    Replica determinism and flexible scheduling in hard real-time dependable systems

    Fault-tolerant real-time systems are typically based on active replication where replicated entities are required to deliver their outputs in an identical order within a given time interval. Distributed scheduling of replicated tasks, however, violates this requirement if on-line scheduling, preemptive scheduling, or scheduling of dissimilar replicated task sets is employed. This problem of inconsistent task outputs has been solved previously by coordinating the decisions of the local schedulers such that replicated tasks are executed in an identical order. Global coordination results either in an extremely high communication effort to agree on each schedule decision or in an overly restrictive execution model where on-line scheduling, arbitrary preemptions, and nonidentically replicated task sets are not allowed. To overcome these restrictions, a new method, called timed messages, is introduced. Timed messages guarantee deterministic operation by presenting consistent message versions to the replicated tasks. This approach is based on simulated common knowledge and a sparse time base. Timed messages are very effective since they neither require communication between the local scheduler nor do they restrict usage of on-line flexible scheduling, preemptions and nonidentically replicated task sets

    NiCrAl alloys are improved by the addition of zirconium. These alloys are in the Beta or gamma/gamma' + Beta region of the ternary system. Zirconium is added in a very low amount between 0.06 and 0.20 weight percent. There is a narrow optimum zirconium level at the low value of 0.13 weight percent. Maximum resistance to cyclic oxidation is achieved when the zirconium addition is at the optimum value

    LANDSAT survey of near-shore ice conditions along the Arctic coast of Alaska

    The author has identified the following significant results. Winter and spring near-shore ice conditions were analyzed for the Beaufort Sea 1973-77, and the Chukchi Sea 1973-76. LANDSAT imagery was utilized to map major ice features related to regional ice morphology. Significant features from individual LANDSAT image maps were combined to yield regional maps of major ice ridge systems for each year of study and maps of flaw lead systems for representative seasons during each year. These regional maps were, in turn, used to prepare seasonal ice morphology maps. These maps showed, in terms of a zonal analysis, regions of statistically uniform ice behavior. The behavioral characteristics of each zone were described in terms of coastal processes and bathymetric configuration

    We derive a master equation for a driven double-dot damped by an unstructured phonon bath, and calculate the spectral density. We find that bath mediated photon absorption is important at relatively strong driving, and may even dominate the dynamics, inducing population inversion of the double dot system.     Analysis of Pt/SnO(sub x) during catalysis of CO oxidation

    Temperature-programmed reduction using 6kPaH2 suggests that a sample consisting of 3 percent Pt supported directly on SnO2 is, under conditions of catalysis of CO oxidation used here, best represented as 3 percent Pt/SnO sub x, since the support is likely to partially reduced, probably in the vicinity of the metal/oxide interface. Catalytic measurements at 421 to 424 K show that this 3 percent Pt/SnO sub x is significantly more active per unit area of Pt than 6 percent Pt/SiO2 in catalyzing the oxidation of CO. In situ micro-FTIR reveals that while the latter has predominantly linearly bound CO on the surface under reaction conditions, the Pt/SnO sub x also has a species absorbing at 2168 cm(exp -1) which may be CO upon Pt in a positive oxidation state or weakly chemisorbed CO on zero-valent Pt. This may be directly involved in the low temperature oxidation of CO on the Pt/SnO sub x, since being weakly held the activation energy for its surface diffusion to the metal/oxide interface will be low; such mobile species could allow the high rates of surface transport and an increase in the fraction of the surface over which the CO oxidation occurs. FTIR also reveals carbonate-type species on the P/SnO sub c surface

    Efficient quantum key distribution secure against no-signalling eavesdroppers

    By carrying out measurements on entangled states, two parties can generate a secret key which is secure not only against an eavesdropper bound by the laws of quantum mechanics, but also against a hypothetical "post-quantum" eavesdroppers limited by the no-signalling principle only. We introduce a family of quantum key distribution protocols of this type, which are more efficient than previous ones, both in terms of key rate and noise resistance. Interestingly, the best protocols involve large number of measurements. We show that in the absence of noise, these protocols can yield one secret bit per entanglement bit, implying that the key rates in the no-signalling post-quantum scenario are comparable to the key rates in usual quantum key distribution.Comment: 11 pages, 2 color figures. v2: minor modifications, added references, added note on the relation to quant-ph/060604

    The Vampire and the FOOL

    This paper presents new features recently implemented in the theorem prover Vampire, namely support for first-order logic with a first class boolean sort (FOOL) and polymorphic arrays. In addition to having a first class boolean sort, FOOL also contains if-then-else and let-in expressions. We argue that presented extensions facilitate reasoning-based program analysis, both by increasing the expressivity of first-order reasoners and by gains in efficiency

    Weathering the storm: A qualitative study of social prescribing in urban and rural Scotland during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Objectives The non-clinical approach known as social prescribing aims to tackle multi-morbidity, reduce GP workload and promote wellbeing by directing patients to community services. Usual in-person modes of delivery of social prescribing have been virtually impossible under social distancing rules. Our study qualitatively examined and compared the responses of three social prescribing schemes in Scotland to the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods We interviewed a theoretical sample of 23 stakeholders of urban and rural social prescribing schemes at the start of Covid-19 pandemic. Follow up interviews with a representative sample were conducted around ten months later. Interviewees included social prescribing coordinators (SPCs) GPs, managers, researchers and representatives of third sector organizations. Interview transcripts were analysed in stages and an inductive approach to coding was supported by NVivo. Results Findings revealed a complex social prescribing landscape in Scotland with schemes funded, structured and delivering services, in diverse ways. Across all schemes, working effectively during the pandemic and shifting to online delivery had been challenging and demanding, however their priorities in response to the pandemic had differed. With GP time and services stretched to limits, GP practice-attached ‘Link Workers’ had taken on counselling and advocacy roles, sometimes for serious mental health cases. Community-based SPCs had mostly assumed a health education role, and those on the Western Isles of Scotland a digital support role. In both rural or urban areas, combatting loneliness and isolation- especially given social distancing- remained a pivotal aspect of the SPC role. Conclusions Our study highlights significant challenges and shifts in focus in social prescribing in response to the pandemic. Use of multiple digital technologies has assumed a central role in social prescribing and this situation seems likely to remain. With statutory and non-statutory services stretched to their limits, there is a danger of SPCs assuming new tasks without adequate training or support
