Properties of Nested Sampling
Nested sampling is a simulation method for approximating marginal likelihoods
proposed by Skilling (2006). We establish that nested sampling has an
approximation error that vanishes at the standard Monte Carlo rate and that
this error is asymptotically Gaussian. We show that the asymptotic variance of
the nested sampling approximation typically grows linearly with the dimension
of the parameter. We discuss the applicability and efficiency of nested
sampling in realistic problems, and we compare it with two current methods for
computing marginal likelihood. We propose an extension that avoids resorting to
Markov chain Monte Carlo to obtain the simulated points.Comment: Revision submitted to Biometrik
LANDSAT-4/5 image data quality analysis
A LANDSAT Thematic Mapper (TM) quality evaluation study was conducted to identify geometric and radiometric sensor errors in the post-launch environment. The study began with the launch of LANDSAT-4. Several error conditions were found, including band-to-band misregistration and detector-to detector radiometric calibration errors. Similar analysis was made for the LANDSAT-5 Thematic Mapper and compared with results for LANDSAT-4. Remaining band-to-band misregistration was found to be within tolerances and detector-to-detector calibration errors were not severe. More coherent noise signals were observed in TM-5 than in TM-4, although the amplitude was generally less. The scan direction differences observed in TM-4 were still evident in TM-5. The largest effect was in Band 4 where nearly a one digital count difference was observed. Resolution estimation was carried out using roads in TM-5 for the primary focal plane bands rather than field edges as in TM-4. Estimates using roads gave better resolution. Thermal IR band calibration studies were conducted and new nonlinear calibration procedures were defined for TM-5. The overall conclusion is that there are no first order errors in TM-5 and any remaining problems are second or third order
A singular Sphere Covering Inequality: uniqueness and symmetry of solutions to singular Liouville-type equations
We derive a singular version of the Sphere Covering Inequality which was recently
introduced in Gui and Moradifam (Invent Math. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00222-018-
0820-2, 2018) suitable for treating singular Liouville-type problems with superharmonic
weights. As an application we deduce newuniqueness results for solutions of the
singular mean field equation both on spheres and on bounded domains, as well as new
self-contained proofs of previously known results, such as the uniqueness of spherical
convex polytopes first established in Luo and Tian (Proc Am Math Soc 116(4):1119–
1129, 1992). Furthermore, we derive new symmetry results for the spherical Onsager
vortex equation
Statistical mechanics of clonal expansion in lymphocyte networks modelled with slow and fast variables
We study the Langevin dynamics of the adaptive immune system, modelled by a
lymphocyte network in which the B cells are interacting with the T cells and
antigen. We assume that B clones and T clones are evolving in different thermal
noise environments and on different timescales. We derive stationary
distributions and use statistical mechanics to study clonal expansion of B
clones in this model when the B and T clone sizes are assumed to be the slow
and fast variables respectively and vice versa. We derive distributions of B
clone sizes and use general properties of ferromagnetic systems to predict
characteristics of these distributions, such as the average B cell
concentration, in some regimes where T cells can be modelled as binary
variables. This analysis is independent of network topologies and its results
are qualitatively consistent with experimental observations. In order to obtain
full distributions we assume that the network topologies are random and locally
equivalent to trees. The latter allows us to employ the Bethe-Peierls approach
and to develop a theoretical framework which can be used to predict the
distributions of B clone sizes. As an example we use this theory to compute
distributions for the models of immune system defined on random regular

Parallel processing in immune networks
In this work we adopt a statistical mechanics approach to investigate basic,
systemic features exhibited by adaptive immune systems. The lymphocyte network
made by B-cells and T-cells is modeled by a bipartite spin-glass, where,
following biological prescriptions, links connecting B-cells and T-cells are
sparse. Interestingly, the dilution performed on links is shown to make the
system able to orchestrate parallel strategies to fight several pathogens at
the same time; this multitasking capability constitutes a remarkable, key
property of immune systems as multiple antigens are always present within the
host. We also define the stochastic process ruling the temporal evolution of
lymphocyte activity, and show its relaxation toward an equilibrium measure
allowing statistical mechanics investigations. Analytical results are compared
with Monte Carlo simulations and signal-to-noise outcomes showing overall
excellent agreement. Finally, within our model, a rationale for the
experimentally well-evidenced correlation between lymphocytosis and
autoimmunity is achieved; this sheds further light on the systemic features

