needs identification, needs analysis, and needs prioritisation. The needs (workforce development gaps) were defined as the discrepancies between the perceived workforce challenges and the existing national workforce development projects. Interviews or group discussions were conducted to gather the workforce challenges of individual pharmacists. A structured workshop was conducted to identify workforce challenges and existing organisations' projects, with main stakeholders contributing to pharmacists' development in Indonesia. Perceived challenges findings and identified national workforce projects were mapped to the FIP DGs workforce element. The needs prioritisation was conducted by comparing the proportional mapping to the FIP DGs workforce element. / Results: There were forty-three individual pharmacists and 7 principal stakeholder categories that provided information related to perceived workforce challenges; thirty national projects were identified from stakeholders. While this study identified perceived challenges with workforce “competency development” and “pharmacy workforce intelligence,” there were no active ongoing national projects mapped to those goals. The framework mapping analysis showed there are workforce development gaps centred on “competency development” initiatives, “advanced and specialist development” initiatives, and strategic pharmacy workforce intelligence data gathering. Additionally, there were policy gaps with initiatives for strengthening “working with others” and a lack of clarity on infrastructure for early-career training strategies and workforce impact. / Conclusions: This study prioritises the gaps in developing pharmacists in Indonesia. This process could be used in conducting needs assessment of pharmacy workforce development in other Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs)
