    Comparative morphological, anatomical, ecological and chemical studies on endemic Satureja parnassica subsp. sipylea from Turkey

    Satureja. parnassica Heldr.et Sart. subsp. sipylea P.H. Davis is a subspecies endemic to Turkey. The anatomical, morphological, ecological and chemical features of S. parnassica subsp. sipylea have been investigated. Plant samples were collected from different regions in Turkey. The morphological features of various organs of the plant such as leaf and flower are described in detail. In anatomical studies, transverse sections of the plant stem and leaf have been examined and supported by illustration and photographs. Ecological studies provide information about the physical and chemical structure of soil types in Spil Mountain and Marmara Island. The chemical composition of the essential oil of aerial parts of the plant was examined

    Influence of distance from the host on parasitisation by Psyttalia concolor (Szépligeti) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae)

    The olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae, is considered the main olive pest worldwide, and has been the target of biological control programmes through the release of the braconid parasitoid Psyttalia concolor. Laboratory tests were performed to evaluate the influence of distance from the host on parasitisation, placing larvae of the substitute host Ceratitis capitata at seven distances (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 mm) and four different time periods (7, 15, 30, 60 min). Moreover, field collected olives of Ogliarola Barese cultivar infested by B. oleae were exposed to P. concolor females to confirm its ability to parasitise B. oleae in small olives. Psyttalia concolor oviposition was inhibited at 2.5 and 3 mm due to the ovipositor length of the parasitoid females (2.7 mm). Hosts were easily parasitised at distances between 0 and 1.5 mm. The thin fruit pulp (up to 3.5 mm) of field collected olives allowed the parasitisation to occur also in mature fruits. At the best combination distance/time (0 mm, 30 min), tests performed with different larvae/parasitoid female ratio showed an increasing emergence of P. concolor (from 20% to 57%) with larvae/parasitoid ratio increasing from 0.11 to 0.74. The results of the present study might optimise the mass rearing of P. concolor, through a proper setting of its parameters, such as the host/parasitoid ratio, exposure distances, and interaction time

    Microdeletion del(22)(q12.2) encompassing the facial development-associated gene, MN1 (meningioma 1) in a child with Pierre-Robin sequence (including cleft palate) and neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2): a case report and review of the literature

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pierre-Robin sequence (PRS) is defined by micro- and/or retrognathia, glossoptosis and cleft soft palate, either caused by deformational defect or part of a malformation syndrome. Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) is an autosomal dominant syndrome caused by mutations in the <it>NF2 </it>gene on chromosome 22q12.2. NF2 is characterized by bilateral vestibular schwannomas, spinal cord schwannomas, meningiomas and ependymomas, and juvenile cataracts. To date, NF2 and PRS have not been described together in the same patient.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report a female with PRS (micrognathia, cleft palate), microcephaly, ocular hypertelorism, mental retardation and bilateral hearing loss, who at age 15 was also diagnosed with severe NF2 (bilateral cerebellopontine schwannomas and multiple extramedullary/intradural spine tumors). This is the first published report of an individual with both diagnosed PRS and NF2. High resolution karyotype revealed 46, XX, del(22)(q12.1q12.3), FISH confirmed a deletion encompassing <it>NF2</it>, and chromosomal microarray identified a 3,693 kb deletion encompassing multiple genes including <it>NF2 </it>and <it>MN1 </it>(meningioma 1).</p> <p>Five additional patients with craniofacial dysmorphism and deletion in chromosome 22-adjacent-to or containing <it>NF2 </it>were identified in PubMed and the DECIPHER clinical chromosomal database. Their shared chromosomal deletion encompassed <it>MN1</it>, <it>PITPNB </it>and <it>TTC28</it>. <it>MN1</it>, initially cloned from a patient with meningioma, is an oncogene in murine hematopoiesis and participates as a fusion gene (<it>TEL</it>/<it>MN1</it>) in human myeloid leukemias. Interestingly, <it>Mn1</it>-haploinsufficient mice have abnormal skull development and secondary cleft palate. Additionally, <it>Mn1 </it>regulates maturation and function of calvarial osteoblasts and is an upstream regulator of <it>Tbx22</it>, a gene associated with murine and human cleft palate. This suggests that deletion of <it>MN1 </it>in the six patients we describe may be causally linked to their cleft palates and/or craniofacial abnormalities.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Thus, our report describes a <it>NF2</it>-adjacent chromosome 22q12.2 deletion syndrome and is the first to report association of <it>MN1 </it>deletion with abnormal craniofacial development and/or cleft palate in humans.</p