Climate-induced conservation risks of historic reinforced concrete buildings: Preliminary results from literature review
Environmental conditions can favour different kinds of deterioration in historic reinforced concrete structures. This preliminary results from literature review are focused on the climate-induced risks affecting reinforced concrete buildings with respect to mechanical, chemical, and biological deterioration. To this purpose, a three-step process defined by the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) flow diagram, was used leading to the inclusion of 45 documents identified via the search engines Scopus and Web of Science. The outcomes highlight that chemical and mechanical decays are the most investigated ones, being mainly triggered by salt weathering and freezing-thawing cycles. It was found that experimental and theoretical approaches are often coupled to estimate climate-induced deterioration mechanisms, also considering environmental parameters. Finally, the literature search provides some milestones which can be used to evaluate gaps and research needs in the field of climate-induced conservative risks affecting reinforced concrete structures
Single-row vs. double-row arthroscopic rotator cuff repair: clinical and 3 Tesla MR arthrography results.
Background
Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair has become popular in the last few years because it avoids large skin incisions and deltoid detachment and dysfunction. Earlier arthroscopic single-row (SR) repair methods achieved only partial restoration of the original footprint of the tendons of the rotator cuff, while double-row (DR) repair methods presented many biomechanical advantages and higher rates of tendon-to-bone healing. However, DR repair failed to demonstrate better clinical results than SR repair in clinical trials. MR imaging at 3 Tesla, especially with intra-articular contrast medium (MRA), showed a better diagnostic performance than 1.5 Tesla in the musculoskeletal setting. The objective of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the clinical and 3 Tesla MRA results in two groups of patients operated on for a medium-sized full-thickness rotator cuff tear with two different techniques.
Methods
The first group consisted of 20 patients operated on with the SR technique; the second group consisted of 20 patients operated on with the DR technique. All patients were evaluated at a minimum of 3 years after surgery. The primary end point was the re-tear rate at 3 Tesla MRA. The secondary end points were the Constant-Murley Scale (CMS), the Simple Shoulder Test (SST) scores, surgical time and implant expense.
Results
The mean follow-up was 40 months in the SR group and 38.9 months in the DR group. The mean postoperative CMS was 70 in the SR group and 68 in the DR group. The mean SST score was 9.4 in the SR group and 10.1 in the DR group. The re-tear rate was 60% in the SR group and 25% in the DR group. Leakage of the contrast medium was observed in all patients.
Conclusions
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on 3 Tesla MRA in the evaluation of two different techniques of rotator cuff repair. DR repair resulted in a statistically significant lower re-tear rate, with longer surgical time and higher implant expense, despite no difference in clinical outcomes. We think that leakage of the contrast medium is due to an incomplete tendon-to-bone sealing, which is not a re-tear. This phenomenon could have important medicolegal implications.

Cooperative and competitive behaviour among passengers during the Costa Concordia disaster
Despite the increase in regulation and codes, there is a relatively small body of scientific literature on maritime disasters management, especially in terms of human factors that affect the success of the evacuation and safety procedures. This paper provides an analysis of passengers’ behaviour during the Costa Concordia disaster of 2012, in which 32 people died. We use 49 passengers’ witness statement made available by the court of Grosseto to understand how the evacuation occurred. We examine whether the main factor in reducing the effectiveness of the evacuation procedure was the lack of effective management or the behaviours among evacuees, or a combination of the two.
Results of the analysis suggest that passengers reacted with solidarity, helped each other and that such spontaneous and pro-social behaviour possibly contributed to reduce the number of casualties. By contrast, competitive behaviours happened only in relation to specific environmental constraints and were limited to the proximity of safety boats.
The deficiencies in command in the Costa Concordia evacuation highlights the need to increase the skills of personnel called to manage an emergency at sea and the need to create ad hoc training programs that consider also unexpected scenarios.
Understanding how people (both staff and public) deal with an emergency and the factors that affect their decision is pivotal to help planners to review their strategy, anticipate similar events, and consider all the factors in future plans and regulations. While human error is always a big factor in maritime disaster, its impact can be considered and mitigated with specific procedures and adaptable plans
Mechanical properties of the most common european woods: A literature review
Wood is an orthotropic material used since ancient time. A literature research about the mechanical properties of density, fracture toughness, modulus of elasticity, and Poisson’s ratio has been done to have a broader view on the subject. The publications relating to the topic were found through the two search engines Scopus and Google Scholar that have yielded several papers, including articles and book sections. In general, there is no standardization on the method of analysis carried out on wood, underlining the great difficulty in studying this complex material. The parameter of density has a great variability and needs a deeper investigation; fracture toughness is not always available in literature, not even in the different directions of the wood sample. Interesting is the modulus of elasticity, which provides a correlation with density, especially in longitudinal section but, again, it needs to be studied in detail. The parameter of Poisson’s ratio is provided as single values in three different directions, but mainly for softwood. All the parameters require a more in-depth study for both softwood and hardwood. Furthermore, the type of analysis, whether experimental or modelling, needs to be standardized to have more comparable results
Prevalence of comorbidities according to predominant phenotype and severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
BACKGROUND: In addition to lung involvement, several other diseases and syndromes coexist in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Our purpose was to investigate the prevalence of idiopathic arterial hypertension (IAH), ischemic heart disease, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease (PVD), diabetes, osteoporosis, and anxious depressive syndrome in a clinical setting of COPD outpatients whose phenotypes (predominant airway disease and predominant emphysema) and severity (mild and severe diseases) were determined by clinical and functional parameters. METHODS: A total of 412 outpatients with COPD were assigned either a predominant airway disease or a predominant emphysema phenotype of mild or severe degree according to predictive models based on pulmonary functions (forced expiratory volume in 1 second/vital capacity; total lung capacity %; functional residual capacity %; and diffusing capacity of lung for carbon monoxide %) and sputum characteristics. Comorbidities were assessed by objective medical records. RESULTS: Eighty-four percent of patients suffered from at least one comorbidity and 75% from at least one cardiovascular comorbidity, with IAH and PVD being the most prevalent ones (62% and 28%, respectively). IAH prevailed significantly in predominant airway disease, osteoporosis prevailed significantly in predominant emphysema, and ischemic heart disease and PVD prevailed in mild COPD. All cardiovascular comorbidities prevailed significantly in predominant airway phenotype of COPD and mild COPD severity. CONCLUSION: Specific comorbidities prevail in different phenotypes of COPD; this fact may be relevant to identify patients at risk for specific, phenotype-related comorbidities. The highest prevalence of comorbidities in patients with mild disease indicates that these patients should be investigated for coexisting diseases or syndromes even in the less severe, pauci-symptomatic stages of COPD. The simple method employed to phenotype and score COPD allows these results to be translated easily into daily clinical practice
