    El presente trabajo contribuye al conocimiento del comportamiento de las descargas térmicas en aguas marinas costeras mediante la implementación y la aplicación de un modelo numérico que resuelve las ecuaciones de Navier-Stokes-Reynolds para aguas someras y la ecuación de la energía para la temperatura. El modelo numérico toma en cuenta el flujo de calor en la capa superficial, donde interactúan la superficie libre del mar y la atmósfera. Como caso de estudio, se analiza la dispersión de la pluma térmica de la Central Nucleoeléctrica Laguna Verde (CNLV), ubicada en el Estado de Veracruz, México. Las simulaciones numéricas se llevan a cabo teniendo en cuenta la información ambiental, que incluye información batimétrica, oceanográfica, meteorológica e hidrológica, y las condiciones de operación de la descarga de la CNLV. Con base en comparaciones con datos medidos en campo y en el criterio de eficiencia de Nash-Suffle para verificar la calidad de la solución numérica, se considera que los resultados obtenidos son bastante satisfactorios.This work contributes to the study of nuclear plant thermal discharges in coastal areas by using a numerical model which solves the Navier-Stokes-Reynolds equations for shallow waters and the energy equation for computing temperature variations. The numerical model takes into account the heat flux given in the upper layer, where the free surface and the atmosphere interact. In this study, the thermal plume dispersion from the nuclear power plant Laguna Verde, Veracruz, Mexico, is analyzed. Bathymetry, oceanographic, meteorological, hydrologic and plant operating data are used to run numerical simulations. The results are compared against observed data showing good agreement. The Nash-Suffles criterion is also applied to verify the quality of the numerical solution obtaining suitable results.Peer Reviewe

    Union after multiple anterior cervical fusion 21 cases followed for 1-6 years

    With a mean follow-up of 3 (1-6) years, we report on 21 patients who underwent multiple level cervical fusion, using autologous iliac crest grafts. Dissectomies were performed in 14 patients and corpectomies in another 7. Instrumentation was used in all patients with corpectomies and in 2 patients who underwent 2-level and 3-level dissectomies. Non-union occurred in 1 patient at 1 level. Graft displacement requiring reoperation was observed in 2 patients with massive corpectomies, in 1 of them as a consequence of trauma. In both patients complete bony fusion was obtained after reoperation and no other complications were observed. We conclude that the success rate with multiple-level fusion is comparable to that of single-level fusion when adequate fixation is achieve

    Invisible Belfast:Flat ontologies and remediation of the post-conflict city

    [in]visible Belfast was a research-driven indie alternate reality game (ARG) that ran for 6 weeks during the spring of 2011 in Belfast and was subsequently adapted, 5 years later into a fictional documentary for BBC Radio 4. The ARG is a participatory and dispersed narrative, which the audience play through. The text expands outward across both physical and digital platforms to create a mystery for the players using everyday platforms. The ARG is a product of media convergence and at its heart transmedial, defined by its complexity and modes of participation. The fictional radio documentary which remediated the ARG into a more simple linear structure, but possibly a more complex narrative form, retells parts of the story for new audiences. The premise of [in]visible belfast – the game and later the documentary – is itself an adaptation of writer Ciaran Carson’s novel The Star Factory (1997): a postmodern adventure through the complex psychogeography of Belfast. A trail through the labyrinthine text, which paints the history of Belfast in poetic prose. This article will map the concept’s journey from novel to game to radio, contextualising its development within its political and urban landscape and charting the remediation of the narratives as they fold out across multiple media and complex story arches. The article will draw together ideas from previous publications on ARG, transmediality and complex textualities from the authors and reflect on the textual trajectories that the remediation of the narrative has taken from the original book, through the ARG, into the radio documentary. Building upon recent approaches from environmental philosopher Tim Morton and games theorist Ian Bogost, the authors argue that Belfast’s history propels medial adaptations of a particular kind, characterised by a ‘flat’ ontology of space and time and a sort of diffuse and dark urban experience for designers/producers and players/listeners

    Eosinophilic Granuloma of the Spine With and Without Vertebra Plana: Long-term Follow-up of Six Cases (Cast Reports)

    Vertebral eosinophilic granuloma is a rare condition frequently associated with vertebra plana. In this paper we present six patients with eosinophilic granuloma of the spine; three were without vertebra plana, which represents a diagnostic problem. The mean follow-up was 9 years, (range 2 to 23) and the mean age was 10.8 years at diagnosis. All complained of pain with no neurological deficit. The lesions were located on the vertebral bodies of C4, T9, T10, L1, L2, and L5, respectively. Histologic confirmation of diagnosis was obtained in all patients, two by puncture and four by open biopsy. The patients with vertebra plana (T10, L1, and L5, respectively) were treated conservatively. Long-term follow-up demonstrated total healing of the vertebral body in two and partial rebuilding 8 years after diagnosis in one. Patients without vertebra plana (C4, T9, and L2, respectively) underwent curettage and bone grafting. In the patient with T9 location, a T8-10 anterior arthrodesis with autogenous rib graft was performed. The outcome was satisfactory in all

