Oxidation of Columbium-Chromium Alloys at Elevated Temperatures
Screening studies of the oxidation characteristics of binary alloys of columbium (Ref. 1) showed that chromium was an additive element worthy of intensive study. The screening studies showed that chromium additions were especially helpful in decreasing the oxidation rate of columbium at 10000deg C and were somewhat less beneficial at 12000deg C. It is the purpose of this investigation to study the oxidation characteristics of binary columbium-chromium alloys in more detail
Asymptotics of 4d spin foam models
We study the asymptotic properties of four-simplex amplitudes for various
four-dimensional spin foam models. We investigate the semi-classical limit of
the Ooguri, Euclidean and Lorentzian EPRL models using coherent states for the
boundary data. For some classes of geometrical boundary data, the asymptotic
formulae are given, in all three cases, by simple functions of the Regge action

Quantum information processing via a lossy bus
We describe a method to perform two qubit measurements and logic operations
on pairs of qubits which each interact with a harmonic oscillator degree of
freedom (the \emph{bus}), but do not directly interact with one another. Our
scheme uses only weak interactions between the qubit and the bus, homodyne
measurements, and single qubit operations. In contrast to earlier schemes, the
technique presented here is extremely robust to photon loss in the bus mode,
and can function with high fidelity even when the rate of photon loss is
comparable to the strength of the qubit-bus coupling.Comment: Added more discussion on effects of noise. Typos correcte
Observables in 3-dimensional quantum gravity and topological invariants
In this paper we report some results on the expectation values of a set of
observables introduced for 3-dimensional Riemannian quantum gravity with
positive cosmological constant, that is, observables in the Turaev-Viro model.
Instead of giving a formal description of the observables, we just formulate
the paper by examples. This means that we just show how an idea works with
particular cases and give a way to compute 'expectation values' in general by a

Individualisation of time-motion analysis : a method comparison and case report series

This study compared the intensity distribution of time-motion analysis data, when speed zones were categorized by different methods. 12 U18 players undertook a routine battery of laboratory- and field-based assessments to determine their running speed corresponding to the respiratory compensation threshold (RCT), maximal aerobic speed (MAS), maximal oxygen consumption (vVO 2max ) and maximal sprint speed (MSS). Players match-demands were tracked using 5 Hz GPS units in 22 fixtures (50 eligible match observations). The percentage of total distance covered running at high-speed (%HSR), very-high speed (%VHSR) and sprinting were determined using the following speed thresholds: 1) arbitrary; 2) individualised (IND) using RCT, vVO 2max and MSS; 3) individualised via MAS per se; 4) individualised via MSS per se; and 5) individualised using MAS and MSS as measures of locomotor capacities (LOCO). Using MSS in isolation resulted in 61 % and 39 % of player's % HSR and % VHSR, respectively, being incorrectly interpreted, when compared to the IND technique. Estimating the RCT from fractional values of MAS resulted in erroneous interpretations of % HSR in 50 % of cases. The present results suggest that practitioners and researchers should avoid using singular fitness characteristics to individualise the intensity distribution of time-motion analysis data. A combination of players' anaerobic threshold, MAS, and MSS characteristics are recommended to individualise player-tracking data
Lorentzian spin foam amplitudes: graphical calculus and asymptotics
The amplitude for the 4-simplex in a spin foam model for quantum gravity is
defined using a graphical calculus for the unitary representations of the
Lorentz group. The asymptotics of this amplitude are studied in the limit when
the representation parameters are large, for various cases of boundary data. It
is shown that for boundary data corresponding to a Lorentzian simplex, the
asymptotic formula has two terms, with phase plus or minus the Lorentzian
signature Regge action for the 4-simplex geometry, multiplied by an Immirzi
parameter. Other cases of boundary data are also considered, including a
surprising contribution from Euclidean signature metrics.Comment: 30 pages. v2: references now appear. v3: presentation greatly

Spin Foam Models of Yang-Mills Theory Coupled to Gravity
We construct a spin foam model of Yang-Mills theory coupled to gravity by
using a discretized path integral of the BF theory with polynomial interactions
and the Barret-Crane ansatz. In the Euclidian gravity case we obtain a vertex
amplitude which is determined by a vertex operator acting on a simple spin
network function. The Euclidian gravity results can be straightforwardly
extended to the Lorentzian case, so that we propose a Lorentzian spin foam
model of Yang-Mills theory coupled to gravity.Comment: 10 page
Continuum spin foam model for 3d gravity
An example illustrating a continuum spin foam framework is presented. This
covariant framework induces the kinematics of canonical loop quantization, and
its dynamics is generated by a {\em renormalized} sum over colored polyhedra.
Physically the example corresponds to 3d gravity with cosmological constant.
Starting from a kinematical structure that accommodates local degrees of
freedom and does not involve the choice of any background structure (e. g.
triangulation), the dynamics reduces the field theory to have only global
degrees of freedom. The result is {\em projectively} equivalent to the
