Resource-efficient technology to produce 4-aminodiphenylamine
A critical analysis of the existing and emerging methods for preparation of 4-aminodiphenylamine has been conducted. It is noted that, in economic and environmental terms, the promising methods are based on condensation of aniline with nitrobenzene in an alkaline medium, followed by hydrogenation of the resulting intermediates. Using the above method for industrial production of 4-ADPA will help eliminate principal shortcomings inherent in the existing industrial methods: reduce unit operations of the process, use more accessible, inexpensive raw materials, increase product yield, eliminate formation of carcinogenic substances, significantly decrease the formation of waste products and, most importantly, decrease the volume of waste water. The most promising methods for industrial production are recent discoveries that use heterogeneous catalysts during condensation of aniline with nitrobenzene, e.g., zeolite ZSM-5 treated with tetramethylammonium hydroxide or highly basic anions which considerably simplify production technology and process control, lower costs and comply with strict environmental requirements
Internal state conversion in ultracold gases
We consider an ultracold gas of (non-condensed) bosons or fermions with two
internal states, and study the effect of a gradient of the transition frequency
between these states. When a RF pulse is applied to the sample,
exchange effects during collisions transfer the atoms into internal states
which depend on the direction of their velocity. This results, after a short
time, in a spatial separation between the two states. A kinetic equation is
solved analytically and numerically; the results agree well with the recent
observations of Lewandowski et al.Comment: Accepted version, to appear in PR

Normal-superfluid interaction dynamics in a spinor Bose gas
Coherent behavior of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates is studied in the
presence of a significant uncondensed (normal) component. Normal-superfluid
exchange scattering leads to a near-perfect local alignment between the spin
fields of the two components. Through this spin locking, spin-domain formation
in the condensate is vastly accelerated as the spin populations in the
condensate are entrained by large-amplitude spin waves in the normal component.
We present data evincing the normal-superfluid spin dynamics in this regime of
complicated interdependent behavior.Comment: 5 pages, 4 fig
Optical excitations in a non-ideal Bose gas
Optical excitations in a Bose gas are demonstrated to be very sensitive to
many-body effects. At low temperature the momentum relaxation is provided by
momentum exchange collisions, rather than by elastic collisions. A collective
excitation mode forms, which in a Boltzmann gas is manifest in a collision
shift and dramatic narrowing of spectral lines.
In the BEC state, each spectral line splits into two components. The doubling
of the optical excitations results from the physics analogous to that of the
second sound. We present a theory of the line doubling, and calculate the
oscillator strengths and linewidth.Comment: 5 pages, 3 eps figure
Calculations of polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities for the Be ion
The polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities of the Be ion in the
state and the state are determined. Calculations are performed
using two independent methods: i) variationally determined wave functions using
Hylleraas basis set expansions and ii) single electron calculations utilizing a
frozen-core Hamiltonian. The first few parameters in the long-range interaction
potential between a Be ion and a H, He, or Li atom, and the leading
parameters of the effective potential for the high- Rydberg states of
beryllium were also computed. All the values reported are the results of
calculations close to convergence. Comparisons are made with published results
where available.Comment: 18 pp; added details to Sec. I
Cold Collision Frequency Shift of the 1S-2S Transition in Hydrogen
We have observed the cold collision frequency shift of the 1S-2S transition
in trapped spin-polarized atomic hydrogen. We find , where is the sample density. From this
we derive the 1S-2S s-wave triplet scattering length, nm,
which is in fair agreement with a recent calculation. The shift provides a
valuable probe of the distribution of densities in a trapped sample.Comment: Accepted for publication in PRL, 9 pages, 4 PostScript figures,

Transverse spin dynamics in a spin-polarized Fermi liquid
The linear equations for transverse spin dynamics in weakly polarised
degenerate Fermi liquid with arbitrary relationship between temperature and
polarization are derived from Landau-Silin phenomenological kinetic equation
with general form of two-particle collision integral. The temperature and
polarization dependence of the spin current relaxation time is established. It
is found in particular that at finite polarization transverse spin wave damping
has a finite value at T=0. The analogy between temperature dependences of spin
waves attenuation and ultrasound absorption in degenerate Fermi liquid at
arbitrary temperature is presented. We also discuss spin-polarized Fermi liquid
in the general context of the Fermi-liquid theory and compare it with "Fermi
liquid" with spontaneous magnetization.Comment: 10 page