    The genus Urochloa P. Beauv. [syn. Brachiaria (Trin.) Griseb.] comprises species of great economic relevance as forages. The genomic constitution for the allotetraploid species Urochloa brizantha (cv. Marandu) and Urochloa decumbens (cv. Basilisk) and the diploid Urochloa ruziziensis was previously proposed as BBB1B1, B1B1B2B2 and B2B2, respectively. Evidence indicates U. ruziziensis as the ancestral donor of genome B2 in U. decumbens allotetraploidy, but the origin of the genomes B and B1 is still unknown. There are diploid genotypes of U. brizantha and U. decumbens that ay be potential ancestors of the tetraploids. The aim of this study was to determine the genomic constitution and relationships between genotypes of U. brizantha (2x and 4x), U. decumbens (2x and 4x) and U. ruziziensis (2x) via genomic in situ hybridization (GISH). Additionally, chromosome number and genome size were verified for the diploid genotypes. The diploids U. brizantha and U. decumbens presented 2n = 2x = 18 chromosomes and DNA content of 1.79 and 1.44 pg, respectively. The GISH analysis revealed high homology between the diploids U. brizantha and U. decumbens, which suggests relatively short divergence time. The GISH using genomic probes from the diploid accessions on the tetraploid accessions? chromosomes presented similar patterns, highlighting the genome B1 present in both of the tetraploids. Based on GISH results, the genomic constitution was proposed for the diploid genotypes of U. brizantha (B1B1) and U. decumbens (B1′B1′) and both were pointed as donors of genome B1 (or B1′), present in the allotetraploid genotypes

    Lumbosacral arthrodesis using pedicular screws and ringed rods

    Sixty-one patients who had lumbar instability and chronic low back pain or deformity from nontraumatic lumbar pathologies were studied. In all of them a posterior lumbosacral fusion with CUN (Clinic of the University of Navarre) pedicle rod fixation was used. The mean follow-up period was 36 months (range 26-46 months). The consolidation rate was evaluated according to plain and functional radiographs, and a clinical evaluation was made using an analogue pain scale. The rate of fusion was 93.5%. Neurological complications occurred in 3.3%. The incidence of screw failure was 2.3% of all the screws. No other implant failure occurred. The patients rated their clinical results as 'excellent' in 33.8% of the cases, 'good' in 42.2%, 'fair' in 16.9% and 'poor' in 6.7%. CUN instrumentation is a versatile internal fixation system that has been shown to provide satisfactory stability. Furthermore, the clinical results are comparable to those reported in studies in which the most common hardwares were used

    Calidad térmica a través de un gradiente altitudinal para una comunidad de lagartijas en la sierra del Ajusco y el Pedregal de San Ángel, México

    ResumenSe evaluó y comparó la calidad térmica del hábitat para una comunidad de lagartijas (9 especies) en un gradiente altitudinal (2 320-3 530 m) en la sierra del Ajusco y Pedregal de San Ángel para determinar si los ambientes térmicos diferentes pueden definir límites de distribución y termorregulación. Se seleccionaron 6 sitios diferentes en altitud y tipo de vegetación para monitorear la temperatura operativa ambiental. Se calculó la calidad térmica mediante la desviación de la temperatura operativa con respecto al intervalo de temperaturas seleccionadas por las lagartijas. Los resultados sugieren 3 tendencias: 1) la temperatura operativa y calidad térmica fueron más altas en los sitios más bajos (2 320 y 2 540 m) con matorral xerófilo; 2) los valores más bajos fueron registrados en los sitios con cobertura vegetal densa con bosque de pino (2 870 y 3 220 m); 3) las zonas abiertas (3 000 y 3 530 m) de pastizal alpino tuvieron valores medios de temperatura operativa y calidad. Estos resultados sugieren que la altitud y el tipo de vegetación tienen influencia en la calidad térmica y los trabajos sobre ecología térmica deben realizarse en varias escalas espaciales para entender los factores involucrados en el nicho térmico y en la termorregulación.AbstractWe evaluated and compared the thermal quality for a lizard community (9 species) in Sierra del Ajusco and Pedregal de San Ángel (central Mexico) along an altitudinal gradient (2 320-3 530 m) to determine whether different thermal environments may be influencing species distribution and thermoregulatory behavior. Six areas that differ in elevation and vegetation type are chosen to survey environmental operative temperatures. Habitat thermal quality is estimated from the mean deviation of operative temperatures from lizards’ selected thermal range. Results indicate 3 key findings: 1) operative temperature and thermal quality are higher at lower elevations (2 320 and 2 540 m), where xeric scrub vegetation was abundant; 2) thermal quality is lowest in closed-canopy pine forest (2 870 and 3 220 m); and 3) intermediate values of operative temperature and thermal quality are observed in open grassland habitat (3 000 and 3 530 m). These results support our hypothesis that elevation and vegetation type affect thermal quality and we conclude that thermal ecology studies should be conducted at multiple spatial scales to gain a better understanding of factors influencing the thermal niche and thermoregulatory profiles
