Agile Method Tailoring in a CMMI Level 5 Organization

We investigate the use and tailoring of agile methods in a highly disciplined CMMI Level 5 organization. We explore gaps between traditional agile practices and those required for enhanced levels of governance required by CMMI appraisal. We conducted a case study with recorded interviews from practitioners at NIIT Technology Ltd. The interviews were iteratively analysed and coded. Our findings show that agile methods must be supplemented with pre-sprint planning, evidence recording, project metrics, team self-organization, process standardization, and process base-lining to support the CMMI appraisal. There are challenges around Agile compliance with CMMI Level 4 processes and misconceptions about agile methods precluding documentation of the rationale for design decisions. This research contributes data to the tailoring of agile methods in a high-maturity CMMI context and will be useful for agile teams conducting level 5 appraisal

Steam oxidation of shot peened austenitic stainless steel

Shot peened steel tubing made from 304HCu-grade austenitic stainless steel was exposed to temperatures of 600-750°C in three atmospheres: vacuum, deoxygenated atmospheric pressure steam and deoxygenated 70bar steam. The microstructural changes and oxide morphologies of the shot peened material were observed with SEM, TEM, microhardness testing and TKD mapping. An estimate of the lifetime of the shot peened microstructure in service conditions was made based on service temperature. MnCr2O4 spinel was observed on oxidized samples and the consequences of this are discussed

Sancti Episcopi : a study of the canonization of bishops in England, 1170-1320.

In 1250 the chronicler Matthew Paris had noticed a boom in English sanctity where ‘it seemed therefore to be a time of renewal, in which everyone was made full of the spirit of all the saints’. This revival of saintly virtues continued in motion until 1320 with the canonization of Thomas de Cantilupe. What is neglected, however, is that this resurgence of saintly religiosity was manifested almost wholly in the canonization of sancti episcopi – holy bishops. Between the martyrdom of Thomas Becket and the canonization of Thomas de Cantilupe, England and Ireland accounted for more than sixty percent of bishops canonized within all of Christendom, a trend which calls out for consideration, since many scholars have noted it, yet never sought to explain it fully. This dissertation uses many of the primary sources available in order to examine three of the bishops who were canonized during the period (Thomas Becket, Wulfstan of Worcester and Thomas de Cantilupe) in order to see if they conformed to or exhibited any cohesive ‘model’ of sanctity. It also examines Stephen Langton, one of the bishops around whom a local cult developed, but who did not receive a process of canonization, in order to show how bishops changed how holiness could be perceived and exhibited. It asks why so many of these men attained holiness in England, whereas in the rest of Christendom other types of saint took precedence. Ultimately, as with any work on the saints of medieval England, this study shows how the borders between the living and the dead in the Middle Ages were always blurred, and how the ordinary people of the time sought solace in the cult of the saints

Cholecystogastric fistula: a brief report and review of the literature.

Cholecystogastric fistula is a rare, life-threatening complication of cholelithiasis that presents a difficult challenge to the surgeon when it occurs in elderly and co-morbid patients. Following a case of a 68-year-old female who presented with a short history of epigastric pain and vomiting, and in whom a cholecystogastric fistula was identified on abdominal computed tomography and confirmed on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, we performed a systematic review of the literature on the management of cholecystogastric fistula. Our patient underwent laparotomy without excision of the fistula nor cholecystectomy and had an uncomplicated post-operative course. Surgical management using an open approach remains the mainstay of treatment of cholecystogastric fistula although laparoscopic techniques are used with increasing success. Surgical closure of the fistula is not always necessary. Improved surgical techniques including the use of laparoscopic surgery have led to improved outcomes in the management of cholecystogastric fistula

Ephemeral detection of Bonamia exitiosa (Haplosporida) in adult and larval European flat oysters Ostrea edulis in the Solent, United Kingdo

