The Impact of Protest Responses in Choice Experiments

    Get PDF
Not much attention has been given to protest responses in choice experiments (CE). Using follow-up statements, we are able to identify protest responses and compute welfare estimates with and without the inclusion of such protest responses. We conclude that protest responses are fairly common in CE, and their analysis affects the statistical performance of the empirical models. In particular, when the sample is corrected by protests, our results come from utility consistent models. Thus, future choice experiments should consider the role of protest responses as contingent valuation studies have done.Protest Responses, Choice Experiments

Tesis Doctoral inédita leída en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Facultad de Ciencias, Departamento de Física teórica. Fecha de Lectura: 13-06-2022This document presents a measurement of the production cross section of a single top quark in association with a Z boson (and an additional quark), a rare standard model process which is also an irreducible background to many important searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The process is studied using events with three leptons (electrons or muons) in the nal state for an integrated luminosity of 35:9 fb1 recorded by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the LHC using proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. In these accelerator conditions, the reference next-to-leading-order (NLO) cross section for tZq ! Wb`+ q (considering only leptonic decays of the Z boson to electrons, muons or tau leptons) is 94:2+1:9 1:8 (scale) 2:5 (PDF) fb, which includes lepton pairs from o -shell Z bosons with invariant mass m`+ > 30 GeV. Previous analyses had been conducted at the LHC at 8 TeV but it was not until 2017, when the analysis described in this document was performed, that the rst evidence for this process was presented, also announced by the ATLAS collaboration in the same year. The evidence of this process along with a measurement of its cross section compatible with the prediction, represents an important test of the standard model. The nal state of the process is identical to avour-changing neutral current tZq production. Flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC) are a phenomenon which is highly suppressed in the standard model, predicted to occur at rates that are not accessible at the current accelerator conditions. In fact, analyses looking for FCNC tZq signatures are conducted in parallel to tZq standard model searches by the experimental community. The cross section measurement presented is sensitive to the contribution from FCNC tZq production, were there incompatibilities with the theoretical standard model prediction. For this analysis, a multivariate classi cation approach is used to achieve a powerful discrimination between signal-like events and other standard model processes (background). The cross section is extracted from a maximum likelihood t performed simultaneously on three statistically independent regions for the four different leptonic channels (three electrons, three muons, two electrons and one muon, and one electron and two muons). The rst region is de ned to be populated mostly by signal events while the other two control regions are de ned so that they contain mostly events from the main background processes. The measurement yields a cross section value (pp ! tZq ! Wb`+`q) = 123+33 31 (stat) +29 23 (syst) fb, calculated so that it contains the contribution from tau leptons too. The observed (expected) signi cance is reported to be 3.7 (3.1) standard deviation

MasterFinger: Multi-finger Haptic Interface for Collaborative Environments

    Get PDF
This paper introduces the Master Finger development and application, a multi-finger haptic interface for virtual object manipulation. This haptic device, with a modular interface, is specially designed to perform collaborative tasks. Each module is in charge of managing the haptic interaction with a finger. The mechanical structure of the module is based on a serial-parallel structure linked to the finger thimble by a gimble with its own controller. Cooperative applications based onMasterFinger-2 (MF2) are also described in this study. Results from these applications show that multifinger interface is a significant leap in haptic devices since precise object grasping and collaborative manipulation by using two hands are successfully performed

Chemical and Biological Characterization from Condalia microphylla Fruits, a Native Species of Patagonia Argentina

Condalia microphylla Cav. (Rhamnaceae), popularly known as “piquillin”, is widely distributed in Patagonia. The drupes are consumed as fresh fruits by Argentine communities. The aim of this work was to quantify the nutritional value of C. microphylla fruit and the phenolic compounds present and to determine the functional antioxidant properties in vitro and in vivo. The nutritional value was determined according to the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) methodology, and phenolic compounds were quantified by diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD). Antioxidant activity in vitro and in vivo was analyzed through the use of the radical species 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and zebrafish model, respectively. Quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (rutin) was the single principal phenolic compound. The extracts contained in vitro antioxidant activities and total phenolic contents (TPCs) between 1,143 ± 112 µg and 4,633 ± 174 µg gallic-acid equivalents (GAEs) per 100 g dry weight (DW), though no relationship was found between the latter parameter and the antioxidant activity of the extracts. When zebrafish larvae were exposed to oxidative stress (2.4% v/v H2O2), a concentration as low as 1.44 µg of GAEs/mL of piquillin-derived polyphenols inhibited lipid oxidation by up to 40%. Thus, in view of these advantageous functional food properties and the opportunity to exploit this Patagonian natural resource, piquillin consumption should be promoted worldwide.Fil: Boeri, Patricia. Fundacion Cancer. Centro de Investigaciones Oncologicas; Argentina. Cutaneous Melanoma: A Test Field for Immunotherapy and a Medical Challenge

    Get PDF
Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is the fourth tumor in frequency, and that whose incidence increases faster. In half of the cases, CM arises from pre-existing nevi. CM is a highly heterogeneous tumor, whose degree of differentiation varies among different hosts, and such heterogeneity is probably based on the accumulation of mutations that determine transitions from normal melanocytic stem cells mutated benign melanocytic stem cells malignant melanocytic stem cells clonogenic melanocytic cells. These populations may express different antigens and would therefore trigger the proliferation of different T and B cell clones. Early diagnosis is the clue for the cure of CM; when visceral metastatic disease is established, the prognosis is somber. This is especially so since CM is quite resistant to chemotherapy, and some of the reasons for such resistance will be discussed here. However, CM has proved to be sensitive to immunological effectors, although the mechanism of such sensitivity is still being investigated. These effectors range from therapeutic vaccines, in vitro expanded cytotoxic lymphocytes, cytokines, and monoclonal antibodies. Finally, we will discuss new therapeutic approaches that include the combination of immune modulators and vaccines which are being assayed in light of recent tumor immunology research.Fil: Aris, Mariana. Can Sadurní (Begues, Baix Llobregat), de la captación de recursos abióticos al inicio de la mineria de aluminio-fosfatos (10500-4000 Cal Ane) en el Macizo de Garraf

    Get PDF
