    A projected decrease in lightning under climate change

    Lightning strongly influences atmospheric chemistry, and impacts the frequency of natural wildfires. Most previous studies project an increase in global lightning with climate change over the coming century but these typically use parameterizations of lightning that neglect cloud ice fluxes, a component generally considered to be fundamental to thunderstorm charging. As such, the response of lightning to climate change is uncertain. Here, we compare lightning projections for 2100 using two parameterizations: the widely used cloud-top height (CTH) approach, and a new upward cloud ice flux (IFLUX) approach that overcomes previous limitations. In contrast to the previously reported global increase in lightning based on CTH, we find a 15% decrease in total lightning flash rate with IFLUX in 2100 under a strong global warming scenario. Differences are largest in the tropics, where most lightning occurs, with implications for the estimation of future changes in tropospheric ozone and methane, as well as differences in their radiative forcings. These results suggest that lightning schemes more closely related to cloud ice and microphysical processes are needed to robustly estimate future changes in lightning and atmospheric composition

    Specification and Checking of Software Contracts for Conditional Information Flow ⋆

    Abstract. Information assurance applications built according to the MILS (Multiple Independent Levels of Security) architecture often contain information flow policies that are conditional in the sense that data is allowed to flow between system components only when the system satisfies certain state predicates. However, existing specification and verification environments, such as SPARK Ada, used to develop MILS applications can only capture unconditional information flows. Motivated by the need to better formally specify and certify MILS applications in industrial contexts, we present an enhancement of the SPARK information flow annotation language that enables specification, inferring, and compositional checking of conditional information flow contracts. We report on the use of this framework for a collection of SPARK examples.

    Polymorph Transformation in Paracetamol Monitored by In-line NIR Spectroscopy During a Cooling Crystallization Process

    The reliable in-line monitoring of pharmaceutical processes has been regarded as a key tool toward the full implementation of process analytical technology. In this study, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was examined for use as an in-line monitoring method of the paracetamol cooling crystallization process. The drug powder was dissolved in ethanol-based cosolvent at 60°C and was cooled by 1°C/min for crystallization. NIR spectra acquired by in-line measurement were interpreted by principal component analysis combined with off-line characterizations via X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The whole crystallization process appeared to take place in three steps. A metastable form II polymorph of paracetamol was formed and transformed into the stable form I polymorph on the way to the growth of pure form I by cooling crystallization. These observations are consistent with a previous focused beam reflectance method-based study (Barthe et al., Cryst Growth Des 8:3316–3322, 2008)

    International and European policy on work and retirement: Reinventing critical perspectives on active ageing and mature subjectivity

    In this article, the authors critically examine themes that have become associated with work and retirement in the context of demographic change. Two discourses are looked at in detail, those of ‘active’ and ‘productive’ ageing, with a focus upon International and European social policy. Drawing on the work of Foucault and others, the emergence of a dominant discourse and its effects on policy-based understandings of ageing are examined. A new orthodoxy of ageing subjectivity is identified, restricting the social contribution of older adults to work and work-like activities. A subtext refers to the co-option of liberal gerontological priorities into new and socially rigid forms of identity that legitimize particular ways of growing old. The authors conclude that a radical re-positioning, inspired by mature identity, is required to rely less upon economically determined roles and more upon alternative grounding in existential life tasks and experience to give space for a ‘mature subjectivity’ and a desirable ‘mature subject’

    Combined gene expression and proteomic analysis of EGF induced apoptosis in A431 cells suggests multiple pathways trigger apoptosis

    Published online: 28 July 2013A431 cells, derived from epidermoid carcinoma, overexpress the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and when treated with a high dose of EGF will undergo apoptosis. We exploited microarray and proteomics techniques and network prediction to study the regulatory mechanisms of EGF-induced apoptosis in A431 cells. We observed significant changes in gene expression in 162 genes, approximately evenly split between pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic genes and identified 30 proteins from the proteomic data that had either pro or anti-apoptotic annotation. Our correlation analysis of gene expression and proteome modeled a number of distinct sub-networks that are associated with the onset of apoptosis, allowing us to identify specific pathways and components. These include components of the interferon signalling pathway, and down stream components, including cytokines and suppressors of cytokine signalling. A central component of almost all gene expression sub-networks identified was TP53, which is mutated in A431 cells, and was down regulated. This down regulation of TP53 appeared to be correlated with proteomic sub-networks of cytoskeletal or cell adhesion components that might induce apoptosis by triggering cytochrome C release. Of the only three genes also differentially expressed as proteins, only serpinb1 had a known association with apoptosis. We confirmed that up regulation and cleavage of serpinb1 into L-DNAaseII was correlated with the induction of apoptosis. It is unlikely that a single pathway, but more likely a combination of pathways is needed to trigger EGF induced apoptosis in A431cells.Ibrahim Alanazi, Esmaeil Ebrahimie, Peter Hoffmann, David L.