    Residues of rotenone, azadirachtin, pyrethrins and copper used to control Bactrocera oleae

    International audienceAbstract Rotenone, azadirachtin, pyrethrins and copper decay curves were determined in olive and oil samples after that trials consisting in one, two, and three applications of each active ingredient were carried out twice in the years 2005 and 2006. Rotenone, azadiracthin and pyrethrins were extracted with acetonitrile and determined by liquid chromatography; copper was extracted in a HCl aqueous solution and determined by chemical stripping. Pyrethrins were always found in amounts below the limits accepted, whereas rotenone and copper residues always exceeded, after the preharvest interval, the maximum threshold allowed for olives. As regards the residues in the oil, rotenone was found in concentrations higher than those detected on the olives. Copper tended to accumulate in the olives according to the number of applications, whereas in the oil the residue always proved to be lower than the maximum limit accepted. The sensitivity of the method applied did not allow the detection of azadirachtin

    MFI Type Zeolite Aggregates with Nanosized Particles via a Combination of Spray Drying and Steam-Assisted Crystallization (SAC) Techniques

    Hydrothermal synthesis is the state-of-the-art technique for the preparation of zeolites and related porous solids. However, when it comes to the preparation of nanosized zeolites, this technique is limited by low yields, separation problems and high amounts of waste. In this work, we utilized the strengths of a combination of spray drying and steam-assisted crystallization (SAC), also known as dry gel conversion, to reduce these problems. At spray drying temperatures between 300 and 400 °C, it was possible to convert all the amorphous material via SAC into zeolite particles without extra addition of template. Kinetic studies of SAC revealed that about 4 to 8 days are needed to achieve the formation of a 100% crystalline product. The newly formed crystalline phase was crystallized on the surface of the nanosized zeolites and led to a slight increase in the primary particle size while the macroscopic morphology of the spray-dried aggregates was preserved. This work demonstrates that the combination of spray drying and SAC are useful tools in supplementing the hydrothermal synthesis of nanosized zeolites

    Quantitative Assessment of Whole-Body Tumor Burden in Adult Patients with Neurofibromatosis

    Patients with neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), NF2, and schwannomatosis are at risk for multiple nerve sheath tumors and premature mortality. Traditional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has limited ability to assess disease burden accurately. The aim of this study was to establish an international cohort of patients with quantified whole-body internal tumor burden and to correlate tumor burden with clinical features of disease.We determined the number, volume, and distribution of internal nerve sheath tumors in patients using whole-body MRI (WBMRI) and three-dimensional computerized volumetry. We quantified the distribution of tumor volume across body regions and used unsupervised cluster analysis to group patients based on tumor distribution. We correlated the presence and volume of internal tumors with disease-related and demographic factors.WBMRI identified 1286 tumors in 145/247 patients (59%). Schwannomatosis patients had the highest prevalence of tumors (P = 0.03), but NF1 patients had the highest median tumor volume (P = 0.02). Tumor volume was unevenly distributed across body regions with overrepresentation of the head/neck and pelvis. Risk factors for internal nerve sheath tumors included decreasing numbers of café-au-lait macules in NF1 patients (P = 0.003) and history of skeletal abnormalities in NF2 patients (P = 0.09). Risk factors for higher tumor volume included female gender (P = 0.05) and increasing subcutaneous neurofibromas (P = 0.03) in NF1 patients, absence of cutaneous schwannomas in NF2 patients (P = 0.06), and increasing age in schwannomatosis patients (p = 0.10).WBMRI provides a comprehensive phenotype of neurofibromatosis patients, identifies distinct anatomic subgroups, and provides the basis for investigating molecular biomarkers that correlate with unique disease manifestations
