“Les Mille et Une Nuits débarquent dans la crèche” : Gaspard, Melchior et Balthazar de Michel Tournier ou l'éloge de la diversité culturelle

Michel Tournier is a travel writer who for years has shared his time between Choisel, a small French village in Vallée de Chevreuse, and worldwide peregrinations especially in Germany and in Maghreb. Spending two years studying ethnography with Claude Lévi-Strauss has contributed to shape his taste for travel and his curiosity regarding foreign cultures. This opening up to the world and to people is one of the characteristics of Tournier\u27s novels such as Gaspard, Melchior et Balthazar (1980). We propose to demonstrate that in this novel relatively unstudied by critics Tournier\u27s free interpretation of the Magi legend is developed for praising the dialogue among cultures and the wealth of alterity. In Célébration de l\u27offrande Tournier explains his sensibility for the Magi legend and for the universal symbol it embodies. Originally, by their skin colour the Magi recall that the message of Christ is directed to everybody, foreigners and heathens included. From this symbolic and leveraging blanks left by the Gospel according to St. Matthew, Tournier insists in his story on the meeting of cultures using the identity and the concerns he gives to each of the Magi. However, this sensitivity to intercultural dialogue goes beyond a mere thematic thought and is part of the aesthetic of the novel. Gaspard, Melchior et Balthazar is inspired by various cultural sources. In particular, we focus on Tournier\u27s pictorial (initially Italian) and literary (French, German, and American) influences and on their meaning that make the originality of this novel described by Tournier as « Les Mille et Une Nuits débarqu[ant] dans la crèche » (Tournier, 1998: p. 8). Given this polyphony, the notion of “novel of Christianity” developed by some critics is then examined. In our opinion, despite being Christian Tourier did not try to make a Christian novel. As an argument, we show that the analyze of these three themes is rich in intertextuality that contributes to overlay to the Christian vision of human destiny concepts from other wisdoms and traditions

Or, c’est à travers l’empreinte de pas découverte sur la plage que se révèle et se recompose l’identité d’Ogomtemêli et sa place dans le monde. Plus qu’une péripétie, l’empreinte est un motif à partir duquel le naufragé devient la conscience historique et écologique de l’humanité vivant sur une seule et même terre, un lieu-monde dans lequel la relation doit supplanter l’exploitation

Les textes brefs non-fictionnels de Michel Tournier : la célébration de la vie au miroir de la maturité

If Michel Tournier willingly defines his work by the notion of celebration, the emphasis he placed on it remains unequal across texts and time. In his first novels, the celebration mainly takes place in the last part of the narrative and is opposed to the darkness of the beginning. This darkness peters out in Tournier’s latest work, in particular in three collections of non-fiction short texts: Petites proses (1986), Célébrations (1999) and Journal extime (2002). These texts, which focus on daily pleasures, depict a peaceful and serene writer. Nevertheless, because it coincides with the first anxieties of old age, this evolution to the celebration raises questions. Thus, we propose to examine this late triumph of the celebration.Si Michel Tournier define fácilmente el conjunto de su obra por la noción de celebración, la importancia que otorga a aquella es sin embargo desigual en función de los textos y de las épocas. En las primeras novelas de Tournier, la celebración aparece sobre todo en la última parte del relato y se opone a la negrura del principio. Esa negrura tiende a desaparecer en las obras más recientes del escritor, sobre todo en tres libros de textos breves no-ficcionales, Petites proses (1986), Célébrations (1999) y Journal extime (2002). Aquellos textos, que operan una aproximación hacia los placeres cotidianos, dan la imagen de un escritor tranquilizado y sereno. No obstante, como coincide con las primeras angustias de la vejez, esta evolución hacia la celebración no puede sino plantear interrogaciones. Proponemos entonces cuestionar ese triunfo tardío de la celebración.Si Michel Tournier définit volontiers l'ensemble de son œuvre par la notion de célébration, la place qu'il accorde à celle-ci demeure toutefois inégale suivant les textes et les époques. Dans les premiers romans de Tournier, la célébration intervient surtout dans la dernière partie du récit et s'oppose à la noirceur du début. Cette noirceur tend à disparaître dans les œuvres plus récentes de l'écrivain, notamment dans trois recueils de textes brefs non-fictionnels, Petites proses (1986), Célébrations (1999) et Journal extime (2002). Ces textes, qui opèrent un resserrement sur les plaisirs du quotidien, donnent l'image d'un écrivain apaisé et serein. Pourtant, parce qu'elle coïncide avec les premières angoisses de la vieillesse, cette évolution vers la célébration n'est pas sans soulever des interrogations.