The haplosporidian parasite Bonamia exitiosa was detected using PCR in four adult and six larval brood samples of the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis from the Solent, UK. This represents the second reported detection of this parasite along the south coast of England. Adult oysters were collected and preserved from seabed populations or restoration broodstock cages between 2015 and 2018. The larvae within brooding adults sampled during 2017 and 2018 were also preserved. Molecular analysis of all samples was performed in 2019. The DNA of B. exitiosa was confirmed to be present within the gill tissue of one oyster within the Portsmouth wild fishery seabed population (n = 48), sampled in November 2015; the congeneric parasite Bonamia ostreae was not detected in this individual. This is the earliest record of B. exitiosa in the Solent. Concurrent presence of both B. ostreae and B. exitiosa, determined by DNA presence, was confirmed in the gill and heart tissue of three mature individuals from broodstock cages sampled in October 2017 (n = 99), two from a location on the River Hamble and one from the Camber Dock in Portsmouth Harbour. B. exitiosa was not detected in the November 2018 broodstock populations. A total of six larval broods were positive for B. exitiosa, with five also positive for B. ostreae. None of the brooding adults were positive for B. exitiosa suggesting that horizontal transmission from the surrounding environment to the brooding larvae is occurring. Further sampling of broodstock populations conducted by the Fish Health Inspectorate at the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science in June 2019 did not detect infection of O. edulis by B. exitiosa. These findings together suggest that the pathogen has not currently established in the area

Existential Communication and Leadership

The aim of this article is to introduce and explain a number of important existentialist philosophers and concepts that we believe can contribute to a critical approach to leadership theory. Emphasis is placed on understanding the nature of communication from an existentialist perspective and so Jaspers' conceptualization of existential communication is introduced along with important related concepts that may be regarded as important facets of leader communication including Being-in-the-world, the Other, intersubjectivity, dialogue and indirect communication. Particular attention is paid to Buber's ideas on communication as relationship and dialogue. Throughout, reference is made to contemporary, and what is often regarded as orthodox, thinking regarding the centrality of communication to leadership practice as a means by which to highlight the salience of an existentialist analysis

Current- and wave- generated bedforms on mixed sand-clay intertidal flats : a new bedform phase diagram and implications for bed roughness and preservation potential

Bedforms are also a key marker of palaeoenvironments. Experiments have shown that even modest biotic and abiotic cohesion in sand inhibits bedform formation, modifies bedform size, and slows bedform development, but this has rarely been tested in nature. The present study used a comprehensive dataset recorded over a complete spring–neap cycle on an intertidal flat to investigate bedform dynamics controlled by a wide range of wave and current conditions, including the effects of wave–current angle and bed cohesion. A detailed picture of different bedform types and their relationship to the flow, be they equilibrium, non-equilibrium, or relict, was produced, and captured in a phase diagram that integrates wave-dominated, current-dominated, and combined wave–current bedforms. This bedform phase diagram incorporates a substantially wider range of flow conditions than previous phase diagrams, including bedforms related to near-orthogonal wave–current angles, such as ladderback ripples. Comparison with laboratory-derived bedform phase diagrams indicates that washed-out ripples, lunate interference ripples and upper-stage plane beds replace the subaqueous dune field; such bedform distributions may be a key characteristic of intertidal flats. The field data also provide a means of predicting the dimensions of these bedforms, which can be transferred to other areas and grain sizes. We show that an equation for the prediction of equilibrium bedform size is sufficient to predict the roughness, even though the bedforms are highly variable in character and only in equilibrium with the flow for approximately half the time. Whilst the effect of cohesive clay is limited under more active spring conditions, clay does play a role in reducing the bedform dimensions under more quiescent neap conditions. We also investigated which combinations of waves, currents, and bed clay contents in the intertidal zone have the highest potential for bedform preservation in the geological record. This shows that combined wave–current bedforms have the lowest preservation potential and equilibrium current ripples have the highest preservation potential, even in the presence of moderate and storm waves. Hence, the absence of wave ripples and combined-flow bedforms and their primary stratification in sedimentary successions cannot be taken as evidence that waves were absent at the time of deposition.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
