    Analysis of foreign language teachers ´attitudes towards digital teaching in the European Union Countries

    In the present era, both learning and teaching, including foreign language learning (FLL) and teaching, are being radically influenced by a massive implementation of digital technologies. The purpose of this study is to analyze foreign language teachers’ attitudes towards the use of technologies in foreign language teaching across Europe and to identify clear implications for their efficient implementation. The methodology of this study includes a mixed-method research design (quantitative and qualitative) with a survey conducted with altogether 234 foreign language (FL) teachers from different universities across Europe. The results clearly show that FL teachers generally have a positive attitude towards the use of technologies in their classes and that they frequently use them in their teaching since they can make students more engaged in learning a foreign language. In fact, the FL teachers have always been at the forefront of innovative approaches to teaching and learning. In spite of this, they admit that they would welcome more professional support from the management of their home institutions and demand training in the use of new technologies. The results of the research also indicate that special attention should be paid to the lack of personal contact, students' reactions, and the expression of emotions, which is difficult and almost impossible to achieve through the use of digital media. These findings are unique since they aim specifically at current FL teachers´ attitudes and needs across Europe and can be utilized by stakeholders and FLL course designers.     There is a growing concern about the poor quality of the writing of children and teenagers because of the continuous and constant exposure to the new technologies. Increasingly parents complain that their children spend too much time with their phones, tablets, computers, video games, etc. There is also an increase in the number of teachers who complain about their students’ writing skills. Some of the most prominent criticisms are loss of vocabulary, simplified syntax and the poor spelling of the compositions. To verify if these criticisms are motivated or not by the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) is what moved us to initiate this doctoral dissertation entitled “The influence of ICT on ratings of syntactic maturity: a comparative study between pre- and post-internet generations”. We aim to know if a daily and constant exposure to the ICT can affect the syntactic maturity rates of children and teenagers. We also want to find out if there are differences between the levels of syntactic maturity of today’s students and those of the 1990s, when there were no ICT and internet. In order to do this, we have carried out a quantitative analysis taking as a reference previous studies by generativist researchers in the Anglo-Saxon and Hispanic world and we have used the same units of measure (T-unit and clause). We collected a corpus of 382 essays, half argumentative and half descriptive, from 191 individuals. We have analyzed them according to ten dependent variables or syntactic maturity rates and other independent variables (Hours in internet, Course, Sex, Location, Type of school) by applying techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics..

    A Systematic Review of the Cognitive Impact of Digital Media Modalities on Reading Comprehension in L2.

    The current affordances of ICT have – in the past decade – dramatically increased the exposure of students to the number of various digital texts they use or are exposed to when acquiring an additional language. The print media has been supplemented or even sometimes substituted by the digital media at all levels of education, including higher education and university curricula. Various research has recently been conducted into the role of digital media in L2 acquisition and this paper attempts to systematically summarize the results of this research, with a specific focus on reading comprehension. This systematic review follows the PRISMA guidelines (Page et al., 2021). The 2010-2021 studies from Scopus and the Web of Science dealing with the topic have been collected and analysed. Only experimental studies in peer-reviewed research journal papers have been included in the search. By applying this protocol review, 15 papers were selected for a synthesis. The results were classified as: (a) effect of media on reading comprehension, (b) pedagogical implications, (c) future research directions. The study concludes with some discussion and implications for researchers and practitioners from two perspectives: basic or fundamental Second Language Acquisition (FSLA) and instructed Second Language acquisition (ISLA)

    Search for flavor changing neutral currents in top quark decays in pp collisions at 7 TeV

    The results of a search for flavor changing neutral currents in top quark decays t → Zq in events with a topology compatible with the decay chain tt¯ → Wb + Zq → νb + q are presented. The search is performed with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The observed number of events agrees with the standard model prediction and no evidence for flavor changing neutral currents in top quark decays is found. A t → Zq branching fraction greater than 0.21% is excluded at the 95% confidence level.We congratulate our colleagues in the CERN accelerator departments for the excellent performance of the LHC machine.     Search for three-jet resonances in pp collisions at √ s=7TeV

    Results are reported from a search for the production of three-jet resonances in pp collisions at a center- of-mass energy √s = 7 TeV. The study uses the data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb?1. Events with high jet multiplicity and a large scalar sum of jet transverse momenta are analyzed for the presence of resonances in the three-jet invariant mass spectrum. No evidence for a narrow resonance is found in the data, and limits are set on the cross section for gluino pair production in an R-parity-violating supersymmetry model, for gluino masses greater than 280 GeV. Assuming a branching fraction for gluino decay into three jets of 100%, gluino masses below 460 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.     Forward-backward asymmetry of Drell-Yan lepton pairs in pp collisions at s=7TeV

    ABSTRACT: A measurement of the forward–backward asymmetry (AFB) of Drell–Yan lepton pairs in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV is presented. The data sample, collected with the CMS detector, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb−1. The asymmetry is measured as a function of dilepton mass and rapidity in the dielectron and dimuon channels. Combined results from the two channels are presented, and are compared with the standard model predictions. The AFB measurement in the dimuon channel and the combination of the two channels are the first such results obtained at a hadron collider.     A search for a doubly-charged Higgs boson in pp collisions at √ s =7 TeV

    A search for a doubly-charged Higgs boson in pp collisions at √ s = 7 TeV is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb−1, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is performed using events with three or more isolated charged leptons of any flavor, giving sensitivity to the decays of pair-produced triplet components Φ ++ Φ −−, and Φ ++ Φ − from associated production. No excess is observed compared to the background prediction, and upper limits at the 95 % confidence level are set on the Φ ++ production cross section, under specific assumptions on its branching fractions. Lower bounds on the Φ ++ mass are reported, providing significantly more stringent constraints than previously published limits.We congratulate our colleagues in the CERN accelerator departments for the excellent performance of the LHC machine.     Search for the standard model Higgs boson in the H → ZZ → l+l-ꚍ+ꚍ- decay channel in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    A search is reported for the standard model Higgs boson in the H → ZZ → l+l-ꚍ+ꚍ- decay mode, where l = µ or e, in proton-proton collisions at √s = 7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb-1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. No evidence is found for a signi_cant deviation from the background expectation. An upper limit four to twelve times larger than the predicted value is set at 95% con_dence level for the product of the standard model Higgs boson production cross section and decay branching fraction in the mass range 190 < mH < 600 GeV.We congratulate our colleagues in the CERN accelerator departments for the excellent performance of the LHC machine.
