Representing young people's sexuality in the 'youth' media
This paper reports findings from a content analysis of the main messages about sexuality in media outlets consumed by young people. It examines how sexuality is represented and the level of sexual health information provided in some UK magazines and TV programmes targeted at young people. Our findings show that such outlets included a vast range of useful discussion including information about health concerns and in-depth exploration of issues such as consent and examples of couples exploring whether or not they were ‘ready’ for sex. In particular, the right of girls to ‘say no’ was vividly fore-grounded in several teen dramas and magazines. However, coverage was also characterized by certain limitations. A clear pattern was evident whereby contraception and managing ‘how far to go’ were depicted as women's responsibility. There was a limited range of representations for young men, a lack of positive images of lesbian and gay teenagers, and a failure to represent diversity. There were also no examples of how people might raise concerns such as safer sex. In this context, health educators need to be aware of both the richness and the limitations of current mainstream representations in order to work with and through the media to improve the quality and range of material for young people
The Technological Progress of Malaysian Banks: An Empirical Investigation.
It is customary to argue that technological innovations result in productivity enhancement. This paper explores this issue in the context of the Malaysian banking sector which has been subject to enormous restructuring and technological innovations, inclusive of the introduction of e-banking. The provision of banking services through electronic delivery channels can be equated with the e-government initiatives. This study attempts to identify the contribution of e-banking and technological progress of Malaysian commercial banks by employing the Malmquist productivity index (MPI), whereby productivity growth amongst the banks is broken down into technical efficiency change, scale change and technological change. The sample includes all 10 domestic commercial banks in Malaysia over the period of 1997 to 2002. The principle findings indicate an overall rise in total productivity, driven by technological progress rather than scale change or technical efficiency change. Extending to e-government, the employment of high-end, state of the art information and communication technologies can facilitate efficient and effective delivery of government services through electronic delivery channels. The results, which detail the improvements achieved by the best practice bank, may provide useful insights for government regulators and management for policy formulation.Malmquist productivity index; technological progress; e-banking; productivity changes
A Simplest Swimmer at Low Reynolds Number: Three Linked Spheres
We propose a very simple one-dimensional swimmer consisting of three spheres
that are linked by rigid rods whose lengths can change between two values. With
a periodic motion in a non-reciprocal fashion, which breaks the time-reversal
symmetry as well as the translational symmetry, we show that the model device
can swim at low Reynolds number. This model system could be used in
constructing molecular-size machines
Evolving turbulence and magnetic fields in galaxy clusters
We discuss, using simple analytical models and MHD simulations, the origin
and parameters of turbulence and magnetic fields in galaxy clusters. Three
physically distinct regimes can be identified in the evolution of cluster
turbulence and magnetic fields. Firstly, the fluctuation dynamo will produce
microgauss-strong, random magnetic fields during cluster formation and major
mergers. Turbulent velocity of about 300 km/s can be maintained at scales
100-200 kpc. The magnetic field is intermittent, has a smaller scale of 20-30
kpc and average strength of 2 microgauss. Secondly, when major mergers end,
turbulent speed and magnetic field undergo a power-law decay, decreasing in
strength but increasing in scale by a factor of about two. Thirdly,
smaller-mass subclusters and cluster galaxies produce turbulent wakes, with
turbulent speeds and magnetic field strengths similar to those quoted above.
The velocity scales are about 200 kpc and 10 kpc respectively, and the magnetic
field scale is about 6 times smaller. Although these wakes may fill only a
small fraction of the cluster volume, their area covering factor can be close
to unity. So one can potentially reconcile observations that indicate the
coexistence of turbulence with ordered filamentary gas structures, as in the
Perseus cluster. Random Faraday rotation measure is estimated to be typically
100-200 rad/m^2, in agreement with observations. We predict detectable
synchrotron polarization from cluster radio halos at wavelengths 3-6 cm, if

Exact results for the thermal and magnetic properties of strong coupling ladder compounds
We investigate the thermal and magnetic properties of the integrable su(4)
ladder model by means of the quantum transfer matrix method. The magnetic
susceptibility, specific heat, magnetic entropy and high field magnetization
are evaluated from the free energy derived via the recently proposed method of
high temperature expansion for exactly solved models. We show that the
integrable model can be used to describe the physics of the strong coupling
ladder compounds. Excellent agreement is seen between the theoretical results
and the experimental data for the known ladder compounds

Magnetization Plateaux in Bethe Ansatz Solvable Spin-S Ladders
We examine the properties of the Bethe Ansatz solvable two- and three-leg
spin- ladders. These models include Heisenberg rung interactions of
arbitrary strength and thus capture the physics of the spin- Heisenberg
ladders for strong rung coupling. The discrete values derived for the
magnetization plateaux are seen to fit with the general prediction based on the
Lieb-Schultz- Mattis theorem. We examine the magnetic phase diagram of the
spin-1 ladder in detail and find an extended magnetization plateau at the
fractional value in agreement with the experimental observation
for the spin-1 ladder compound BIP-TENO.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur
Evidence for the super Tonks-Girardeau gas
We provide evidence in support of a recent proposal by Astrakharchik at al.
for the existence of a super Tonks-Girardeau gas-like state in the attractive
interaction regime of quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases. We show that the super
Tonks-Giradeau gas-like state corresponds to a highly-excited Bethe state in
the integrable interacting Bose gas for which the bosons acquire hard-core
behaviour. The gas-like state properties vary smoothly throughout a wide range
from strong repulsion to strong attraction. There is an additional stable
gas-like phase in this regime in which the bosons form two-body bound states

Phase diagram of the su(8) quantum spin tube
We calculate the phase diagram of an integrable anisotropic 3-leg quantum
spin tube connected to the su(8) algebra. We find several quantum phase
transitions for antiferromagnetic rung couplings. Their locations are
calculated exactly from the Bethe Ansatz solution and we discuss the nature of

On the third order structure function for rotating 3D homogeneous turbulent flow
A form for the two-point third order structure function has been calculated
for three dimensional homogeneous incompressible slowly rotating turbulent
fluid. It has been argued that it may possibly hint at the initiation of the
phenomenon of two-dimensionalisation of the 3D incompressible turbulence owing
