THE IMPACT OF STATE OWNED BANKS ON INTEREST RATES SPREAD

    Get PDF
This paper develops the hypothesis that the co-existence of state owned banks with privately owned banks together tends to raise interest rates spreads and profitability of privately owned banks. This hypothesis can help explain the relationship between the share of state owned banks on total banking assets and economic growth, as reported in the literature. Three empirical tests of the two parts of the main hypothesis are presented. Two of them rely on Brazilian monthly time series data and the other one uses a cross section regression with data for a sample of countries. One of them builds on an estimation of an expanded version of the composition of a rate of return of an asset under the market efficient hypothesis. Another one estimates a factor augmented vector autoregression (FAVAR) model. All of these tests give support to the hypotheses tested.

Essays on the role of management control systems in innovation

The aim of this dissertation is to holistically explore the role of management control systems (MCS) in innovation. Following an increasing interest of the academic literature in this matter, we conducted an intensive and in-depth single case study in Amorim Cork Composites, a Portuguese company that is widely known as innovative. Until now the literature has established links between the four levers of control and the various types of innovation. However, it has been neglected that these systems were envisioned to work together and that their use generates important dynamic tensions. Therefore, informed by Simons’ framework we explore how the case company mobilizes the packages of MCS regarding innovation and the dynamic tensions that arises from these uses. Indeed, it is perceived that interactive and beliefs systems can create the necessary conditions and that diagnostic and boundary systems allow for the appropriation of the benefits of these conditions. After achieving these results, we then link institutional theory to the dimensions of communication and guidance/focus that come from data analysis to develop a model on how and why MCS affect the individuals’ behaviours. Based on institutional theory we argue that as a set of institutionalized routines MCS can orient individuals for innovation through the dimensions mentioned. Through cognition and sensemaking MCS increase the proactive behaviour of individuals to engage innovation. With this, we are able to present three inter-related essays (one literature review and two empirical essays) that contribute to advancing the existing knowledge and furthering the current debate on this subject.O objetivo desta tese de doutoramento Ă© explorar, de forma holĂstica, o papel dos sistemas de controlo de gestĂŁo (SCG) na inovação.

Quantitative Risk Evaluation of Obstacle Limitation Surfaces for Final Approaches at Airports

    Get PDF
Obstacle limitation surfaces (OLS) are the main safeguard against objects that can pose a hazard to aircraft operations at and around airports. The standard dimensions of the most of those surfaces were estimated using the pilot’s experience at the time when they were included in the standard documents. As a result, some of these standards may have been overestimated, while others may not provide an adequate level of safety. With airports moving to the Safety Management System (SMS) approach to design and operations safety, proper evaluation of the level of safety provided by OLS at specific sites becomes important to airport operators. Therefore, this study attempts to collect actual flight path data using information provided by air traffic control radars and to construct a methodology to assess the probability of aircraft deviating from their approach path. This will be helpful to estimate safe and efficient standard dimensions of the OLS and assess the risk level of objects to the aircraft operations around airports. The methodology is presented using the aircraft trajectories of approaches at Ottawa International Airport (CYOW). Estimated dimensions of Code 3 approach surfaces also are presented
