    Picophytoplankton predominance in hypersaline lakes (Transylvanian Basin, Romania)

    The occurrence and importance of photoautotrophic picoplankton (PPP, cells with a diameter <2μm) was studied a long a trophic and salinity gradient in hypersaline lakes of the Transylvanian Basin (Romania. The studied lakes were found to be rich in PPP, with abundances (maximum:7.6 x 106 cells mL - ) higher than in freshwater and marine environments of similar trophic conditions. The contribution of PPP to the total phytoplankton bio volume did not decrease with in creasing trophic state as it was generally found in other aquatic environments. Regardless of the trophic conditions, the contribution of PPP could reach 90-100% in these hypersaline lakes. We hypothesized that the PPP predominance might be the result of the low grazing pressure, since heterotrophic nanoflagellates (the main grazers of PPP) were absent in the studied samples. There were significant differences in community composition among the lakes a long the salinity gradient. CyPPP predominated in less saline waters (mainly below 5%), while EuPPP were present along the entire salinity range (up to 18.7%), dominating the phytoplankton between 3 and 13% salin ity . Above 13% salinity, the phytoplankton was composed mainly of Dunaliella species

    Deposition of Silicon Carbide and Nitride Based Coatings by Atmospheric Plasma Spraying

    In this work atmospheric plasma spraying of SiC and Si3N4 was investigated. Plasma spraying of these ceramics raises several problems since they would tend to decompose instead of melting at elevated temperatures during the process. To circumvent this problem the non-oxide ceramics were deposited as a composite powder mixed with non-oxide ceramic particles resulting in a ceramic/ceramic composite structure. Our findings were that using such a composite feedstock powder both oxidation and decomposition of the non-oxide particles could be avoided. A vitrified phase was also developed in the coating

    Aminated Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes as Carrier for Covalent Immobilization of Phenylalanine Ammonia-lyase

    A new and efficient immobilized form of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) was obtained by covalent linkage onto amino functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SwCNTNH2) as carrier. The catalytic properties of the resulted nanostructured biocatalyst (SwCNTNH2-PAL) were tested in the kinetic resolution of racemic 2-amino-3-(thiophen-2-yl)propanoic acid 1 by ammonia elimination and in the enantiotope selective addition of ammonia onto (E)-3-(thiophen-2-yl)acrylic acid 2. SwCNTNH2-PAL was a durable biocatalyst in batch mode for ammonia elimination from 1 (&gt;85% of original activity after 7 cycles) and in ammonia addition to 2 (&gt;70% of original activity after 3 cycles in 6 M NH3 , pH 10.0). The ammonia addition onto 2 was also studied in a continuous-flow microreactor packed with SwCNTNH2-PAL (2 M NH3, pH 10.0, 15&nbsp;bar) in the 30-80&nbsp;°C temperature range. No significant loss of PAL activity was observed over 72 h in the microreactor up to 60&nbsp;°C. Productivity of SwCNTNH2-PAL at 30 °C was significantly higher in the enantiotope selective ammonia addition performed in a packed-bed reactor operated in continuous-flow mode (rflow =2.41&nbsp;mmol min-1 g-1) than in the reaction performed in batch system (rbatch = 1.38&nbsp;mmol&nbsp;min-1 g-1)

    A fitoplankton molekuláris diverzitása az Erdélyi-medence sós tavaiban

    Az Erdélyi-medence sós tavaira jellemző a magas trofitás és az erős emberi zavarás. Ezekben a tavakban pikocianobaktériumok és pikoeukariota algák egyaránt előfordulnak jelentős részesedéssel az össz alga biomasszából magas trofitás mellett is. Mikroszkópos módszerek alkamazásával megállapításra került hogy a nanophytoplanktont a sós tavakban közönséges Dunaliella fajok dominálják. A fitoplankton mikrszokópos vizsgálatának újszerű eredményei indokoltá tették a fitoplanktont alkotó fajok azonosítását melynek legalkalmasabb módja a molekuláris biológiai módszerek alkalmazása. Vizsgálataink során PCR, denaturáló gradiens gél elektroforézis és szekvenciaelemzés alkalmazásával megállapítottuk, hogy a fitoplanktont eddig kontinentális vizekben nem ismer tengeri cianobakériumok és tengeri eukariota algák alkotják. A pikofitoplnaktont tengeri Synechococcus (Cyanobacteria) és tengeri illetve sós tavi Picochlorum (Chlorophyta) fajok alkotják. A tengeri pikofitoplankton mellett több tengeri nanoplanktonfaj (Guillardia sp., Isochrysis sp.) is azonosításra került. Ezekben a kontinentális sós tavakban azonosított tengeri algafajok jelenlétére magyarázat lehet a szél- és a vízimadarak általi terjesztés, esetleg a sórétegekből kioldodó algasejtek, azonban ennek a kiderítésére további vizsgalatok szükségesek

    The Results Of The Non-Financial Audit At 16 Elite Hungarian Sport Federations

    The purpose of our investigation was to analyze the current operational status of 16 elite sports federations (biking, boxing, fencing, gymnastic, judo, track and field, kayak-canoeing, modern pentathlon, rowing, shooting, skating, swimming, tennis, table tennis, volleyball and wrestling), which have been the recipients of extra funding by the Hungarian government. The Hungarian Olympic Committee (HOC) contracted our university to run the non-financial audit, including interviews with leaders of the federations and completing a questionnaire by experts of the associations. Firstly, we examined the associations’ organograms and discovered that 31.25% of the federations have not had any organogram and that only 18.75% had a current, topical and detailed one. Secondly, we investigated the written missions of the sport organizations and found that 31.25% don’t have any, while 43.75% of the federations had a current, topical and detailed mission. Thirdly, we explored the vision of the organizations and discovered that 56.25% of the federations have not had any, while only 12.5% had current, topical and detailed ones. Lastly, we investigated the marketing and promotion strategies and found that 43.75% of the organizations hadn’t any, while only 18.75% of the associations had a current, topical and detailed one.
